  1. I like Kirk too, he knows his stuff. Seems like the only people that don't like Kirk are OSU fans who don't like that he isn't a homer. Indeed. Herbie is a first class talent. He use to get harrassed all the time by the local knuckleheads in Columbus when I lived there. I think if he wasn't an OSU alum the radio station would have fired him a long time ago. They fired his co-host in 1999 for giving "it" to one of the callers/listeners and then going off on a 5 minute tirade on what idiots/uninformed most of the listening audience was. Then shortly afterwords they hired Neanderthal Chris Speilman to do the show right before Herbie's. And its all Buckeyes all the time. Really? I knew OSU fans got upset sometimes because he isn't a blind homer, but I still would have thought he was somewhat of a hero out there. The deal about his co-host sounds pretty good though, I wish I could hear it. So many of the people who call into sports talk radio are just clueless.
  2. Kirk Herbstreit said on his radio show yesterday that the environment in Austin for the Texas/OSU game was "a wine and cheese party compared to the atmosphere they will face in Kinnick Saturday." He then maintained his stance that Kinnick is the toughest place to play in the Big Ten outside of the years when we were struggling. Even outside the fact that he always gives Iowa a lot of respect, I've said for a few years that he's as good as it gets as a sports analyst on tv. Always very knowledgable, always speaks well, doesn't need to shout or use gimmicks, and isn't a homer.
  3. You could say the same thing about the Vikings. Both defenses buckled down in the red zone and I think both offenses got a little conservative. No, you can't. Umm, why not? Neither team executed in the red zone offensively. Both teams made big plays defensively in the red zone. Both coaches played it very close to the vest in the red zone. I think the Vikings are a good team. I said early in this thread they are a possible playoff team. That said, the Bears defense has been doing this on a weekly basis for over a year now. Until the Vikings have the same level of red zone success over a long period of time, they will not (and should not) get that same respect. I completely understand that, but this is the third straight week they've done that. We don't have the track record yet, but that's what our defense has done in three games. Brunnell, Delhomme and Grossman aren't elite, but they are solid quarterbacks. Tomlin has found a way to keep them out of their rhythm and stifle them in the red zone.

  5. Everything else is irrelevant this week. Seriously though there isn't much else this week. Georgia Tech/Va Tech could be a good matchup as could the two SEC games you have under the "good" category." Other than that the two Big 12 North games are probably the most interesting.

  7. I won't concede any more to them. They didn't "neutralize" our defensive front...they managed less than 100 yards on the ground, less than 200 in the air, and only put up 3 FGs. They did a decent job keeping us off of the QB, that was about it. Considering they gave Johnson as good of protection as they could conceivably expect, it didn't boost the offense at all. We knew our weakspot was our offensive line, you did do a good job exploiting that, I'll give credit there. That was a close one on the road, I'm predicting a lopsided contest in Chicago next time. I disagree. Our o-line is still coming together and the right side is a work in progress. I think it will get better and the running game will develop. We did neutralize your defensive front to the extent that you weren't in our backfield much at all. I really don't think this team will be blown out at much at all this year and not against the Bears. Our defense is good enough to keep us from getting blown out and we won't turn the ball over much. That will keep us in most games and we showed that we can rattle Rex.
  8. Exactly. If Sharper catches that ball right in his hands (which he ALWAYS does) it's a pick 6 and a different game. E.J. dropped an interception in his hands. I thought Childress and his staff outcoached Lovie today, which makes it the third straight game. When you're talking about Fox, Gibbs and Lovie Smith that's an accomplishment. You guys of all fans (after Wanny and Jauron) should understand what it's like to go from ineptitude to good coaching. Not to put Childress at the top of the league, but it's just comforting and fun to watch. The only call I really questioned today was the fly to Williamson on 4th and 2 at the end of the game. Losing that game sucks and it hurts our chances in the division. But big picture I'm satisfied with the start. It's just nice to know that when you need a stop you can actually hope for it with some realism and you won't be outcoached every game. We just need to get that red zone offense taken care of, much like the Bears.
