  1. With 90th pick of the draft, Around the Joe Horn selects Matt Hasselback, QB. With the 91st pick of the draft, Around the Joe Horn selects Mike Anderson, RB.
  2. Does anyone have a link to the article where the quote was spoken?
  3. Murton still leading, as he should be.
  4. I'm not saying I disagree, but I don't think the Cubs see it as fixing the SS problem as much as they see it targeting a lead-off hitter. That, in itself, could be erroneneous thinking, but that's what I think is happening here.
  5. Here's what rotoworld had to say about Giles:
  6. I have no qualms going after Furcal as long as the resources are there to fill other needs. We definitely will also need to add one major bat in the outfield and fill the closer spot, whether that's with Ryan, Wagner, or keeping Dempster. I'd like to see Hendry attempt to address this issue early on and then make some aggressive trades to help us in other areas. We're going to be facing a rule V crunch, and a number of those players could be packaged to bring in a major league outfielder.
  7. We've picked it up somewhat, ending with three picks on 8/27 and then getting 6 selections made yesterday. If we can get six selections made today, it will really start to move.
  8. Those are some great pictures.
  9. Let's not practice revisionist history. Maddux joined the Braves because the Cubs pulled their offer from the table. Himes offered what he believed was fair. Maddux wanted to test the market. Himes spent the money allocated for Maddux on a bunch of crap. Maddux called after finding the Yankees were the only ones willing to beat the Cubs offer. Himes said that the offer is off the table. Maddux signed with the Braves. Maddux will now say it worked out for him, but had Himes went to the Trib and gotten permission to keep him, he'd have signed. Maddux's decision to go to the Braves was business pure and simple. No where did it have anything to do with a mythical "chance to win it all."
  10. The day after she loses her game thread virginity, she's late. That's not a good sign. Nonetheless, Go Cubs!
  11. I was thinking the same thing, but I would rather have Giles than Huff. I know Huff is younger, but Giles OBP is hard to pass up. Now if we can go a few million over $100... Ignore Zito, bring in Huff. Starting OF at Huff, Murton, Giles. I say this every time I talk about Huff, but he is on the verge on exploding and getting out of Tampa to Chicago will do the trick. This saves 2.5 million. This part is a stretch. Convince Nomar to make the switch to 2nd base, pick up Walker's contract and trade him or just let him walk. I really believe he is going to consider a position change this offseason, and I do believe he wants to stay a Cub. He opened up to taking over 3rd base pretty fast. The 2.5 million saved in not taking Zito goes to Nomar with $5 million + incentives. Walker makes 2.5 million so this balances out. Scary good Lineup: Furcal Nomar Lee Aram Giles Huff Barrett Murton Hill, Pinto, and even Guzman battle out for the #5 spot. One of these will probably be gone for Huff. Giles isn't a spring chicken anymore. Putting him in cf is a good way to get him hurt. Furthermore, if our OF is Murton, Giles, Huff from L to R, we'll easily have the worst OF defense in the majors.
  12. I just figured Sulley had gotten a new name. :-k
  13. Nomar turned down a deal to play 2b with the Dodgers last year. I still think he'll believe he would make more as someone's shortstop than to settle for playing second for the Cubs.
  14. It is what it is. 04/04 - 08/28 AB R H 2B 3B HR TB RBI BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS Barrett 350 40 101 27 3 12 170 53 33 48 0.289 0.354 0.486 0.840 Blanco 120 10 28 5 0 4 45 17 8 17 0.233 0.277 0.375 0.652 I'm as happy about Blanco's hot streak over the last 6 weeks as you are, but do you really think those 44 AB's have a better predictive value than the numbers shown above ?? Fred, we really shouldn't let facts get in the way of a good argument when uninformed opinions work just fine.
  15. Would you like to show quotes or links to support that these pitchers prefer Blanco? Once again, you've turned to baseless speculation. It's the tell-tale sign of a weak argument from a weak mind. Furthermore, what Barrett lacks in defense, Blanco more than lacks in offense. When you're team has a problem scoring runs as this one does, it makes much more sense to hold on to all the offense you can. And no....I guess I don't watch many Cub games...just probably a hell of a lot more than you. I just don't like to presume things about players. I'm glad you're such a great reader of body language, because your baseball acumen is pitiful. I can read just fine thank-you. It's one of the many skills I likely do better than you. I'm glad you have an erroneous opinion about Barrett. I'm sure it's not the only one you have. Blanco actually has a (sure limited ab's) higher BA after All Star than Barrett. Blanco has been 1 of the best catchers in the entire league, after the All Star break. Don't knock Blanco when trying to defend Barrett. Barrett 2005: 289/353/497 Career: 264/321/420 Blanco 2005: 233/277/375 Career: 218/287/357 I like Blanco as a back-up. He brings the right skills for a catcher who is going to start once, maybe twice a week. But don't make the mistake of thinking he even compares to Barrett. It's not even close.
  16. Guess I'm part of the "unintelligent observer" group. Also, the market must be pretty stupid to give Sori $7.5 mil and Walk $2.5 mil. Either that or Walker has the worse agent in baseball history. The numbers are there. Please show me by what metric other than salary that Soriano is the better player.
  17. It's about time Biggio was called on that crap. He's been leaning into pitches for years.
  18. Roger Dorn defintely has a case for the Hall. Especially if Arli$$ can get him a $weet deal.

  20. i think theres a chance that might have something to do with who pitches when those guys catch. I agree. I'm glad the pitchers gave you this insightful piece of information. I love it when people make stuff up to try to support their stance.
  21. we should get some of those intelligent observer folks to come and run the cubs. agreed
  22. As part of the trade, Sosa agreed to waive the clause guaranteeing his option.
  23. Soriano: 281/319/532 Walker: 303/354/468 Is Soriano really an upgrade, especially when he'll cost 4-6 million more? Also, Soriano's road splits for 2005: 237/274/401 I'd worry that he doesn't benefit greatly from the nice dimensions of Ameriquest Field. While Walker does have better home numbers than road, his road splits are still: 284/339/475 I can't fathom why any intelligent observer of baseball would want Soriano over Walker.
  24. Yes and finish 20 under .500 and watch Furcal, Giles and Wagner go elsewhere. You really think September is going to make or break a FA's decision on the quality of the franchise? The Cubs are in a big city, big market, with good talent, and recent success. It may not matter to Furcal. He's young and has been to the playoffs multiple times. Most likely it will be about the money for him. Now Giles is probably a different story. Finish nowhere close to .500 and Giles becomes less likely. I totally disagree. Most FA are smart enough to realize that what happens is September is pretty much irrelevant once a club is out of contention. Also, most FA have a large enough ego to think they can make a difference anyway.
