  1. One hour to go.....tick tock, tick tock, tick tock.
  2. Aren't the Cubs also being greedy with their best player? Depends on how you view greedy. They may be willing to settle at 13 million which is what Oswalt is making and more than what Carpenter is making. Is that really being greedy?
  3. And it's not just Zambrano and Lilly. Maddux was making 9m to be a 4th starter. Wood made 12m last year. As far as the arbitration process goes, comparing Zambrano to those is comparing apples to oranges. Lilly negotiated his deal on the open market. Zambrano is a sixth year arbitration player. The system doesn't allow for him to negotiate on the open market. Wood signed that deal as part of an extension. He wasn't a sixth year player at the time either. Compare Zambrano's deal to Oswalt who were in the same realm as far as players and you'll see why 13 million is about the right figure. 13 million is below the midpoint, so the Cubs appear to be on firm footing here.
  4. I agree that unless he's just bad defensively, Soriano will be in CF. That allows a Jones platoon with DeRosa.
  5. Bruce, do you think this is going to have a big negative effect on getting a long-term deal done? Jim is going to have to say alot of negative things to Zambranos face in the process, and with a emotional guy like Carlos, it looks like getting a long term deal will be very difficult. I'm not Bruce, but I don't think they Cubs have to say a lot of negative things. Comparing Zambrano to Oswalt is not negative. The Cubs could go in and present a case that Zambrano and Oswalt are extremely similar in experience and success and then present the Oswalt contract along with the Carpenter contract as evidence that their offer to Zambrano is fair.
  6. How ironic. 7m a year for the next 3 years for a pitcher with an over 6.00 ERA is not considered too much, but 13.5/13.75m for a GOOD pitcher, a true #1 starter is too high. Good luck getting Zito money from Hendry, Carlos. He seems to think 15m is too high, so there isn't any possible way he gives out 18m for the same guy. At least Hendry pretended like he wanted to get a deal done. Now I'm pissed again. Hendry understands the process. While I want Zambrano signed, I can see the logic here. Hendry likely sees the Oswalt deal as comparable to what Zambrano should recieve. He may be willing to go a little higher, but his leverage is in winning this hearing. If Zambrano loses and is only making 11 million this year, then they can use the extra million in this year to sweeten a possible extension. If they lose, which based on the way these hearings go I don't think they will, they will have to offer much more in the extension. If they gave in to the mid-point and signed Zambrano to a one-year 13.5 million deal, then they would have to begin the escalation on the extension there. While I'm certain Hendry is working to keep Zambrano, he certainly has to be smart with the dollars here.
  7. Frankly, I don't blame the Cubs. Looking at how this process works, the Cubs will win this hearing.
  8. Can we now leave Ramirez alone and go back to hating Marquis and Izturis? Please!?!?!
  9. Correct. The mid point is 13.3 (roughly). If the arbiter thinks Z should make less than the mid point, then Zambrano gets a one-year deal of 11.025. If he thinks he should make more than the mid point, he gets the 15.5. While Oswalt signed a 5/73 contract, the break down of those dollars are 13, 13, 14, 15, and 16. The total contract is not taken into account in drawing comparisons, only what he's making in the first year of it. So, it is likely that the arbiter will rule that Z should make below the midpoint and rule in favor of the Cubs. In fact, I think Zambrano over-reached on his amount making it very likely that the Cubs will win this. Winning for the Cubs could mean a number of things. On the negative, it could piss off Zambrano and make negotiations more acrimonious. On the other hand, having to pay Zambrano only 11 million would allow the Cubs a chance to bump up that amount when working out an extension which could help them in negotiations.
  10. The Cubs actually have a good chance of winning the hearing. The arbiter looks at the mid point and decides if the player should be paid one dollar more or one dollar less than the mid-point. Zambrano's mid point between his offer and the Cubs is still higher than Oswalt will make in the first year of his new deal. Arbitration is all about what comparable players make, and the Cubs may have a case that Zambrano and Oswalt are very comparable. If that's the case, the arbiter could easily rule in the Cubs favor.
  11. same reason prior will be gone when his contract is up. I think a great season this year by Prior could keep him a Cub with an extension. With Wood, even if he has a great season, there will be doubts about him being a healthy starter.
  12. Unless Wood ends up in the closer's role, my feeling is this will be his last season in Chicago. I don't see the Cubs spending the money to keep him in the pen or taking the chance with him as a starter with the other contract obligations they will have in 2008 and beyond.
  13. Still ticking....only about 3 hours left to get something done.
  14. I don't believe so. I think you can spread out the payments over 3 or 4 months, and maybe more. But it's pretty much an all or nothing service. You can sign up later in the season, but it won't be half the cost or anything. Goony is right you can spread it over three-four months, but not monthly. On the other hand, for DirectTV users or those thinking of switching, if you sign up for Sunday Ticket 2007 now, you can get a pretty good rate and have it spread out over 12 months of billing.
  15. I just wanted to bump this. Confirmed. Me for 9 tickets. Fred for 2 tickets. hardocorecubsfan for 2 tickets. Abe for four tickets. I still have five tickets available in the club seats. I also have four seats available in 214. These aren't club seats and their price is $20. For those of you who have confirmed, please try to get me payment by March 1 as the CC bill has now arrived.
  16. Depends on what DeRosa does and how Patterson develops.
  17. I'm going to take a different view on this thread... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/vance_the_cubs_fan/armstrong.jpg THIS THREAD BLOWS!
  18. If he's just a day or two late, it's really no big deal. If the next few days pass and he's not here, then we have to worry. While teams set reporting dates, according to the CBA players have until March 1 to report.
  19. At the end of this round, we'll have six bench spots. That's more than lots of leagues. This should be the last round.
  20. For the most part, spring stats are meaningless. I think there are times when it is necessary to look at what a player does in the spring, but basing line-up and roster decisions on spring training is not a good idea. The Cubs should have a good idea of what Murton can do. His spring AB's should be nearly meaningless. For Floyd, his spring AB should be used simply to judge whether injuries have taken their toll and whether he can still hit as he did prior to last season. Any decisions involving Floyd or Murton should be based on what they have done in recent seasons and not this spring. A few things ST can be good for: 1. Deciding a spot between two relatively similar players. 2. Judging whether a player has recovered from injury: see Prior/Miller 3. Deciding whether a player can handle a new position: see Soriano, Theriot, Jones. Deciding the better hitter between Floyd and Murton should have already occurred. Spring performance shouldn't matter in the least.
  21. Everyone is now added up to date
