  1. Considering his boss said there were issues, I think that supports it right there. I wouldn't expect Beinfest to outline all the issues. Those are personel matters. I don't call it rumor when the one who makes the hires says that he wasn't cooperative. I think that's getting it from about as close to the source as you can. Certainly, you might argue that Beinfest is lying, but wouldn't that be speculating as well. Sure, it is all speculation, thats the problem. It is my opinion that Beinfest has to "sell" this firing. Would you agree? Girardi, didn't set the world on fire, but he had a lot more success with that team than anybody would have ever thought at the beginning of the year. There was a blowup with loria and it has all been downhill from there. I tend to think that was the main issue and Girardi didn't have a chance to save his job after that. All of this other talk can support the firing. It is all speculation though. I really don't think Beinfest has to sell this firing. It's not like the Marlins have a huge fan base he's worried about pissing off. He's already conducted a fire sale which unloaded most of the team's popular talent and may complete the job with a trade of the D-train. I think he's speaking honestly as to why they are willing to cut ties with a manager whose hiring they just heraled a year ago.
  2. A situation with a runner on first and no one out gives you a run expectancy of .40. A situation with a runner on second and one gives a run expectancy of .41. So, really, what does sac bunting really accomplish?
  3. Mid-November would be pathetic. As I said in another thread, as a sitting GM who is looking to replace a lame duck manager whom he previously hired, and following several months of knowing he was likely going to need to replace the guy, and hopefully at least several weeks of knowing he was going to replace him, there is no justification to wait out October looking for that replacement. Hendry should have had a list by early August, at the latest. When he was "reviewing" everything, he should have included contingencies for if he made a move. That would entail a list, and that list would include his assessment on the likelihood/possibility of getting a guy. This hiring process, like almost everything else Hendry has done, is flawed from the beginning. Just playing the advocate here, but how does Hendry have a complete list in August when some of his likely candidates were still gainfully employed and not allowed to be contacted? He could have a list of who he would want. That list could have been broken down into gorups of those available and those not. He could still have contacted scouts, former GM's, and others to gather info about those on his list. He might not know if he can get his top choice due to availability, but he should have made enough evaluations for this process to take a week at best.

  5. What controlling tendencies? I have to ask again. In another thread you refrenced some quotes by Beinfest. What do you think he is going to say? He has to make this firing look good, because a lot have/will continue to question it. I'll give you the blowup with Loria, which I think was justified. That is the only thing we know of for sure. All of this other stuff is merely speculation, all from the guys who did the firing and need to make it look justified. Whether you want to believe Beinfest or not, his comments are part of the record. You choose not to believe him, I choose to lend some credence to his statement which certainly implies that Girardi was not willing to cooperate and collaborate with the front office. Maybe it's spin, but maybe it's not. Maybe his lashing out at Loria is proof that he has issues with authority, maybe it's not. But it is certainly enough to cause reservations. Do you beleive Hendry when he praised Dusty? Actually, I do. I think Hendry kept Dusty around this whole season because he kept wanting something to happen that he could use as a justification for extending him.
  6. I get the impression that Brenly is more like a Mike Golic, tolerating the little guy who never played the game that's sitting next to him, and humoring him by listening to his stories, but not taking him seriously. I don't think 2 years is long enough for him to learn new tricks. Wasn't Dierker an announcer for like 15 years or something? Those concerns are valid, and I don't know enough about Brenly and his willingness to consider new ideas and whether two years is long enough or not. If I were doing the hiring, I'd look outside Brenly, Piniella, or Girardi. But, if I were asked to choose between those three, I'd pick Brenly and hope for the best.

  8. If waiting to hear Baker comment on the Tigers' game so he can tell the national audience how Neifi saved us!
  9. If we were getting the same Brenly who was in Arizona, I'd have to somewhat agree with you. I'm of the persuasion that people, or at least some people, are able to learn from their encounters and environments. Brenly has spent two years in the booth with Len who seems to be an astute student of the game. I'm hoping some of those ideas have rubbed off on BB. I know the same thing happened for Dierker. In his book, he mentions that the stats used while he was a broadcaster helped him develop and mold philosophies he had as a manager. Maybe I'm too optimisitc in this fashion, but I would hope that in Brenly, this would be the case as well. With Girardi, I am concerned about his blow-up with Loria. I'm also concerned about his controlling tendencies. Those may play well with the 14-million dollar Marlins, but I'm not so sure they will play well with a veteran team. I'm also concerned, that while the Marlins performed above expectations, they really didn't win anything. They were a below-500 club. I think the facination with Girardi is more the ex-Cub factor than anything.
  10. FWIW, the error message has stopped for me! :)

