  1. I'd rather have a hot poker shoved up my butt than to see the Cubs sign Jeff Weaver.
  2. Part of the reason Maddux hasn't signed with LA is that he's looking for a 2/17 deal. If he were willing to take a one-year deal, he'd have signed with the Dodgers already.
  3. Suppan is a league average pitcher. On a team with a great offense, he can be a number three. He's ok as a number four, and good as a number five. I wouldn't be opposed to Suppan. Saying he's not going to be worth his contract is going to be true of anyone signed this offseason. There will be very few bargains this winter.
  4. Defense doesn't matter. Petition to ban rolleyes because I'm really tempted to use it. No one ever said defense doesn't matter. I wish that were the case. Will this be the thread where you finally use evidence to support your claim? no quotes allowed! No, like always he dissapears when someone asks him to provide tangible support. It's easier than actually having proof for your statements.
  5. I'm not sure that will be the case next year. I don't know. It's hard to be worse at the plate than Ceasar.
  6. I'm not certain the Cubs are ignoring OBP. I know Soriano isn't great in that regards, but outside of Drew and Bonds, he's the best hitter on the market. Bruce gave us some insight in to why the Cubs wouldn't pursue Drew, so Hendry went out and signed the best hitter he could without getting into the issues surrounding Drew and Bonds. DeRosa's career OBP is not good, but he did have a 350 OBP last season. Hendry's biggest problem may not be a lack of regard for OBP but a failure to understand "career years" and regression to the mean.
  7. I think if he misses Schmidt, Padilla will become a target with Hendry looking to trade for another. If Hendry signs Schmidt, he can look for either another hitter or pitcher. Missing on Schmidt, he'll need two pitchers for certain.
  8. Rozner loves him some Maddux. Maddux's preference is to pitch for the Dodgers. Would he return? Maybe. I wouldn't hate the move. I wouldn't love it.
  9. FWIW, I don't think Peavy is going in a deal for prospects. Other than Pie and Hill, I don't think the Cubs have any untouchables. I wouldn't put Pie in that group. I'm sure there are many players they would prefer not to move and Gallagher is definitely in that group, along with Veal.
  10. If we sign Counsell to replace Izturis, I'm on board. Craig is a much better hitter than Ceasar.
  11. Oswalt was signed for 5/73 just recently. 6/90 seems fair considering the exploding value of contracts recently.
  12. Veal in any deal is a high price...If the Cubs are to trade him they better get someone with proven major league hitting ability...We've heard for years about can't miss prospects that miss Wouldn't that also apply to Veal? Why does Veal have more value than Dukes? Dukes is more likley to be an impact major leaguer than Veal. On any prospect list, Dukes is rated higher than Veal. If we had Dukes and the Rays had Veal, I bet we would be saying we wouldn't want to trade Veal for Dukes. To get something, you have to give up something.
  13. False How so? Roberts is quite a bit better. I would disagree with that. Then please, only if it's just this once, state your reasons why. WITHOUT STATISTICS!!!1111 Isn't that how he makes all his points?
  14. Come on Vance.....even u know that VORP is skewed as a metric in this case......but I do agree some Yankee-hatred factored into the vote.....however as an impartial observer Morneau was statistically better then Jeter In what way? Jeter was better in runs created and win shares. If you only think in terms of power numbers, then maybe, but there's more to creating runs than just hitting home runs. If that's the case, there were much better choices than Morneau.
  15. My guess is the Cubs could put Rusch on waivers. No one would claim him with his salary and medical condition. The Cubs would have to pay him, but it opens a roster spot.
  16. For the record, #21 should be retired. There's really no reason not to do it. It definitely should be retired before #31 is.
  17. So, the only reason I've seen that this is a good pick is because people don't like Jeter, the Yankees, or both. I don't get it. Morneau didn't have a bad season, but by all comprehensive metrics, Jeter was better. The voters have in two consecutive days screwed the pooch. VORP Jeter- 80.5 Morneau- 52.0 It's not even close.
  18. You know he signed that deal at 28 and will be 36 when it's done. I'm pretty sure he was 36 when he signed it, 44 when it's done. The Cardinals thought it weird that one of his contract demands was to be paid in Confederate dollars. I thought he wanted to be paid in shekles.
  19. It should have gone to Jeter. Runs Created: Jeter- 138 Morneau- 121 Win Shares: Jeter- 33 Morneau- 27 (Morneau didn't even have the highest win shares on his team.)
  20. You know he signed that deal at 28 and will be 36 when it's done.
  21. To put the contract, in context let's compare Pierre to Willie Wilson. Pierre's BA/OBP SB for ages 25-28. 305/361 65 376/374 45 276/326 57 292/330 58 Now, Willie Wilson's BA/OBP SB for ages 25-28 303/335 34 332/365 37 276/316 59 301/350 47 While Pierre was a hair better, both had OBP tied to BA and only had the advantage of being slap hitters with speed. So, what can the Dodgers assume to get for the next five years... well Wilson went 269/312 24 279/320 59 262/289 55 253/300 24 280/354 24 That's some ugly production for 9 million if Pierre follows Wilson's track, regardless of what the market might be.
  22. Well, so would I. But the difference in player cost between the two would be huge. In fact, I'm not sure we could put together a package for Baldelli but we likely could get Dukes.
  23. Players can compare to what similar players have recieved in that year of service time, except for players in their final year. Those players can compare their numbers to all comparable players.
  24. What if the upgrade is in the pitching department? What if Jones can be traded or a solid SP? I'd do that. Jones' 2006 would like nice in CF, but I wouldn't bet on him repeating that performance. I'd consider selling high (but not just dumping him). I said if it brings in an upgrade, I'd do it. I just don't see that deal out there right now. Yes, if Jones could be traded for a solid SP, I'd do the deal.
