  1. Is there a site out there anywhere, where you can put in projected numbers and it will give you an approximate number of runs scored by a team? What about for pitchers?
  2. In honor of this moment, I present this.
  3. The status que of pre and post Hendry is as much an indictment of Hendry's tenure as any I can think of. In four years the team has gone nowhere. The overall trend is flat. And that is a fair argument. The argument that the team has gotten worse every year he's been here is not.
  4. I'm not saying I agree with the move, but I can understand why MLB is making it. They see a huge windfall of cash with very little fallout except from some vocal fans who aren't likely to stop watching. Personally, I'd hope they'd think more of their fans, but I realize we're used to that by now.
  5. While I understand the angst of those who have gotten the package before and now will not. But, I think Sheehan hit the nail on the head when he said that MLB isn't likely to lose fans over it, and that's why taking the money is the smart move for them. With the introduction of regional sports networks, most areas of the country have baseball for viewing. It is the preference of the teams, that the local teams become the team of choice for those living in that area. This increases the advertising on those local networks and therefore increases rights fees for the broadcasts. The people buying EI in most cases are "super fans." These may be superfans for one team or baseball junkies in general. The one-team superfan may or may not switch to DirectTV, but they still aren't likely to quit baseball. They'll find other means of following their team or just watch more of the team in whose market they exist. Either way, there's no loss for MLB. The baseball junkie is likely to make the switch, and this is what DirectTV is hoping. Furthermore, if you were the type of person wanting to watch 6-10 hours of baseball a night, it's not likely that this move will cause you to stop watching baseball. This isn't a move that affects the casual fan because the casual fans weren't the ones buying the package.
  6. I think the roster looks ok. First the starters. (Those who can play more than one spot in parenthesis) C Barrett 1b Lee 2b Derosa (ss, 3b, rf, lf) SS Izturis (3b, 2b) 3b Ramirez LF Murton CF Soriano (RF/LF) RF Jones (CF?) Bench: Blanco C Ward RF/LF/1b Floyd RF/LF/1b Theriot 2b/SS/CF Pagan RF/LF/CF That's 13 guys right there. Depending on the number of pitchers, another infielder could be added. That could come from the group of Cedeno, Coats, Perez. I wouldn't be surprised to see a possible waiver wire pick-up near the end of the spring either. The pitching has depth if nothing else. SP: Zambrano, Lilly, Hill, Marquis, and Prior Bullpen: Dempster, Eyre, Howry, Wuertz, Cotts, Wood, and Ohman. That's a 12 man staff right there. I'm not sure who to bump off if we add another infielder to the bench. Furthermore, if Miller is healthy as well, he likely will take over a bullpen spot. My guess is that if everyone comes to camp healthy, Hendry will be making a deal or two.
  7. I've been as critical of Hendry as anyone else, but it is not true to say the team has gotten worse every year he's been here. In 2002, the team won 67 games. It improved to 88 wins in 2003 and then 89 wins in 2004. At that point, I was happy with the job Hendry had done. The 2004 team should have been a 92-94 win team. The last two seasons have been disasterous, as we slipped to 79 wins in 2005 and then 66 wins last season. The team is about where it was when Hendry took over. He improved it immensely in his first two years and has presided over it as it returned to its dismal levels of his first season. While there are plenty of reasons to criticize Jim's work over the past two seasons, let's not be dishonest in an effort to do so.
  8. Promotions are listed on Cubs.com. Link
  9. I'm sure the Saturday blackout deal is in FOX's contract, so it's not likely to end. Same with Sunday night and ESPN, when there is more than one game. When does the FOX contract expire?
  10. Why did they even have to add Shark to the 40-man? That seems short-sighted as now he has only 3 option years left. Had he not been added to the 40-man, he'd have some time for that to happen.
