  1. I don't know the reference. I'm not concerned with the self-righteousness of the language police.
  2. Honestly, thank you. I am not particularly well-versed enough in politics to be as articulate as you, but this is a deeply personal situation to me as I have very good friends in Venezuela and I know what they are going through. Thank you for speaking the truth on this.
  3. Words are not inherently disrespectful.
  4. I still have Guaranteed Rate Field PTSD from the 2010 Zambrano incident. So many bad memories attached to that place.
  5. Most wholesome moment of the Olympics goes to Tara Davis-Woodhall and her husband Hunter. They are couples goals.
  6. When you're tenured you get to call them "whippersnappers".
  7. I understand that language evolves, but too often the overly PC crowd want to attach a problem where one doesn't exist. I follow Haleigh Washington on Instagram. She refers to herself as a "Colorado kid". Is she infantilizing herself? Words are not inherently disrespectful.
  8. Good post. Regarding the "awkwardness" of my original post, consider it in the same way that fans might say "let's go boys" when our Cubs take the field and not "let's go men". The formal version sounds far more awkward.
  9. I cited Oxford for the description of the context that I used it in and then provided widely accepted examples of its use in daily speech. The counter argument made was "you're not a woman" from someone who also isn't a woman. Pick a different hill to die on and let's stop jamming up the Olympics thread.
  10. Dictionary definitions are meaningless when compared to personal feelings, got it. lol
  11. I provided a definition from Oxford dictionary and examples of its commonly accepted and appropriate use. The best counter argument presented was "you don't get to determine if it's offensive because you aren't a woman, but I do even though I'm also not a woman." We've derailed the Olympics thread enough with this silly debate. Big day at the track for the Americans!
  12. This reads like the title of an Onion article.
  13. Yes, and all of them are men. lol
  14. Are you a woman? If not, I'll defer to them to decide what they find disrespectful and offensive or not.
  15. The term "girls" isn't inherently derogative. In this context, it's just informal. It is perfectly acceptable when used in the appropriate context. Women use the term in the same way and far more often than men. Jordan Chiles has referred to herself as "that girl" at these Olympics. Other uses that come to mind include "cowgirl", "fan girl", "hot girl summer", "girl power". Used in it's correct context, as I did, it isn't trivializing or perpetuating anything.
  16. "Girls" in this instance is perfectly acceptable in its informal use. Per the Oxford definition, "women who mix socially or belong to a particular group, team, or profession." Ex., "I look forward to having lunch with the girls." We use "boys" in the same manner when talking informally about adult men. "I'm playing golf with the boys tomorrow."
  17. Yes, please listen. I have friends in Venezuela and what they are going through is horrific.
  18. Big semi-final match coming up for women's volleyball against Brazil. They've met in the gold medal match in each of the last three Olympics. American girls got the best of them in Tokyo. Our girls haven't been dominate this year, but they've been resilient.
  19. If PCA can learn to hit the ball the other way with regularity. 🤤
  20. Can we please end the guest 7th inning stretch conductor and just play the video of Harry every game?
  21. That was wild. Like grade school when the one kid in class throws up and everybody smells it and it sets off the chain reaction of vomiting.
  22. The women's 100m was the one event I was looking forward to most before the games began since Sha'Carri didn't get to participate in it last Olympics. The field was set to be loaded and then all three Jamaican girls who medaled in Tokyo pulled out one by one. Add to it that this was likely Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce's final Olympics and it's just a bummer. She has been one of my favorite Olympic athletes since I first watched her compete in 2008.
  23. Kristen Faulkner ended a 40-year American drought in the women's cycling road race. She made her move with about 3 km to go and just blew away from the lead group to take the gold.
  24. I was talking about the fact that in the span of a week we have people wanting to tank for a better pick and now are angry because they want to make the playoffs. We can't do both. lol
