    I think that's because this board sees him as a better hitter, which may end up being true, but the other guys are doing it as infielders. Also, the injury thing. But I think position is the bigger factor.

    I have a fourteen inch titanium rod in my leg to this day from a similar injury THE DAY AFTER I graduated high school ('95). Doc said it was the cleanest break he had ever seen, my leg was beyond 90 degrees to the outside just like this, but didn't break the skin (though it pressed against skin and stretched it abt an inch) Friend tried to take my legs out "play at the plate style". Put his shoulder through both of my leg bones. I rolled onto my back to flip myself up, and foot flopped to the right (right leg). I was enough in shock that I didn't feel all the pain I should have, until paramedic straightened it out to put in cradle and on board to carry me to ambulance. Doctor didn't set the small bone and didn't cast it, as the rod was "much stronger than both bones combined. The day after surgery (removing kneecap, drilling out tibia, inserting rod, replacing patella) they had me on crutches, trying to put ever so slight weight on my big toe. I passed out and threw up, in that order. In 2 weeks and 2 days I was walking with a cane. Giant calcium deposit that acts as a barometer, but beyond that, no trouble nearly 20 years later. Until I saw these pictures. Now I am reliving every moment.

    Listen to the man, Billy. Darwin Barney is of immeasurable value. Do whatever it takes to get him. Maybe he should realize that requesting Barney start when he pitch was part of the reason he got such minimal run support. That was my first reaction as well.

    I understand that, I guess it just hit me that how bonifacio was used may be exactly how alcantara will be used. It's the specificity of roles that is standing out to me today. Clearly I'm late to the party.

    Yeah, he's going to play the role of Bonifacio for now. Is it just me or is it very clear EXACTLY who (and in the same role) each of our super prospects will be replacing? Almost as though each of the stop gaps was brought in to hold a very specific spot... I think it's very much up in the air. Are you saying Starlin is a placeholder for Russell? I really think that they have a lot of options with the types of players they have in the minors. Everything is up in the air because some of the super prospects may not make it and/or will be traded for pitching at some point. Not so much Russell and Castro, but definitely bonifacio, olt, Sweeney, Barney for alcantara, Bryant, Soler and Baez. Obvious it is possible (probable?) they don't all pan out, and you have to "plan b" it here and there, but it seems like there's a connection.

    Except that free agents like Lester aren't knocking down the door to sign with a perennial cellar-dweller. If you can do it without including any of our top 50 guys, do it.

Had you chosen to acknowledge the context, my point was more that pitching is dominant this year, and numbers that I used to view as impressive, are now the norm. Maybe its just me, but I had adjusted my expectations on hitters, but was still subconsciously impressed with an ERA in the mid 4's and an xFIP of around 4. Maybe everyone else already knew this, but it just struck me yesterday. Pitchers are dominating. Change "Travis Wood is bad" to "Travis Wood is slightly below average, and much less impressive than I had thought" if it makes you feel better. I would have responded quicker, but the effort to change my username made my account "inactive" for awhile. Great performance by Wood. I hope he keeps it up. That doesn't change the fact that he's slightly to significantly below average on the year. You know, we could have just renamed your Mr. Wood account rather than you create a new account. I sent Tim a pm asking for exactly that.

    Still one game better than the worst record in baseball. and we're about to get swept by the cardinals. this is gonna be rough. No, I go to at least one game here every year and I haven't seen a Cubs loss in several years. I'm going Wednesday so we should take that one to avoid the sweep. This is your year, man.
