  1. Rusin is officially cut. That makes our 2014 Opening Day Roster Lake/Sweeney/Schierholtz (Ruggiano, Kalish) Olt/Castro/Barney/Rizzo (Bonifacio, Valbuena) Castillo (Baker) Samardzija/Wood/Jackson/Hammel/Villanueva (ability order, not order we're using them to start year) Veras/Strop/Rondon/Grimm/Cabrera/Russell/Wright DL: Fujikawa, Arrieta Everything about this roster is just unrelentingly bad and I guess you never know about bullpens, except the infield has some nice offensive potential. The 13 position players accumulated 12.3 fWAR total in the majors last year, less than one per player.
  2. So maybe I missed this but have: Ben Wells Eric Jokisch Austin Reed Dustin Geiger Elliot Soto Matt Loosen all been released as well? No, but if any of them were, it wouldn't exactly set off a riot.
  3. Reggie Golden released. Matt Szczur and Dallas Beeler are all that stand between the 2010 draft class and the ignominy of not having a single player appear in the majors.
  4. AZPhil lists Soler as "Limited Activity" and apparently he hasn't been playing in minor league games?
  5. This is like a sting operation, right? Anyone who votes Grace or Sandberg gets banned?
  6. Arguello is Dave Cameron light. Just because a guy puts up a web site doesn't mean anyone has to care what he has to say.
  7. By "nursing home" I assume he means "death panel waiting room."
  8. I think the Hawks are just gassed. Packed schedule post-lockout + deep Cup run + half the team playing in the Olympics this year. They could surprise me, but the West is just too good this year to expect much out of them in the playoffs.
  9. If you look at who we've been connected with, we've been really good at identifying undervalued/ready-to-break-out pitching. We were nearly there on Sanchez, heavy on Liriano, and supposedly interested in Jimenez for his bounceback potential before he actually did it. Of course, good thing we only got participation ribbons on all of them, otherwise we might not be picking fourth in the upcoming draft.
  10. But it's going to keep happening, so rending the clothes and gnashing the teeth every single time it does is like whining every time something goes wrong for the Cu-OH MY GOD, NOW I UNDERSTAND. And the fact that people always whine doesn't mean that they aren't occasionally right. I have no problem with most of the big contracts. This one was dumb. Ryan Howard's was dumb.
  11. The fact that someone would have done it doesn't make it OK to do it. Zell was always going to find his sucker, but that doesn't make it OK for Ricketts to be that sucker.
  12. The fact that we're the worst doesn't mean I can't enjoy other teams being less bad but still bad. Detroit is bad? They made a bad decision here.
  13. The fact that we're the worst doesn't mean I can't enjoy other teams being less bad but still bad.
  14. The reaction of the Boston forum game thread on Hfboards is still my favorite thing on the internet, ever.
  15. I'm jealous that they already had Miguel Cabrera for two more years. I'm not jealous that they just couldn't want to spaz out and buy his late 30s when they didn't need to.
  16. derwood=jorts meph=khalil greene The classics never stop being classic.
  17. lol@Tigers. That's dumb.
  18. Well then you better clone a hitter worthy of getting slot at 4. Draft someone who won't sign and take the fifth pick next year.
  19. As cool of a story as he is, there's a really good chance that Kalish really sucks.
  20. Then you may want to take a pitcher this year. Never!
  21. I will be severely disappointed if we ever go major underslot with a top-5 pick.
  22. Cubs win 89 games and sneak into the second wild card. Travel to Washington for the WC game, which we win 5-3 after Javier Baez hits a 3-run homer in the top of the ninth. Then get swept 3-0 by the Cardinals in the NLDS without ever holding a lead.
  23. If he's starting on Monday, then I really don't care.
