  1. I thought you would know before us Mr. Wilk(ens)! I have to assume that they would know or make the decision once the WS ends. Free agnecy starts what...15 days after the WS?
  2. I would like him as a 4th OF/PH if he was a heck of a lot cheaper. Can he play first?
  3. Then you must be rooting for Syracuse because they are not in the top ten....I have no idea why. Wow...no Illinois guys out there, just basketball fans, eh? You're the 3 point favorite so far. I'm here, I just don't want to be accused of being fairweather when I run into hiding for losing to [expletive] Syracuse. Who knows who is going to win this game but at least you and I can exchange pleasantries while the others are hiding for some reason will be razzed or can say nothing about this game when they come out of the shadows during the basketball season. I think I know exactly the reason why an Illinois or Syracuse football fan would be hiding right now. I really can't believe U of I is the favorite. i want to exchange pleasantries too! i also am curious as to why u of i is the favorite. the only way i can envision illinois ever beating a non-eiu team is if the opposition doesn't understand the rule about quarterbacks being allowed to make forward progress and is simply confused about what is happening as isaiah williams runs by them. May the pleasantries begin! I thought for sure I would be able to trade barbs with all the Illinois people that are on here for this game....like Frado, you guys broke my heart! I think this is a big game for both of these second year coaches. I think the only reason Illinois is the favoirite is because they are at home because both teams are struggling to say the least. Don't you guys have a couple of pretty good RB's?
  4. That one is a lose lose for me. Why isn't Jeb Bush a choice? Go Jeb!
  5. Not if the Twins, White Sox or Tigers were in the WS. That's right they didn't play well against them! Go Yankees!
  6. So if the Cubs made the playoffs they'd win the World Series unless they had to play the Padres.
  7. The difference in that OBP is ~20 extra times on base over the course of the year. Off hand I don't know the probability of a player scoring(this would of course vary with how many XBH make up the 20 extra times on base), but if half those times the player scores it's basically equivalent to a full win. I'd consider that pretty significant. EDIT: And a .333 OBP is 3.33 times out of 10 on base(not 3), and a .365 is 3.65 times out of 10(not 3.5) batting in front of lee and ramirez makes it very significant. That could be a difficult thing to do with Ramirez playing on another team.
  8. On the Cubs.com site, it has JP current obp as .330 for the season. Ichiro's obp is .360. I'm not advocating JP over Ichiro, just pointing out that even tho Ichiro's obp is .30% points higher, that is not a significant difference. To add to that Irchiro can throw the ball so it gets to the base he's throwing to in the air and has more power.
  9. I would hate a manager like that. A manager should have to explain himself to the GM when asked, unless the GM is asking him about every little thing. If Joe can't handle a superior asking him why he did something it doesn't speak well for his ability to work within the hierarchy of an organization. I agree with you goon. The more I read about Girardi, the more I sour on him as manager of the Cubs. I'm not a big Girardi proponent, but reading too much into the little big of info that leaks out to the media is probably not a great way to evaluate the guy. I've read a lot about Loria being pretty petty when he wants to be too, so it's certainly feasible that he's leaking all the "bad" info about Girardi. I'm trying to limit my judgement to his actual game management performance, because there's just too much contradiction in the other stuff. You're probably right. I read somewhere that Joe left the field in the first couple of innings while his team was still playing. One of his players smashed his old catchers equipment with a bat in the clubhouse.
  10. I would assume the M's would have done that for salary relief in 2007. That trade doesn't make a lot of sense for the M's imo.
  11. Three things come to mind: (1) Ichiro is under contract for $11M in 2007. Free agent after the 2007 season. (2) Near as I can tell, he did not get a no-trade clause in his last deal. (3) On several occasions last year and last offseason, Suzuki questioned Seattle's commitment to winning and their managerial choice. If there is a private feeling amongst Seattle management and/or Ichiro that he will not be a Mariner in 2008, it may be in everybody's best interest to deal him this offseason. Cubs certainly have the financial wherewithall to get him, and his OBP would be a big improvement. I think if the Cubs did get him he'd have to play CF. If he didn't, then the Cubs have to get a power hitter for CF or 2B and what would they do with Murton and Jones?
  12. Could he play CF? What's his contract like?
  13. A thread like this means that Baker is going to start Pagan in the next game. I've always liked Murton and I think he'll do fine as the corner OF for the Cubs. What worries me is that Hendry looks at different numbers and thinks that Pierre and Jones are the best hitting OF's and Murton is the weak link.
  14. I agree. Is there a place this guy actually does know how to play?