  9. Don't worry about it, I know how it is. I know why most Bears and fans around the league don't take us very seriously. The thing is, this team is well coached, won't kill themselves and plays solid defense. We haven't seen any of those three things from the Vikings in years. It's a totally different team. Our defense and limiting turnovers on offense will keep us in most every game. At the same time unless our offense can score touchdowns when they get in the red zone, it will be tough to overtake the Bears. I think we did show that the Bears offense isn't as good as some thought and Rex can be rattled or confused with pressure. Like I said before the season I would have been more than satisfied with a 2-1 start. We have the Bills and Lions heading into the bye, then come out with Seattle and New England. After those 4 games we'll know how good the Vikes can be.
  10. Well that sucked. I think all of you Bears fans should realize that the Vikings really aren't much of an inferior team. We neutralized your defensive front pretty well, rattled Grossman a little bit and broke off some runs with a decent passing game. We don't do anything great, but do everything pretty well. Our defense is better than most expect or give us credit for, simply because the Vikings haven't had a defense in so long. I know some of you will say otherwise, but it wasn't that the Bears played that poorly, we just played pretty well. The division will be more of a dogfight than most of you may think. This is a Vikings team that is well coached and doesn't kill itself. Oh and we can actually keep teams out of the end zone every once in a while. I'm satisfied to come out of this stretch 2-1 and prove that we're a pretty solid team that can go toe to toe with the Bears. That fumbled handoff was the game. I can't believe it.
  11. Um, 15-18 for 142 and no turnovers compared to 10-20 for 132 and a pick. You're right he's not outplaying him at all. If anything NEITHER quarterback has done anything big to have it called outplaying each other. I'll give ya Grossman is throwing some stupid passes. But to say Johnson is clearly outplaying Grossman isn't exactly true. That's just ridiculous. How much more efficient can you be than 15-18 for 142, no turnovers and no sacks. That's on pace to go 30-36 for 300 yards. Seriously, get real man. If you can't look at that half and those numbers and not acknowledge that, you are incapable of being objective.
  12. Um, 15-18 for 142 and no turnovers compared to 10-20 for 132 and a pick. You're right he's not outplaying him at all.
  13. Seriously that's just pathetic. There's nothing worse than a group of fans saying "oh we have to play them and the refs, they're handing the game to the Vikings." It's not like they've been total game-changing calls and we had a questionable call that took points off the board too. If you were outplaying us and getting a bunch of awful calls it would be different. You got outplayed in the first half, admit it. We'll see how the second half goes.
  14. What game are you watching? Bears vs. Vikings/Refs Oh please. The horse collar tackle was a bad call, I'll give you that. But what about that weak holding penalty they called on Maurice Mann when Chester had a 9 yard gain on the screen? It was a total no-call (just like the horse collar) but killed the Vikings drive. The off-sides call on Brown was tough to tell, but he got off the ball so damn quick I can see why they threw the flag. I should have known that if the game was like this you guys would only be complaining about the officials and talking about how you played as bad as possible. Typical Bears stuff. I guess we're seeing that Rex might not be where everyone thought he was yet. Play a decent defense and have to deal with a little pressure and you've seen what he's done. He should have given up a pick-6 to Sharper too. We'll see how he adjusts. Brad is outplaying him right now.
  15. I'm sure that will pretty much be the national consensus (everyone outside of OSU fans) which is very cool. Yeah this will be the third time in four weeks they'll be at OSU's game, but really they haven't had much choice. They had to be at the Texas game and Iowa-OSU is the only matchup of ranked teams next weekend and the clear game of the week, plus Herbstreit will be there. I was surprised they were at Columbus today, but I guess the next best options were Notre Dame or Cal and Arizona State.
  16. Being at Gameday is so much fun...I was there for the ND-USC game last year and it was an incredible atmosphere, even for ND. I hope you have a good time and I'll be rooting for the Hawkeyes (obviously). Yeah Gameday will be fun to be at, but the game will be even better. This is probably the biggest or at least most hyped game in Kinnick since '85 (#1 vs. #2 Michigan). It's always loud and a big homefield advantage, but it's just taken up a notch under the lights. There haven't been too many, but the ones we've had have been nuts. This is just huge exposure for recruits and the entire country and will be even bigger if we win. We probably haven't had a national spotlight game like this since the '02 Orange Bowl. Bob Davie loves Iowa and Ferentz and Herbstreit usually toots our horn quite a bit. He still says that when Iowa is winning, Kinnick is the toughest place to play in the Big Ten. Those two will even out some of Musburger's love of OSU and disdain for Iowa. I'll try to keep posts like these to a minimum over the next week so everyone doesn't get sick of hearing about Iowa.
