  1. Furthermore, it's not like the vote is representative anyway. They claim 449 votes. Monroe has a population near 75K. That doesn't include surrounding areas. The votes for the Cubs may not have been from Cub fans, but they were from Monroe residents who had no problem voting for the Cubs. I took advantage of the large segment of the population who are apathetic to whom the News-Star covers and convinced them to vote my way. They knew what they were doing. Either way, the votes weren't properly counted. That's just wrong. If you leave a vote wide open, be prepared to accept the consequences.
  2. Not much else. I made my post on their site. If I ever meet Nick, I may say something to him personally. I'm sure I'll run into him at some point. My guess is there won't be a vote next year.
  3. Oh I agree they didn't ever intend for it to go the way it went; though I don't think it was ever intended for kids to vote. In fact, last year they made a mention of my nephew's hand-written letter being from the "youngest voter." I know what their intentions were, though. The sports editor and chief writer are Astros fans. Geographically, we are closer to the Rangers. They wanted a reason to cover the Astros more indepth than other teams and started this vote three years ago. In the first year, the Astros won in a landslide. I didn't vote at all that year as I was busy with a new child and didn't learn of the vote at all until the last minute. Last year, I decided to seek help and the Cubs made a race of it. After seeing what happened this year, I'm not certain if we didn't win it last year. So, what started out for them as an excuse to shift coverage to a team they (meaning the writers) would prefer to cover they created a contest. They never envisioned someone like me would attempt to make them write about a team they don't care for and that's 900 miles away. However, if they didn't like the possibility, they shouldn't have put it to a vote.
  4. There was nothing fake about the letters. They were signed by real people who put real addresses on them. The emails may have been one thing, but these letters were signed by real people who live right here in Monroe. Were the letters all the same other than the names? Yes. But that doesn't violate anything. At the bottom of the letters, the people hand signed them and printed their address. Some even added their age. There was nothing in the publicity that said votes had to be hand-written or anything. So, there was no cheating and nothing was dubious about them. It's simple. They didn't want a real contest and apparently decided to cheat when they got one. Furthermore, while they may not have liked people outside the area voting, there was no "rules" published as to who was eligible.
  5. 15 teams claimed thus far. Keep it up; we'll be ready to draft in no time.
  6. Clark isn't anything great, but Dessens sucks. It's kind of hard to declare a winner here.

  8. Since this is his age 27 season, it wouldn't surprise me to see him reach career highs. He'll be entering his prime. so after his OPS trend of 957/927/855 the past three years, you feel pretty good about him putting up a 1040 OPS this year. yep.

  10. 285/425/615 Dunn! Dunn! Dunn! Dunn! Dunn!
  11. Updated again. Right now, I'd rather not double up. If it looks like we can't fill all the spots, I might consider it. I'm fairly certain we won't have trouble filling the spots, though.
  12. Don't expect one. I've learned from other experiences, that the paper does as it pleases and doesn't think it must answer to anyone. I think that is a result of being the only newspaper in town. On all fronts, that paper has an agenda. The only people they answer to are the big bosses at Gannet.
  13. If Perez isn't realeased, he'll probably be the SS for Iowa.

  15. I thought it would be cool if we had an NSBB mock NFL draft. There are a lot of fans of different teams that are quite knowledgeable. Anyway, here's what I propose. We'll do three rounds. That should be enough to get a decent picture of how things shake out. First come, first serve on picking the team you want to pick for. If the team, you want is chosen, you can pick another team if you think you know enough about their needs and wants to make an informed pick. No trades. While we know some of those will happen on draft day, we'll keep all picks in the order they are now. Also, when you make the pick, please include a short explanation of the pick and why the pick is the right one for your team. You can request teams here or via pm. In this post, I keep up with who has claimed which team. Once all 32 teams are spoken for, we'll begin. I'll create a place-holder for the draft results as we draft. BTW, I'm claiming the Cowboys. 18. i'm sure that that darn neuxbie vance didn't know that, or else i'm sure he would have felt compelled to put it there. Though this came from the FJM site, it isn't Morgan related. Therefore, I gave it its own thread. I start threads as I please. i was going to say that the thread is pretty pertinent to issues we've been talking about all offseason. and i'll take any opportunity i can to take a shot at juan pierre, who isn't good at anything yet is getting paid like he's good at everything. Yes. I figured it'd get lost in the Joe Morgan thread. I felt it deserved it's own.

  20. It's going to be Burgess everyone!
  21. And close examination of that quote seems to reveal that Z wasn't speaking in particulars.
  22. Barmes would be an interesting acquisition, but I think Marmol is a little too much to pay. If Cedeno is still playing well, I'd just as soon use him as the utility infielder.
