  1. He moves back there when Pierre leaves as a FA.
  2. I personally think that's too redundant. Not enough power and too many slap hitters. I think Lee, Ramirez and Wilkerson give you some power in the middle. All of those are capable of 30+ HRs. Barrett also brings some punch in the 8th spot. I also think each of those hitters are capable of a 350+ OBP, so there's not a lot of outs in that line-up. While I'd like more power as well, I think that team would score a fair share of runs. It would also be a pretty good defensive team as well, especially in the middle infield.
  3. I don't trade Pie for Pierre, more because Pierre is a FA after this season. You'd trade your long term solution for a very short-term fix. That being said, if the Marlins were willing to trade Pierre and Castillo for Pie and Walker, I might bite on that deal. While we would lose some power, we'd have a whole lot of speed throughout the line-up if we also signed Furcal. Also our middle infield defense would be spectacular. If we had Furcal and Castillo, both locked up for more than two years, we could use Cedeno in a package for a rightfielder. Would the Nationals bite on a package that was Cedeno, Williams, and Wellemeyer for Wilkerson? Imagine this line-up: CF Pierre SS Furcal 1b Lee 3b Ramirez RF Wilkerson 2b Castillo lf Murton C Barrett
  4. I thought you might, but I felt like I would clarify just in case.
  5. That's not completely true. You just lose the right to sign them to a contract until May 1, which usually means you waive good-bye to them. There have been cases where a player signs a minor league deal and then returns to the team on or after May 1. This happened with Jeff Russell and the Texas Rangers back in the mid-1990's.
  6. I should have prefaced my "last I heard" by saying I don't hear much. This is from June when the injury first happened. ESPN Story I don't have a link, but there was a recent report that said that Dotel would be ready for ST. The link in the thread on Dotel. I'm sure they thread has been bumped to the second or third page by now.
  7. I can't believe you left off Otis Nixon! A little visuals to support my contention that Nixon is indeed the ugliest baseball player. http://www.couchmaster.ca/images/bion/otisnixon.jpg http://imagehost.epier.com/88227/itempics/item_86%20topps%20otis%20nixon.jpg http://www.cantstopthebleeding.com/C1882343933/E409373380/Media/nixon.gif
  8. Last I heard, Dotel would be out pretty much all of this season. Have you heard otherwise? You have a link for that? Last reports that I linked in the Dotel thread is that he'll be ready by spring training.
  9. And why would Oakland take that? I'm pretty sure they get a much better offer from another team.
  10. I doubt we have the players to join the Zito sweepstakes, but think along these lines: Hill + Harvey + Gallagher
  11. How much Mench would help depends greatly on the rest of the make-up of the team. I don't think he makes a horrible fifth hitter and he looks very good in the sixth spot. Assume we have Furcal and Pierre for 1 & 2, Lee and Ramirez for 3 &4. If Murton, Barrett, and Cedeno make out the rest of the line-up...Mench may be a little weak for a five, but Barrett and Murton are likely better than a lot of 7 hitters. Cedeno is still a question mark in the eight spot.
  12. I wouldn't be surprised if Mackowiak is non-tendered. Unless the Pirates make him a full-time starter, he's going to get 2.5-3 million in arbitration and that will be a lot for a utility player on a team like the Pirates. That being said, I'd love to have Mackowiak for the bench.
  13. Perhaps the Perez negotiations were a way for the Cubs and Furcal's agent to discuss financials on Furcal without breaking the rules. Hendry: "We think Neifi is worth 1 million." Kinzer: "If Furcal is worth 4/50 surely Perez is worth more than that." Hendry: "Who says Furcal is worth 4/41?" Kinzer: "Well, I'd think it will take at least 4/39." Hendry: "Yes, I think he's worth 4/39." Kinzer: "Sounds good to us. Now, back to Perez."
