  1. "He blew his wad on that swing" - Joe Carter
  2. I personally don't ever want Blanco to play. Every time I hear his name, I hear Slim Whitman singing "Una Paloma Blanca" for some reason. Hey... I'm no music critic, but with these numbers I might just rethink my taste in music........... CUBS are 27-33 when Barrett catches, 13-8 when Blanco starts. Then who am I too judge? Sing on, Slim! "Una Paloma Blanca, I'm just a bird in the sky.........."
  3. Wasn't he the guy on "Sanford and Son?"
  4. Dave Kingman spent most of his youth out west, but went to high school in Mount Prospect.
  5. Don't ask me why, but it's actually David Jonathan.

  7. I dont really remember him putting up a fuss last year when he was moved down. If I remember correctly he actually told baker to move him down because he wanted to win. At least that was the origional story that came out. The whole HUGE EGO thing is a little overrated, IMO. Not saying he doesnt have an ego, just not the collosal one people beleive. Oh, and I agree with SCS, we need a spellcheck. I'm sure chocolate milk would agree also. That's what I'm waiting to see from the O's is if it was chicago who made sammy look like the monster ego or if he really has one. About being dropped in the order, he made a huge fuss for weeks before being dropped then when it was obvious he needed to be dropped it became his idea, then after the season he said he never wanted to be dropped and was insulted when baker did it..... As I recall, when asked about being dropped Sosa's reaction was that he should be batting third or fourth be cause he was the heart of the team (or a gladiator, or the "mang," or something like that). Which could mean, "How dare you suggest they drop me in the order, I'm SAMMY SOSA!" But it could also mean, "For this team to succeed, I need to be hitting like a third or fourth hitter as I have in the past." Sammy haters will assume the former, Sammy lovers will assume the latter. The rest of us really don't care about semantics; we're just sad that the greatest hitter in team history didn't get to leave the game gracefully in a Cub uniform.
  8. Actually, a change at the top of the batting order wouldn't hurt things either.
  9. I think it's a problem with the search feature. I get the same message if I try to go to a thread from the "View posts since last visit" page. If I go to a particualr forum and click on the same thread, I don't have any problem.
  10. If we're really talking about the best player, I'd give Alomar the nod. Two players couldn't be any more similar offensively than Biggio and Alomar, but Alomar's defense puts him firmly ahead. Not that I'd want him on my team, as I really don't like rooting for players that I dislike. But on the basis of the pure talent at the position over the course of his career, I can't help but give him his props. And Kent really doesn't belong in the discussion with those two. He's a better slugger than either of them, but that's all.
  11. If you don't count Roberto Alomar, that is.
  12. I think both guys are deserving of enshrinement based on modern HOF standards. However, they were/will be enshrined for totally different reasons, so the "Sandberg's in so Biggio should go in" argument really doesn't fly. Sandberg made it in because he was generally recognized as the best second baseman of his generation, and because he accomplished things offensively and defensively over the course of his career that hadn't been done by a second baseman before. If/when Biggio makes it, it will be because of his versatility, longevity (with one team, at that), consistancy, and overall numbers (primarily 3000 hits, assuming he makes it).
  13. That's great, now that I no longer get WGN.
  14. Yep, almost Biggio too. And considering Dawson played mostly corner OF and Biggio played mostly 2B, that doesn't say alot for Dawson Dawson played more games in CF than any other position.
  15. Is there another Tony Perez besides the one who was inducted in 2000?
  16. Problem for them is that they played in a very offensive era with lots of other guys who are just as good or better. It's possible that several of these players could split the vote and make it tough for any of them to get in.
  17. Details, please. :D Hermaphrodite, maybe? Although that would be better discribed as "both" than "other."
  18. I'd prefer that Lee, and all the Cubs for that matter, take a 3-day break to rest up for the second half than risk injury playing in an overhyped exhibition game.
  19. I was going to make a Fergie comment when I saw the title of this thread, but you beat me to it. Kudos for working the Garry Maddox reference into your post. Nicely done! This actually reminds me of my reaction when we traded George Bell for Sammy Sosa. I originally just heard that we had traded Bell for Sosa, and my reaction was, "Elias Sosa is still pitching?"
  20. I used to post regularly on the cubs.com board; but since there's so little decent baseball discussion over there any more, most of my recent comments on that forum have been smart-arse replies to really stupid posts. So I think I'll keep my alter-ego anonymous so that "newbie" posters to both boards won't judge me based on some of my posts over there. Veterans of that board have probably figured out who I am, anyway.
