This is a random question, but what goes into determining whether or not a player is even eligible for the 25-man playoff roster?

Specifically, I wondering about Seth Smith of the Rockies. I believe he was called up 9/16.

I've got a question:

What if one of the players, not on the roster, wants to attend the game. Can they be in the dugout or do they have to sit out in the stands?

They can sit in the dugout. Mark Prior did a couple times this year.

Is it that you have to be on the 40 man roster by Sept. 1st?

No.

Basically, a player is eligible on the 25-man playoff roster if he is in the team's system (majors, minors, DL) on August 31st/Sept. 1st at midnight.

Those eligible for the 25-man playoff roster are anyone on the 25-man roster at the August 31st deadline plus anyone on the DL or bereavement list. Those who are still on the DL can be replaced come playoff time by anyone who was in the system on August 31st (whether they are on the 40-man roster on August 31st or not).

That's cool. I wonder how many actually do, though. It would seem Marquis might have a chip since he wasn't on the Cardinals 25 man last October.