  14. From the Stats Inc Scouting report on Mench: He's a decent fielder. He's not gold glove, but he has a strong and accurate arm. He definitely doesn't "suck" as a fielder. His hitting stats aren't great, but they aren't poor either. He has a good deal of power. He's 27 years old, so he's just entering his prime. Your comparisons to Burntiz are a little out of whack as well. In 2005, Mench put up a 272/334/484 line. In 2005, Burntiz hit 258/322/435. Mench was better across the board. Maybe he compares somewhat to Burnitz at the same age, as at age 27 Burnitz hit 265/377/470 and those are certainly more comparable to Mench. So if they're comparable at the same age, maybe Mench can replicate Burnitz's 281/382/533 season at age 28 as well. The two are somewhat comparable players, but only if you compare them at similar ages. I wouldn't be surprised to see them follow similar career paths which would mean now is the time to grab Mench as he's about to experience his best 3-4 seasons. Comparing a 27 yr old Mench to the production of a 36 yr old Burntiz isn't a valid comparison.
  15. No way is he near enough an impact bat for RF. Career line: .269/.350/.426/.776 Sorry, but these numbers are worse than Burnitz career, and equal to Burnitz last year with a dozen more walks. Vance did make the disclaimer that he would have to return to his .900 OPS form. I understand that, but part of this issue with going through this style of discussion if the unpredictability factor of "form". Last year Hendry could have easily argued, "We expect Hollandsworth and Burnitz to return to their respective career year forms". That would not have been acceptable for 90% of the fans around here. Granted Bradley is younger and more likely to return, but it is still an unknown. Do you see what I'm getting at? I really think RF and SS are the two offseason spots that Hendry will target known quantities, as close to predicatble professional growth/decline as you can get. He may gamble on 2B and LF with "what ifs", but probably not RF and SS. Would I acquire Bradley with the goal of sticking him in right? No. On the other hand, I'd get Bradley knowing I could move him to right and go another direction in CF if I couldn't find a better option for RF. Bradley is 27 yrs old, I think his last three years is a better indicator of what he'll do than his career line.
  16. I doubt Dunn or Abreu could be had with a bunch of quantity. Those teams are going to want quality over quantity to move those guys.
  17. Have you ever watched him play the outfield or are you just offering an uninformed opinion? What's with the hostility today? No hostility. I'd just like some factual basis for his comments. Mench is no speed demon, but he hardly sucks in the outfield. I was just wondering if his fielding comments were based on anything valid, or just a blanket comment about a player he knows nothing about.
  18. Have you ever watched him play the outfield or are you just offering an uninformed opinion?
  19. At least if he signs Furcal, he'll know what kind of money he has left for SP, CF, and RF. If Furcal stalls, he may return to Nomar as an option.
  20. I agree. I definitely think Hendry will try to pursue other options. I just think Bradley would be a perfect target and would make the perfect project to test Dusty's abilities as someone who can manage a clubhouse.
  21. I can see this happening. Hendry always moves quickly on his prime targets. (See: Remlinger, Mike; Hawkins, LaTroy). Also, the Mets are busy right now trying to decide on a closer and a clean-up hitter. Furcal is likely number three on their list of priorities. Hendry likely wants to lock Furcal up quickly so he can focus on other issues as well as know he's free to move Walker to another team. Hendry likely will make Furcal a nice offer and tell him he needs a quick answer or he'll move on to other concerns. I bet we could be seeing a signing of Furcal by Monday afternoon.
  22. I'd jump all over it. First of all, Bradley can play CF which is a position of need. He's also capable of playing RF if you are unable to upgrade there. He's only 27 years old. Last season, he hit 290/350/484. From 2002-2004, he hit 290/379/463. Since 2002, he's been very, very good and has a season with an OPS of 900+. I know that he carries with him a lot of baggage, but with the weak free agent crop and the need for the Cubs to have productive players in the outfield, I wouldn't hesitate to make a quick offer for him. If the Cubs still want to pursue Pierre, they can move Bradley to right.
  23. that's all the marlins get for delgado? You're right...but I'd think it would need to be the Rangers adding a little more to the package.
