I'm just trying to find some sort of gauge as to how much more intangibles a player must have in order to cancel out a deficiency in stats. Posts above were deciding based on age, which is not the discussion I had in mind (yes, kinda shortsighted of me in my original post). I, myself, would also choose the guy with the better stats. However, a friend of mine last night convinced me that, given a deficiency in stats small enough that can be explained away by "randomness", then you should go with the player with the intangibles. I just wanted to find out what everybody else thought.

If the difference is small enough to explained by "randomness", then the question is pretty much "If you have two identical players, do you want the one with more intangibles?" If that is the case, then I would say sure, why not.

What would the roles on the team be?

Lets say that Hendry is trading to upgrade the bench at the trading deadline vs. trading to upgrade SS at the deadline.

To upgrade the bench I would have to still ask lots more questions, but still saying all things more or less equal stats wise, then look at track record. Which player has shown that they can come off the bench and pinch hit successfully. Which success in your book and mine not be the same in this role. If this is what you mean by an intangable, along with a peer that can sit on the bench and say try this its worked for me which is what you implied in the first post then it might, might, might be the intangable player to fit that role. There are just so many factors that come into play here that were not discussed in the first post that it is hard to answer the first question well. Along with the group attack that goes on when someone dosent worship completely at the sabermetric altar that shuts down discussion here. :flame:

To upgrade SS it is very easy to say the younger player. By taking the younger player not only have you upgraded SS now but the opportunity is there for that player to get better or have their best years with you.

Hope this is what you had in mind when you asked the question.
