  1. And that's why the Cubs are going to move him to LF. Those lovable losers are back at their little adorable games yet once again.
  2. The word that I've heard is that Toronto is going to up their payroll in 2007. $100 million is the current rumour. And don't get me wrong, I love Wells... but he's not worth Barrett. Especially considering the fact we could probably get him for Izturis, Pie, and a live arm. Why give up one of the top players at his position for Wells when you can divest yourself of Izturis for the mere cost of an exceptionally talented, but far from sure thing prospect? I don't see Toronto wanting Izturis back. I think it would take 2 very good pitching prospects and Pie.
  3. That replacements name is either going to be Zisk or Von. What really surprised me is that I always thought of Gary Mathews as a good guy to teach hitters to increase their IsoD. I have to wonder if Baker had too much of an influance on him and pushed him into the swing away method. What were Clines numbers IsoD wise? Wasn't he a swing away guy?
  4. I couldn't say if he's going to be better but I certainly would like to see him have a better career! Oh yeah, and to have that career be with the Cubs.
  5. I just hope I can tell the two teams apart on the field. Damn uniforms ;) Are yours as funky as ours? I do hope they get together and decide on what to wear so they aren't so close. The Georgia T vs ND games uni's were a little too close for me.
  6. I suppose I should be skepitcal of a lot of hitters until they start testing for HGH. It's a good point to see if Soriano is worth the dollars the Cubs or any team may pay him. If hendry re-signs Ramirez and Pierre I think a player like Soriano may be a neccessity. Durham wouldn't be a bad choice either and he would leave more money to spend on pitching.
  7. The word that I've heard is that Toronto is going to up their payroll in 2007.
  8. I think he is a decent backup and if he could get his IsoP to a 260/330 I'd be happy with him as a starter if the Cubs had enough firepower for the rest of the lineup. I still want to see the young catchers get some time in though, especially if the Cubs are not going to keep Blanco around.
  9. I agree with most of the posters that Soriano at 2B would be great, but not to replace Murton. Actually, I can't see Hendry outbidding everybody for Soriano. I think the Tribune's free agent money should go to ARam, a starting pitcher (Schmidt), and some cheaper free agents (Durham and Craig Wilson). The impact bat (Tejada, Andruw Jones, etc.) can come in a trade using Cedeno and a couple of young pitchers as bait. Good points and Hendry does have very good options out there and it's time for him to sieze them now. Is Freel a free agent? I just don't see the Reds dealing him in he still has options.
  10. The middle is the weak link on this team IMO, starting 8 wise. I like Barrett the best of the bunch and the Cubs really really need his bat because of poorly the whole team hits. Assuming....a big asumption that Ramirez does come back what options do the Cubs have to fix this problem? Could Lugo be signed and play 2B/leadoff thus pushing Izturis to the 8th spot (again assuming Murton will bat 2nd)? If Hendry makes this move he would have some extra middle infielders/prospects to make a deal and get Andruw Jones or Drew (Tims thought) for CF. Drew would give the Cubs an added left bat and then they could get the best available righty to platoon/pinch hit with for Jones. Or....Get Soriano for 2B and move Jones to CF. Then, sign or trade for the best available RF. If the RF can lead off fine and if not put Murton in the leadoff slot. Also, why not put Murton in RF....he can't be any worse than Jones, and get a leadoff/good OBP guy for left? The Cubs have Theriot and Cedeno around for cheap and decent backups. I think either option still leaves room $$$ for a free agent starting pitcher.
  11. If the Cubs actually had a manager that have some guts to platoon Jones I'd be thrilled. All I can hear is "We're not paying him that kind of money to play part time". God forbid actually winning games be more important.
  12. I thought the Brewers were going to have a better season than they did and the way the teams in the Central haved played they should have seized that opportunity. The Cubs didn't improve themselves last off season in my eyes so I didn't expect much. Baker needs All-Stars out there to win and the Cubs were a team far away from that.
  13. Well continuing to pitch Wood last year worked so well for the Cubs they figured they would try it again.
  14. I don't believe anything that is written at this point of the season about any speculation signing of a free agent. I do think that Hendry will be interested in Soriano but if he replaces Murton in left the Cubs are making the wrong move yet once again.
  15. It could have been in either but since you wanted it here I moved it. I think it's time for a wholesale change. It has gotten much worse and it's time to see what's out there to improve this team.
  16. It would help the Dusty I have an excuse for everything maching to sit Lee. He can say Lee missed X amount of games to add to his excuseathon.
  17. Syracuse vs Illinois.....does it get any bigger than that? Oh, it's in football, darn.
  18. ND didn't beat any good teams last year and we don't know how good Penn State and Michigan will end up being this year. You can't give a team credit for winning a game early in the season against a highly ranked team if that team ends up having an average year that year. It's just like with Pittsburgh and Michigan last year. Those games looked like big victories and many people continued to mention that Notre Dame beat Michigan when they were ranked #3 in the nation and they beat a ranked Pittsburgh team. Neither of those teams ended up being very good last year so why should ND get credit for beating a good team when said team ends up being no more than an average team. If Penn State finishes the year 5-6, it's obvious that ND's victory over them wasn't actually that impressive. I would argue that Notre Dame's victory over PSU is still pretty impressive even if they finish 5-6, just not as impressive. It doesn't get much more one-sided than 41-3. So, how impressive is Auburn's win over Miss St or LSU's over Arizona? We don't know. What if Arizona finishes 4-7 and Penn State finishes 5-6? Which team's victory was more impressive? That's why it's stupid to start clamoring about strenght of schedule after two goshdarn games! That's the thing that bothers me a lot about polls. Teams that are not that good but are assumed to be good get killed by a decent team early and that decent team shoots up the polls and is very hard to knock off even though more deserving teams are behind them.