  17. Oh and Gameday is officially coming to Iowa City next Saturday. The primetime, national game at 7:00 on ABC next Saturday. I cannot freaking wait to be there. Kinnick will be beyond crazy.
  18. That was painful to watch. If MSU had won that game Iowa would have been Big Ten champs by themselves and gone to the Rose Bowl. I know why Howard doesn't like them, it just seemed a little crazy. When they give you this much air time because Herbstreit's gone, you should probably act a little bit professional. CubColtPacer if they're even a top 20 team there isn't a game they can lose before USC. Their only actual road game is at Air Force. Their toughest overall game is a toss-up between bad Purdue and UCLA teams. By the way I have to nominate the MSU kick returner's kneel down at his own 12 as one of the strangest/dumbest plays I've seen.
  19. The same guy who said "hello mediocrity" an hour ago? Hmmm.
  20. Typical Michigan State, typical John L. Smith. Only they could blow a game where they're up 37-21, 10 minutes to go and first and 10 at ND's 30. Stupid penalties, stupid turnovers, stupid coaching, stupid decisions. Oh and I rescind what I said about Drew Stanton before the game. What a terrible display. The worst part about it is that we're going to hear about what a fantastic Notre Dame comeback and the "Quinn for Heisman" chants. That game was absolutely handed to them on a platter. I can't wait to hear Holtz. I can't believe how incredibly weak their schedule is now. They shouldn't have a game within 14 points until they get to USC. 3 academies, a horrible Stanford team, a horrible North Carolina team, a bad Purdue team and a UCLA team that just lost to Washington. Wow. In related news, Desmond Howard (who is terrible) really hates Michigan State. He kept saying they were the only team in the country who could blow that game and when Fowler was talking about the MSU fans' reaction he said it was "priceless" with glee.
  21. I've doubted it since the offseason. There defense was not good last year and there was no indication it would be any better this year. Plus the fact that all coaches had a year's worth of film on Weis and had a better chance to gameplan against his offense. The personal foul penalty on Trannon was crap. Ryan Harris did far more and the coaches/managers/staff were pushing and grabbing his facemask. I really can't figure out how broadcasters can talk about how mentally tough and smart Quinn is. Against Georgia Tech, Michigan and now MSU he's looked horrible when they get pressure on him.
  22. Wow, looks like it's coming down in East Lansing. I love watching Stanton, and am very glad Iowa didn't have to play him last year or this year. Then again, John L. Smith is their head coach.
  23. So is Ohio State just unable to move the ball? The weather sounds like it's messing up their passing game, but I still would have thought they'd be able to run the ball a little more. I'm stuck with the Iowa State/Texas game.
  24. Carr is such a moron. Luckily for him Michigan has so much talent it normally doesn't matter. If Carrol, Weiss, or Tressel coached Michigan they'd never lose. I agree but that's a bit of an exaggeration. It's not like they have that much more talent than Ohio State. USC has just as much if not more talent. As far as the starting 22 go, I don't know that they have more talent than Notre Dame. Plus in college (football and basketball) just having a ton of talent isn't always the key. You need the right kind of kids and a compliment of quality role players.
  25. I just hope if the Bears lose tomorrow, you guys all come back here and aren't full of bad excuses. I love how Bears fans of all people are using that line that "they barely beat a couple of bad or decent teams." Okay, fair enough. But why was it different when the Bears did that last year? There was Detroit, Green Bay (twice), San Francisco, Baltimore, your loss to Cleveland. Yet at that point last year, when you guys were something like 8-9 games into the season and hadn't beaten anyone (when most of those were close games against bad teams) all I heard was "hey, finding a way to win is all that matters." Just be consistent.