  11. If DirectTV is able to end the Saturday blackouts, I will be very happy. Right now, that is most frustrating to me.
  12. At the Convention, Hendry mentioned on multiple occasions that he had given Lou eight guys for the five spots. Based on the names he'd mention, those eight guys appear to be the following: Zambrano, Hill, Lilly, Marquis, Prior, Miller, Marshall, and Guzman. I guess Cotts might be there in the place of Guzman or Marshall. The only time I recall Cotts being mentioned is in regards to the pen. On a related notes, based on what I heard from Flieta, Hendry, and others, it appears Marmol's future will be in the pen. I can't find it in my notes, but I think it was in the Down on the Farm session where Flieta touted Marmol has having a future as a great 8th or 9th inning arm.
  13. They're on the pocket schedules I picked up at the Convention. PM me your address and I'll send you one. If I get bored at home tonight, I might decide to type them up and post them here.
  14. I think this is the roster we'll take to spring training. Some moves could be made that result from what Lou sees in the spring. Can Soriano handle CF? If he can't then, can Jones? Or, is Pie ready? If none of those are answered in the affirmative, Hendry likley will look for a CF candidate. How healthy is Floyd? Does Floyd still have the ability to play RF? If so, I could see Jones moved. How healthy is everyone in the rotation? If everyone looks really good and healthy, a surplus arm might be moved. I'd like to see a better RH bat for the bench added somewhere, but I don't anticipate that either. So, unless something happens in the spring to throw a wrench in the plans, I think this is the team we'll have. It's not a bad collection. It's the best group we've had since 2004. Let's hope they perform to my guardedly optimistic expectations.
  15. The Cowboys have reportedly hired Jason Garrett, but no one is sure for what. Link. It's rumored he's the OC, but some have said he could even end up the head coach. I think that might be a disaster, but Garrett as OC and Wade Phillips as a HC might not be a bad deal.
  16. This is a borderline bannable offense Vance. I really don't know why that post ended up that way. Sorry, guys.
  17. My first pick was BPA. Since I went offense with my first pick, and because I have to pick in pairs with a long wait between picks, I wanted to nail down the top of my rotation with my next picks. By grabbing two pitchers, I can now put that on the back-burner as I complete the rest of my team.
  18. Two pitchers in a row, Vance? Wow! Normally, not my way of doing things. But picking at the wrap around spot, I have to be wary of position runs and try to anticipate. By grabbing two aces, I can now focus on offense and only worry about pitchers if a bargain presents itself.
  19. I'm being optimistic that Floyd will not eat too heavily into Murton's AB's. If that's the case, I really like the construction of the offense. Soriano CF Derosa 2b Lee 1b Ramirez 3b Murton/Floyd LF Jones RF Barrett C Izturis SS That's a nice looking line-up. The bench with either Floyd/Murton, Theriot, Blanco, Ward, and Pagan or another player. I'd like a better RHed option for the bench, but it's not a bad group. The rotation still could be a problem, but there is some depth. I'm starting to become guardedly optimistic about this season.
  20. Don't worry what Muskat has to say, she is worthless! can we stop calling her Muskat? jesus. Is it really that big of deal? Obviously bigger than taking the Lord's name in vain... Pretty sad in my opinion. I would never type Muskat again if I didn't have to see the Lord's on this board again. I'm not sure I can ever stop talking about Kent.
  21. I think the roster is set. The only reason I could see them making another move would be if Soriano shows in spring that he cannot handle CF. Looking at the starting line-up, we have: C Barrett 1b Lee 2b Derosa SS Izturis 3b Ramirez LF Murton CF Soriano RF Jones On the bench we have: Theriot 2b/SS/CF Pagan LF/RF/CF Blanco C Ward RF/LF/1b Floyd RF/LF/1b While no one there can play 3b all that well, Derosa is, in my opinion, the one who will give Ramirez any rest he needs on a day to day basis. If he's put on a DL stay, Moore will be called up. Pie is really going to have to impress this spring to make the team, and that's a good plan. There may be another acquisition or if Pie looks really good, Jones could be dealt.
  22. Joe Sheehan weighs in on this. Link(subscriber content.) This quote is true on many levels.
