From what I've seen (which is a decent amount), Toews has played really really well in this tournament.

he's been awesome. i think he had the best +/- in the tournament going into today's games

these goalies are leaking like crazy. somebody might get to 10.

who is the number 2 goalie for russia? nabi has been terrible

Bryzgalov.

oh yeah. i would have strongly considered putting him in after the 3rd goal

Canada is not really playing really better than they did against the US...Russia just doesn't have a goalie that stops everything. Miller was barraged with shots and not just shots, good shots on nice feeds and nice setups.

And with that said 4-1. Time for Nabi to go drown his sorrows with vodka.

that's the only bad goal he's given up. russia's blue line was suspect coming into the olympics and they've been atrocious this period. 20+ shots and a ton of great chances. they're out of position and nobody is clearing the front of the net.

Wow this goalie is hanging on by a thread, don't even wait until the start of the 2nd to put him in, they could score 2 more goals on him by the time the last 30 seconds pass.

the second one was pretty soft.

i only saw the 3rd goal once (and you cant really blame a goalie on a breakaway goal), but he was flopping around on that one too.

Shouldn't you expect your supposedly world class goaltender to do more than not give up bad goals?

My point was that Canada didn't play poorly against the US. They were on the attack most of the game. I guess you could say that they must be playing better because everyone considered Russia a better team than the US going into this tournament and they are getting manhandled by them while the US won.

yeah, this is an elimination game and you have a really good goalie ready to step in. there's no way nabi should have been given a 4 goal leash.

the 4th goal was enormous, and it should have never happened.

well they def didnt play poorly against USA (they outplayed us pretty badly), but they didn't look like this. they look way more crisp and are flying all over the place.

I will agree with this statement and would add that my original point of him not being worth as much as Toews stands.

on a completely different subject...is there anywhere that I can actually watch the Russia/Canada game without paying more than a few dollars

Before this season, I would have 100% agreed with you. But Kane has taken such a huge step forward in his all-around game this year, that I think it's a toss-up between him and Toews.

I'm watching on Chinese spyware p2p video, so I haven't tried this link, but it may work: http://atdhe.net/

3-0 Canada now. Not messing around.

I ended up paying 4 bucks and by the time I got it going the score was 3-0. The 4 bucks cover both of the later games though so it will probably be worth it.

thanks for the link though

well the u.s. - hell, even the swiss defense - did a better job than russia's D in the first period. the play on the third goal was just terrible, malkin tried to beat two defenders himself and ended up giving up a rush the other way. you're basically playing an all-star team; you can't keep turning the puck over and giving odd-man rushes, and you have to actually hit someone and clear them out from in front of the net. the americans gave up lots of shots, but not a huge number of odd-man rushes and they were better about clearing out the screens. russia is just playing soft and dumb.

AO - homework assignment. Watch Game 6 of the Western Conference semifinals against Vancouver. Then come back and apologize to us for subjecting us to that ridiculous opinion.

The "X can't play physical" is hockey's version of "Yeah, he's got 50 homers and a .450 OBP, but you can't count on him in key situations" argument.

And while the Blackhawks as a team were completely dominated by Detroit, Kane (who can't play with desperation in key situations) tied up game 5 with a late third-period goal. That's kind of clutch.

seen it, explained it. i even said he can pick up points but he won't dominate a game that is physical. he played a bad series against detroit after a good one against vancouver. he's played a very bad tournament so far. he's played poor when i've seen him in physical games. he has moments when he plays well, they're just inconsistent. most of it is inexperience, and it will come. you'll see flashes of it at times, but he has more talent than what he shows in most crucial games. i'll take the player that already has it at a young age (toews; the strip on malkin tonight is an example of something that i've seen him do repeatedly and not something i've seen kane do with any regularity).

he's not in a bad group either, and it doesn't really take away from his game or potential. kovalchuk had the same problems his first time in the playoffs when avery completely picked him apart. semin strikes me as that kind of guy. i worry about kopitar being that guy. even ovechkin was a slow learner his first few games in the playoffs (and he's not doing a damn thing tonight against canada AND he plays a physical game). these playoffs will be a huge test for kane, as well as the next game (if he still has a significant role in the top 6).

and kane isn't close to the equivalent of a 450 obp guy with 50 homers. thornton is, and he disappears every single time he touches a big game.