  16. Daytona broadcasters said that the D-Cubs pitchers liked the way he called games too. So logically the Cubs will move him to LF. Granted I haven't seen the kid play but from what I've read I just do not understnad this organization. While some aspects of his catching game are good, other aspects of his defense are pretty bad. Also, another thing to keep in mind is that in the FSL, Fox could DH on his days off as a catcher. He can't do that at AA and higher (pitchers bat, no DH), so playing in the OF is one way to keep his bat in the lineup. Pat Listach definitely talked up Fox getting some playing time in the OF, but we're still at the point where we can't tell if the Cubs have lost faith in his defense or if they just want Fox to get a few games under his belt in other positions. Fox supposedly will catch and play other positions at the AFL. Thanks for the info raisin. I wish these minor league games were on TV.
  17. I think that sounds a bit selfish and shortsighted. Maybe the Cubs can sign McGriff and have him try to get his 500th HR while they're at it.

  19. Was he better than Len or Bob or both? :D
  20. There are no guarantees in life. Baker may very well be unemployed in 2007. I'm sure he could find work in a comedy club somewhere. Yogi Berra look out, Dusty's on his way.
  21. "Hey look an old man let's listen!" "The point is to tell a long pointless story that doesn't go anywhere. Like one time I had to go on a ferry to Shelbyville, I needed a new heel for my shoe so I decided to go to Morganville which is what Shelbyville was called back then. So, I tied an onion to my belt...which was the style at the time. Now to take the ferry cost a nickel and back then nickels had pictures of bumblebees on them. Give me 5 bees for a quarter we'd say. Where was I? Oh yeah, the point is I had an onion tied to my belt which was the style at the time. Now we didn't have white ones...we had big yellow ones because of the war."
  22. as if thats good Carrie... http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20060911&c ontent_id=1657178&vkey=news_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc With a 1-2 lineup like that the Cubs are assured of picking 1 or 2 in the draft. Where did the Dodgers bat Izturis? In 2004, Izturis batted about 2/3 of the time at leadoff, and about 1/3 of the time in the 2 spot. In 2005, it was just about all at the leadoff spot. I'm thinking that they batted him primarily in the 7 spot when he came back to the team this year, but I don't have the splits with the Cubs and with the Dodgers in front of me here. And they went on their hot streak after they got rid of him, interesting.

  24. How does the 7 spot protect a guy from running? Whether or not he gets on base is entirely up to him. And once he gets on base, his best chance to not run is to have a guy up to bat who will hit a homerun. In the 7th spot, you probably have a far great chance to have to try to break up double play grounders or move to 2nd on sac bunts and whatnot. Besides, the team is eliminated from competition, it's not like they are desperate for a 2 hole hitter who will "make things happen" on the bases right now. The 2nd hitter should never be stealing with the sluggers at the plate, and you wouldn't hit and run there either. This is just Dusty outthinking himself by using his dated, and failed logic/strategy to sound like a true baseball man. Man, I'm going to miss Dusty. Ok...just the quotes.
  25. I don't know, that's why I put the ?. I should have just asked like you did to avoid confussion. I think they're both just arby eligible. I hope I'm right, but I have a feeling that only Pagan will be with us next year. Neither Pagan nor Bynum are arbitration eligible, let alone free agents. They had a combined service time of about a week coming into this season. So they can still be sent to Iowa then? How many options do they have left?