  12. I don't think Brenly is the best choice for the Cubd manager, but I do think he is the best choice from the names I've heard the Cubs rumored to be considering.
  13. I think the only way Stone is back in the booth is if Brenly is the manager. So, those who want Stone in the booth and Girardi as manager, if you could only have one or the other, which would it be?
  14. I'd agree that signing Zambrano shouldn't be number one. Zambrano is a Cub for 2007, no matter what. Do I want him signed to a long term deal? Certainly! But, the pressing need for it to happen on a certain time table isn't as pressing as choosing a new manager, signing Ramirez to an extension, and filling the holes on this team.
  15. I don't like the idea of a mid-Novemeber timetable. I'd hope the Cubs would have a manager hired before the end of the World Series.
  16. They won't give up their first round pick, that's for certain, but not their 2nd - 4th round picks. Of course, they might do away with compensatory picks completely. But we could get an extra first rounder if Pierre is a Type A FA. If Ramirez opts out, he'd definitely be a Type A. Do we forfeit those picks if we grab some Type A's of our own? I think it's pretty likely we sign at least one Type A, if not more. I don't think you do, but I may be wrong.
  17. Who comes back will depend on the new manager. I doubt any of those come back if Girardi or Piniella is hired. Brenly could choose to bring some back depending on his relationship with them.
  18. Girardi is now an "insubordinate"? That spin machine out of south beach is amazing. They got Kathleen Harris working for them? I don't know where you work, but if I told my boss to shut-up, yes I'd be written up for insubordination. Didn't you say that Girardi told Loria to screw off? If so, that's insubordination. Maybe Fred should comment on reading comprehension again.
  19. speaking of personal attacks. :? That sounded like a fairly generic statement to me.
  20. <-- off to start the thread criticizing Raisin for being on the list of potential managers. :hsughwiggle: =; I don't fight with my supervisors, I've never called for a suicide squeeze in Game 7 of the World Series and I'm not Lou Piniella. I should call Hendry and ask why he hasn't hired me yet. Can you use a run-expectancy chart? Yes. In fact, I invented it. :^o You can be my bench coach. Hired! Cool...I get to wear a uniform and everthing! And if you have a major league uniform....chix4free!
  21. I'm starting to see why he values Girardi's insubordination so much.

  23. Whether you think he is the best choice or not, the other contestents could begin to file off stage soon. one already has. I'm passionate about Girardi. You are equally as passionate about Dierker. If Dierker is hired to tomorrow as the Cubs manager I certainly won't complain. However is there any evidence to suggest that he wants to get back into managing. I haven't found any. Maybe I simply missed something and there is evidence. If so Girardi is still #1 on my list but Dierker would be a very close second. And even without Dierker, I think there are better choices than Girardi. If I can't have Dierker, I'd like Davey Johnson. If not him, I think Brenly would be a better choice than Girardi. I'd even prefer Bobby Valentine to Girardi.
  24. That would leave this board with people posting completely unconnected opinions, never addressing what anyone else thought unless they agreed That would be dumb I agree...but sheesh...it seemed like my opinion of McDonough really offended him. I don't believe that anybody is offended by your opionions. Those that have responded to you, including the moderators, have taken afront at the way you deliver those opinions. I suspect that if you don't heed their advice, you'll be meeting a fellow called Modzilla. Where have I personally attacked anyone on the board in this thread? I don't like McDounough, which dates back to the ticket scalping incident. He is a salesman and I don't trust him. And the hire/promotion angers me. If you are gonna ban me for not having optimistic attitude, then so be it. If most of your opinions were stated in such fashion, you would be better off. In other words leave off the lame and childish nicknames.
  25. Fired because he told Loria to basically screw off. If he did the same thing to Fitzsimmons, I'd probably want to marry the guy. To me it shows a lack of good judgement. I'd like a manager that shows better judgement, on and off the field. . He had an owner running his mouth to the umps on the field. He simply asked him to stop Once he had offeneded Loria, one of the biggest jerks in baseball, it was over. Ok, in one post you say he told Loria to screw off. In another you say he simply asked him to stop. Those are two different things. Which one was it? Or do you even know yourself? My guess is you don't care. You're so excited for Girardi, you really have no concern for what his relations with his superiors were. I do have those concerns. I'm also concerned that his controlling ways won't work with a veteran team. I'm also concerned that he's too tied to conventional wisdom. I'm also concerned that he's likely not the best choice because of all of these factors.
