There are other catchers having better years who deserve to be there in Lo Duca's place, but the fans voted him in. He isn't as bad as you say though. I mean, at least he has a respectable avg and OBP for his posistion. He's not deserving of an all-star spot, but I've seen worse. Nevertheless, if it's based on who deserves it, McCann is starting and Ross is backup.

 

He is as bad as I say. There are ten NL catchers putting up better offensive numbers by VORP. He is woefully below average defensively this year. Lo Duca is a very poor choice.

 

As for his OBP, he's 11th among NL catchers with at least 100 plate appearances.

Ross doesn't deserve it. I'm a big fan of the guy, but he has 110 ABs at the halfway point. Even if he gets 57 ABs a month (like he did in June), he'll still finish w/ around 300 ABs. That's just not enough for All-Star consideration. It's his manager's fault, but I don't think he's really in the running.

 

I also don't think you take Barrett out of consideration b/c he punched AJP in the face. In fact, I'm betting that any player that thought McCann & Barrett were a toss up picked Barrett specifically because of the punch.

 

McCann is deserving, Lo Duca is not. But my point isn't that Barrett should be there over McCann. I'm just disputing the claim (from the first page) that no Cub deserves to be there. Barrett certainly does.
