Cedeno scored the winning run

By Andrea Breen / Iowa Cubs

Matt Murton's ninth inning double drove in the game winning run as the Iowa Cubs defeated the Round Rock Express, 4-3, Wednesday night at Principal Park.

With two outs in the ninth inning, Ronny Cedeno singled to left field, before Murton's double scored Cedeno, who scored the game winning run with a head first dive across the plate.

Round Rock took an early 2-0 lead, but Tony Richie's sacrifice fly in the second inning drove in Murton, who was 2-for-4, to bring the Cubs within one.

Philip Barzilla's infield single added another run for the Express in the fourth inning, making the score 3-1, but Iowa tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth inning on a Scott Moore double and on a run scoring error by Round Rock.

Iowa starter Kevin Hart held the Express to three runs over eight innings, striking out five. Felix Pie added two hits in the win.

After being activated from the disabled list earlier in the day, John Webb (3-6) picked up the win for Iowa with a scoreless inning of relief. Barzilla (7-6) was tagged with the loss for Round Rock.

SmokiesBaseball.com"]Miller leads Huntsville to win over Smokies, 5-1

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.- Huntsville's Adam Heether and Steve Moss smacked home runs for the home team, and Stars' pitcher Derek Miller (1-0) threw seven strong innings to lead Huntsville to a 5-1 win over Tennessee Wednesday night at Joe Davis Stadium. The win was the Stars ninth straight, and fifth in six games over Tennessee. Miller allowed only three hits and one run, while fanning seven in the start.

The Smokies Matt Craig (3-for-4) started the second inning with a home run, his ninth of the season, to even the score at one.

Heether took Smokies' starter Paul Schappert (3-6) deep in the third inning, giving the Stars a 3-1 advantage. The Stars' second home run shot of the night, this one by Moss in the sixth, made it a 5-1 Stars lead.

The Smokies will play Game Three of the series with Huntsville Thursday night, as Tennessee's Donnie Veal (5-7) will go up against the Huntsville's Lindsey Guilen (8-3). Tennessee will be back at Smokies Park for a five-game series with the Carolina Mudcats starting on July 23. DaytonaCubs.com"]Series Finale Goes to Sarasota

Daytona Falls in Pitchers' Duel, 3-1

[DAYTONA BEACH, FL] The Sarasota Reds have had the Daytona Cubs' number. In their eight meetings, Sarasota took seven of them as the Reds outdueled their opposition, 3-1, Wednesday night at "The Jack."

Jesse Estrada pitched well. He lasted eight innings, allowed three earned runs on five hits, walked two and struck out five. Unfortunately for Estrada, he took his third loss as Daytona's bats never supplemented his effort.

The Cubs managed only one run on nine base hits as they left eight men on base. Their solitary run came in the third inning as Brian Dopirak ripped a two out single. Steve Clevenger followed with a single of his own and Ryan Harvey drove in his high school teammate Dopirak with a single to make the score, 1-0 Daytona.

Sarasota would answer back in the top of the sixth as they plated two runs on three base hits to see-saw the lead in their favor, 2-1.

The Reds would add one more in the top of the seventh on a towering solo home run off the bat of their left fielder Danny Dorn.

Daytona will try and figure things out on the road as they travel to Brevard County to face off against the first-place Manatees tomorrow night at 7pm. Catch all the action on WELE 1380 as the Tyler Properties Pre-Game Show will start promptly at 6:40pm. The Cubs will continue their series against the Manatees at home on Friday and Saturday nights, respectively. For ticket information, contact the Cubs' front office at (386) 257-3172.

PeoriaChiefs.com"]Chiefs Win 3rd Straight 8-3

South Bend, IN – The Peoria Chiefs scored eight times in the first three innings and knocked off the South Bend Silver Hawks 8-3 Wednesday night in a game that was called due to rain in the bottom of the 7th. Peoria has won three straight and is tied for first with Burlington at 15-10 on the half.

Newcomer Leon Johnson wasted little time in getting on the good side of his Chiefs teammate. Promoted from Mesa on Tuesday, Johnson stepped in as the leadoff hitter on Wednesday and homered into the rightfield berm on the third pitch he saw. The homer was the first for a Chiefs leadoff batter in 2007 and gave them a first inning lead for the third straight road game.

Jim Adduci led off the Chiefs second with a double to rightcenter off Hawks starter Jordan Norberto. After moving to third on an error by rightfielder Gerrado Parra, Adduci scored on a line drive double off the bat of Russ Canzler. Canzler was sacrificed to third, but left there as Norberto got out of trouble.

Johnson started a big third inning rally that allowed the Chiefs to break the game open when he singled to right. After a flyout, Josh Lansford singled to right and Johnson moved to third where he scored on a passed ball. Lansford stole third and scored on a single by Derek Schermerhorn for a 4-0 Chiefs lead. Adduci followed with a single and Canzler doubled home a pair for a 6-0 lead. Wellington Castillo capped the six-run frame with a mammoth two-run homer over the berm and billboards in left for an 8-0 Chiefs lead.

South Bend finally got on the board against Chiefs starter Marco Carrillo in the sixth inning. Carrillo walked Jose Side to start the inning and Parra reached on an error by Canzler at first base. After a popup, Danny Perales tripled both runners home to get South Bend on the board at 8-2. Steve Mena followed with a RBI single to cut the lead to 8-3 before Carrillo induced an inning ending double play off the bat of Yunesky Sanchez.

Carrillo went six innings and allowed two earned runs on six hits and one walk. He struck out four and allowed just one runner past first base in the first five frames. Lefty Jeremy Papelbon didn’t allow a base runner while retiring two batters before the rain delay.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Game: Leon Johnson (CF) - Johnson started the game with a homer, singled and scored in the third and reached on a fielders’ choice in the sixth. He showed power in the first and speed in the third when he went first to third on a shallow single and scored on a passed ball.

Notes...Blake Lalli and his seven game hit streak got a day off…Jim Adduci now has a 6-game hit streak…Peoria has scored more runs in the first inning this season than any other frame…The Chiefs have scored in the first inning in three straight road games…The five homers hit this series are a season high for the Chiefs in any series this season as they had hit four in a series twice (vs. Beloit June 2-5 and at Clinton June 7-10)…The four game series continues Thursday afternoon at 4:30 EST when the Chiefs send RH Robert Hernandez (3-5, 4.83) against Silver Hawks RH Derik Nippert (4-1, 2.38)…The game can be heard live beginning with the pre-game show at 3:15 PM Central time online at http://www.peoriachiefs.com or on WOAM 1350.
