  1. I'd wait awhile. If others have selected a firstbasemen, the run is over. Tracy, Fielder, Giambi, and Morneau can be productive. Since it's a keeper league, I'd tarket Tracy, Morneau, or Fielder. Would you go with best available player which would most likely be an OF or perhaps a 3rd baseman (of which Chavez, Rolen, Blalock, Glaus, and C. Jones are still available)? I'm also eyeing Nathan. I'd probably go BPA unless I was already covered there.

  3. The reigning champ is in! Will it be five NSBB vs five Cards Talk again this year?
  4. Funny, however just make sure children aren't around for that one  They may be the one wearing it.
  5. Ohman was the only player who was arbitration eligible late in this process making under $2 million, I believe. Is the impact of setting an example with a guy like Ohman remotely close to that of helping to set the market value of bullpen pitches? If Jim wanted to set an example, why not do it by not signing Scott Eyre to a three-year deal that's worth up to nearly $15 million instead? Eyre hasn't really shown he's any more effective than Ohman. If Jim is so willing to throw around those kinds of deals for the bullpen, what short or long-term benefit would going to arbitration have? Is it not possible that contracts like the one Eyre got have a bigger impact on an arbitration eligible bullpen pitcher's demands than letting get Ohman $100,000-$250,000 more? Only players in their final years can compare their situation to all of MLB. A player like Ohman would only be able to compare himself to other first year arbitration guys. Contracts like the one given to Eyre could affect arbitration cases, but only those players in their final year of arbitration.
  6. Terms already posted on this board are correct. Thanks. Is it looking more likely that Walker remains with the team or do you see him dumped in spring training? Also, do you anticipate an extension happening with Pierre in ST or will that be after the season? Finally, are the Cubs attempting to sign Zambrano for only one year or to a multi-year deal? The way it's going, Walker probably goes to spring training with the Cubs. Who knows? It might be the best trade they never made. The Cubs likely will talk with Pierre and Lee in spring training about extensions. For now, the Cubs will sign Zambrano to a one-year deal. He's not a free agent after this season, so there's no big hurry. He's got a new agent, and I'm sure they'd like to see how things play out. If he has another good year, I see the Cubs talking about a long term with him next winter. Thanks. I'm really hoping nothing works out as a trade on the Walker front. I have a feeling that if he's on the team, Dusty will start him...at least against right handers.

  8. Bruce, any word on the terms of the Ohman and Pierre deals?
  9. I think the Daily Herald article provides some excellent insight as to why the Cubs aren't eager to meet Ohman's demads. The article goes on to indicate that Ohman has earned most of his service time while on the DL. It's not like he's been pitching effectivel for more than a season. The comparisons to Wuertz are on point as well. I think the cubs have an excellent chance of winning this one.
  10. I wouldn't have added him for the simple reason I don't think there's any reason to have believed he could have stuck on a major league roster at that time. The move was premature based on that.
  11. Maybe it's time to include both Pie and Rich Hill in a package for Dunn... ':-k'
  12. Go here. http://www.mastersball.com/sickels/company.htm I'm always torn on how much of his info I should share because I really think everyone should buy the book. John is freelancing now that ESPN streamlined their coverage with BA and he does an excellent job. His approach is much different than BA and I think he brings a unique perspective.
  13. He did not grade Murton in this year's book. Murton received a C+ in last year's book and C+ in the 2004 as well. Hill got a B- in the 2006 book, a C in the 2005 book, and a C in the 2004 book. This was Sickels's concluding remark about Hill.
  14. I surely hope LSU can get Deas eligible, because he's going to be a monster in that defense. I'm looking forward to Deas on the defensive line and Taj Eugene in the secondary. Wow!
  15. That would fit Goonys profile of a vet from a crap team. That it would.
  16. It's just a matter of him qualifying. That's why FSU cooled on him towards the end. If he gets in, he'll be a beast. This is LSU. Accademics aren't always at a premium there.
  17. My guess is that if Barrett gets hurt, it wouldn't take much to trade for Javy Lopez.
  18. LSU has picked up a verbal commitment from Deas, though his signed letter hasn't been received yet. This is a big pick-up for the Tigers.
  19. but I highly doubt that they want their streak of not going to arbitration that they brag about so much to end with a guy like Will Ohman. I'm not sure why they are hung up on such a small dollar difference. If they want, I can chip in 20 or so bucks and that should get it done. I didn't really like Ohman that much last year anyways. I know his stats were pretty good, but I just got that feeling of impending doom everytime I saw him warming up in the pen. I don't think the Cubs are opposed to going to arbitration as much as they do like to avoid it. I think the Cubs want players to feel that if they are fair in their requests, the Cubs will be fair in finding a midpoint. I do think they are wary of players who try to take advantage of that, and in my opinion the Cubs think Ohman is trying to take advantage of that. Ohman is also a player that I doubt the Cubs are worried about ticking off in the arbitration process. They may be very willing to use him as an example to players who think the Cubs would not go to arbitration at all costs.
  20. LSU's recruiting class has gotten a boost as Jai Eugene has switched his commitment with Michiagn and signed with LSU.
  21. Once again...top notch answers from da Len.
  22. I've gotten the LSU site loaded so I can get up to the minute news. So far they've received letters from four of the expected signees.
  23. I don't think the Cubs can. The problem for the Cubs is that the players that teams want in these deals the Cubs can't afford to give. The Cubs aren't offering Prior or Zambrano. Wood is injured and Maddux is too old. So, when that is taken into account, The Cubs lack the pitcher with the ability and track record of Contreras to include in such a deal. That, I think, all along has been the problem with Hendry pulling a deal for a big bat. Teams that want to contend this year are asking for Prior or Zambrano because after that all the Cubs have that interests them is prospects. While we certainly can compete in deals where teams want prospects (ie the acquiring of Pierre), we have more difficulty getting players in the good ole fashioned baseball swaps because or top line talent is non-tradeable in most deals and we lack the provenmid-range guys that teams seek.
  24. I think Ohman is likely the most problematic for the Cubs. While the money difference isn't that great, I think the Cubs see Ohman a lot like a renewable contract guy and think they should pay him as such. Ohman only has the service time due to his placement on the DL. He has really only pitched one season in MLB and so the Cubs don't think he should be rewarded much more than they would reward any second year player. He gets a slight bump, but I don't think the Cubs feel he deserves what he's asking for. I also think the Cubs feel with his having only pitched one real MLB season that his case is a very winnable one.
  25. I don't know John to ask for a chat. But I'll send an email when I get a chance. That's cool. Any chance Jim Callis will come by again?
