Joe Borowski - R - Devil Rays

Devil Rays designated RHP Joe Borowski for assignment.

The move makes room on the 40-man roster for Travis Lee. This gives the Rays a chance to keep looking for a trade. If Borowski is sent through waivers, a team could claim him, figuring that he'd be cheaper in arbitration than through free agency. Dec. 20 - 6:39 pm et

I think the Rotoworld blurb specifically says that he was designated for assignment, not non-tendered. There's a difference.

Borowski will come off their 40-man roster immediately, and the Devil Rays will have ten days to trade him or try and pass him through irrevocable waivers with either the purpose of giving him his unconditional release or of assigning him to the minor leagues. Borowski has the option to refuse the assignment and elect to become a free agent.

What's Travis Lee's deal? If he's signed for another year, that makes Huff even more expendable.

Koronka and Novoa/Welly for Huff

That would be 7.5m off the books for Tampa, and two desperately needed arms.

Devil Rays non-tendered RHP Joe Borowski.

The Rays couldn't trade him and they weren't willing to pay him $3 million or so. The Marlins or Reds might sign Borwoski as a closer candidate.
