HOUSTON -- The Cubs' medical staff is keeping a close eye this week on pitcher Carlos Zambrano, who has had stiffness in the right shoulder/neck area since his start Saturday against the Pirates.

It's not considered serious and didn't appear to have a significant effect in his no-decision Saturday. Zambrano (6-1), who has minor discomfort when he turns his head to the left, threw a full bullpen session Tuesday and remains on track to make his next scheduled start Friday in Pittsburgh.

Zambrano threw for the trainer Tuesday, but the problem apparently arose from the way Zambrano slept.

I'm surprised that no one is freaking out about soreness in the pitching shoulder no matter what the excuse is.

If it was pure shoulder soreness, it would be a concern. However, since it's more related to his neck, it doesn't worry me as far as potential shoulder injury. Obviously you can and should be concerned with most injuries, but this one just doesn't worry me.

Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano said Wednesday he's healthy and strong -- then flexed and smacked his, uh, forearm as proof.

Oh Z...
