The NBA resonates more with young black athletes than MLB because it is more relatable to black youth who see the league as an extension of their own cultural identity. They have successfully positioned themselves at the intersection of sports and hip hop culture. Hence why black kids want the newest pair of LeBrons and why more of them are playing NBA 2k than MLB the Show. As JBears mentioned, baseball programs having access to NIL money will make a difference, albeit a small one, but it is unlikely that MLB comes close to the number of black players of the 1980s ever again. The NBA, and to a lesser extent the NFL, passed them up decades ago.- 16 replies

A lot of people are going to look back on Jed’s time with a different perspective when he leaves and things for the Cubs stay the same.

Jed has all but come right out and said “I can’t do my job because of this cheapskate owner.” The Tucker trade is feeling more and more like an audition for a guy who knows he’s walking and wants to tell his suitors “look how creative I had to be with the constraints that were put on me.”

I recall an interview Dani Probert did after Bob’s passing where she mentioned that he could recall specific moments from his playing career 20 years back, but would forget what he had for breakfast by lunch time. It makes me sad to see the alumni gather and Bob not be here to be a part of it.

One thing to consider with respect to these discussions of eras are the advancements in equipment and medicine. Specific to football, pads are smaller now and allow for greater flexibility than even just 20 years ago. Likewise, a player can return from an ACL tear to his previous form where in previous eras it was potentially career ending. You also have to take into account the natural evolution of the game. Nobody in the 70s was considering that we'd have mobile QBs like Mahomes, Allen, or Jackson one day. Wait another couple of decades and we will be watching something that right now we can't imagine seeing, but it will be considered the standard of the game in the future.

I would never debate the merits of either of them. It just becomes difficult to live in the present and enjoy their careers when we are constantly bombarded with debates over their place in history. Nothing can happen organically anymore. If the HR race of ‘98 happened today we would be constantly listening to debates about whether McGwire and Sosa are the greatest HR hitters in history rather than just enjoying the race for what it was.