  19. Tough loss....how many times can you do the same thing and get the same results? I will never understand why you wouldn't open up the offense on the one and try to get a yard that way. It's not like Syracuse even has a deep threat to begin with. Great job by Iowa stuffing the run and my hats off to them. I also think that Ferentz has a lot of class. Not bad for the worst team in the Big East against one of the best in the Big Ten.
  20. Maybe I'm wrong but wasn't Patterson a first half hitter? It just seems to me he struggles in the second half. I'm not sure what your point is? Patterson's numbers are what they are for a full season, however he got there. My hope in Pie's second half this year is that as a 21 year-old he is still improving. Even so, I think we would all settle for Pie's 2008 & 2009 to be as good as Patterson's 2003 & 2004. Assuming he's still with the Cubs of course. My point is that Patterson hits well during the first half of the season andthen tails off while Pie seemed to be getting hotter as the season progressed. I would look at a few things....CPatt gets tired or pitchers figure him out. Pie, figures the pitchers out or gets stronger as season progresses. I like the fact that Pie is adapting and hitting better as the season progresses and I hope he continues to do so. Has anyone heard on how well his defensive play is going?
  21. I just don't see any good options at all if Ramirez leaves unless he signs with the Yanks and they trade ARod to the Cubs. I agree if Ramirez does indeed leave to go young as we have had in another thread and in CFP's Act II. I'd also look into trading Lee, Jones and Barrett unless the Cubs feel they can contend in 2008. I still don't see Wood pitching in 2007 until the season has already been determined one way or another and I refuse to count on him.
  22. --Joe Paterno If he, or anyone for that matter, believes that Penn State has half the history of Notre Dame then he really is completely senile. another golden domer crawls out of the woodwork Well, the statement of half is stretching it, but Penn State certainly does not have the overall history of ND. Overall Record ND-811-266-42 (75.3 win percent (excluding ties)) Penn State-771-339-42 (69.4 win percent) Overall Titles ND-11 Penn State-2 Titles Since Paterno took over ND-4 Penn State-2 When comparing overall history, Penn State has been a very good football team-not in the class of ND though-Penn State has the 3rd best overall winning percentage in the Big 10. Now-does that give ND an advantage on Saturday? Of course not-but there are significant differences in their overall histories. Penn State got robbed in at least two years IMO too, 69 and 94. In 69 they had Franco Harris AND Lydell Mitchell....wow. FWIW, I submit 1993, when FSU and ND both finished 11-1, ND beat FSU in head to head play, and the pollsters gave it to FSU under the little-known "if one coach already has a title, then give it to the other out of sympathy" clause. Wouldn't have been so infuriating except that in 1989 Miami and ND were in the same situation (Miami beat ND, two one-loss teams) and they gave it to Miami, as well they should have, then reversed their logic four years later. My problem with that is that Penn State won every game each of those years. That's all you can ask and if you lose a game you get what you get.
  23. Who says he's not fast? He's been successful in 83% of his stolen base attempts (5/6). In all honesty, he reminded me a little of Moises the other night when stealing 2nd. He may not be the speedster that Pierre is, but he picks the right moments and gets great jumps. I didn't say that correctly. He's not "fast" in the sterotypical I'm Dusty Baker or Joe Morgan and I haven't learned a single thing about baseball since 1974 mold. I know -- I was just busting your chops. I agree with you. I've got no disagreements with anyone sporting a Hawk helmet! You will after they lose this weekend! :sunny: Hey, I want fast, strong armed power hitting good IsoD guys that have a great clubhouse presence that sign autographs in the stands for hours after the game.
  24. Huh? Defensively. Strong up the middle defense. Offensively? We have another story. In other words, an area where we need help. Considering the Cubs have such a successful track record of developing position players to the major league Cub level, I'd rather pick up a FA IFer like we've always done. We've seen alot of these guys come up and no one stuck - not even Augie. I don't think that's sound justification to judge the guys we have in AAA now as failures-to-be and not give them a chance over guys like Neifi, Mabry, Lenny Harris, et al. That could also be due partially to how we have handled guys like Theriot and Fontenot in the past. We give the Bobby Hills and Hee Seop Chois all of the chances in the world, but we've never been good about giving chances to guys who ceilings are that of solid role players and not all-stars. And Martinez even. Yeah, he was a decent player but he always seemed to be injured. I do believe in the concept of having a solid bench because of all the day games but you're right, get those starters locked up ASAP. I understand that sometimes a good bench guy may be highly sought after and thus a lot of competition for his services but Hendry has signed way too many below average subs at high prices and as you said...too early and screwing up the budget.
  25. Maybe I'm wrong but wasn't Patterson a first half hitter? It just seems to me he struggles in the second half.
