Weber Added to Chiefs Staff

Right-hander spent most of 2005 with Peoria

PEORIA, IL—The Peoria Chiefs in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs have announced that they have added right-handed pitcher Matt Weber, who makes his way from Daytona. Weber is expected to start at Burlington Sunday in the series finale at 2:00 PM.

Weber, an Illinois native out of Rockford Boylan High School, was selected by the Cubs in the 16th round in the 2003 draft. He made his professional debut in 2003 where he spent all year with Mesa. In 2004 with Boise, the 21 year-old went 5-1 with a 2.95 ERA in 14 starts with the Hawks.

The 6’3, 205 pounder spent almost the whole year in 2005 with the Chiefs. Here in Peoria, Weber appeared in 25 games with 24 starts and was 7-9 with a 3.91 ERA en route to being named a first-half MWL All-Star before finishing up the season in Daytona.

In 2006, Weber is 2-4 with a 6.67 ERA with Daytona. He’s made 17 appearances, six as a starter and 11 out of the bullpen while recording a save. In 55 1/3 innings pitched, the former all-state football and baseball player struck out 26 and walked 19. With the addition of Weber, the Chiefs roster now stands at 24 players.

The Chiefs will return home on Monday for a four-game series against Clinton. Wade Miller is scheduled to make his third start for the Chiefs that night. So far with Peoria this season, the Cubs rehabbing right-hander has not recorded a decision and has a 1.29 ERA in seven innings of work. In those seven innings, he has allowed five hits and has punched out five. Monday night will also be the first of back-to-back fireworks nights at O’Brien Field with the game slated to start at 6:30 PM.

The Chiefs will host the LumberKings again on July 4th and after a 5:30 game, fans will be invited to toss a tennis ball for just the price of $1 for a chance to win various prizes and gift certificates donated by participating businesses around the Peoria area. All proceeds from the game will go to the Boys and Girls Club of America. Fans are then welcome to stick around and have the best seat in Peoria while they watch the best fireworks show around, displayed over the riverfront.
