Correct. The mid point is 13.3 (roughly). If the arbiter thinks Z should make less than the mid point, then Zambrano gets a one-year deal of 11.025. If he thinks he should make more than the mid point, he gets the 15.5. While Oswalt signed a 5/73 contract, the break down of those dollars are 13, 13, 14, 15, and 16. The total contract is not taken into account in drawing comparisons, only what he's making in the first year of it. So, it is likely that the arbiter will rule that Z should make below the midpoint and rule in favor of the Cubs. In fact, I think Zambrano over-reached on his amount making it very likely that the Cubs will win this. Winning for the Cubs could mean a number of things. On the negative, it could piss off Zambrano and make negotiations more acrimonious. On the other hand, having to pay Zambrano only 11 million would allow the Cubs a chance to bump up that amount when working out an extension which could help them in negotiations.
