The real problem is that the NL Central is so bad that the Cubs think they're still in contention.

This is correct. This season is likely to be another where the Cubs should look to the future and don't.

I can't wait till we trade Gallagher for a middle reliever in July.

the Cubs would be in last place in the NL West and in second to last in the AL East, AL Central, AL West and NL East

In the AL the Cubs would have several fewer wins due to the superior competition. They'd already be planning the firesale.

what do you think the chances are of the cubs cleaning house after everything changes at the end of the season assuming

A. they keep this pace of dismal baseball

B. they actually play somewhat decent and either make the playoffs or just barely miss it

i know someone said somewhere on this board that the fans would be up in arms if there was a firesale...but...man...it really is looking like it is time

this team reminds me of the redskins from a few years back, and i actually thought that during the offseason, i just pushed it out of my mind because i am always so stupidly optimistic about the cubs...

i think i really do need to cry over this team

what a sad state of affairs

This year's Cubs are the last vestiges of an outgoing regime that has been slighted by its own inadequacies at every turn and a warped perspective of what leads to success.

Hendry and the Trib will pull out all the stops, as if they haven't already, making a huge push for the present, mortgaging the future and any hope it may hold. Next year will be even worse.

I asked ltb the other day who we'd sign next year, but I only gave him two options: Andruw Jones and Torii Hunter. Do you really think Jim can resist giving six years 100 million to a non-white aging OF with declining skills, but a huge name? Neither do I.

Also, keep your ears up for our first midseason trade of a promising pitcher for some OBP light utility IF or "power" trash OF as well as another prospect for a middle of the road reliever.

Let me try and guess it right now:

A) Donald Veal for David Weathers

B) Mike Fontenot and Sean Gallagher for Chad Bradford

That's my best guess.

A lot of players cut their teeth in the big leagues in a platoon situation, much less second tier prospects like Murton. He's gotten over 100 AB's and we're into June. The "platoon is screwing up Murton" excuse is stale and wearing thin and seems to be more of a pet peeve to some than anything that holds any real substance.

I don't see how anyone could claim we're burying the young guys. We currently have Marmol, Guzman and Marshall all brought up and contributing. Theriot has gotten a lot more extensive playing time then I foresaw in March. The only young guy that maybe should be playing is Pie, and I'd rather take the cautionary route with him since he appears to be the only positional organizational prospect the Cubs have developed worth a darn in the last two decades. The comparisons to the mid 90's Yankees are silly. If we had Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams, Mariano Rivera and Jorge Posada in the high minors I have no doubt they would be playing. Unfortunately, we got Ronny Cedano, Matt Murton, Rocky Cherry, Neal Cotts and Micah Hoffpauir.
