OK, here's some background on the FSU situation: 1. The Seminole Indians are comprised mainly of two tribes, those in Florida and in Oklahoma. The Seminole Tribe of Oklahoma is the group that has constantly raised a stink over the whole issue of Native American mascots. They were the sect that fled (like chickens, a part of their history they ignore as much as possible), leaving behind the other sect to fight the "white men" back in the 1800's. The reason FSU adopted the Seminole Tribe as it's mascot was for the fact of their spirit and will to never give in. Coincidentally, this is the spirit TK is adopting in the fight against the NCAA. 2. If the NCAA has sooooo much to say about this issue, maybe they should take a little trip down to Tallahassee and drive around the city for a while. I'm sure they would see the streets (named by the local government over the past 100+ years), such as Micosukee Rd, Osceola Dr, Seminole Way, etc. and notice there aren't any protestors over the names of the streets, which people build houses on and use everyday. Maybe they can come through the panhandle, visiting towns such as Chattahoochee and Choctaw before coming to Tally. I'm sure they'll stay in the the suburb of Killearn Acres for the evening, as it's a nice country club - and I think there are some Irish living in the area. 3. Jeb has finally decided to support a cause that is worthwhile on this one, and it could be a serious tipping point. His stance is to uphold any use of a name/symbol/mascot should it be approved by the group. That would be interesting should FSU decide to take this to the courts and use what leverage they can against the NCAA. 4. Before football games (and only football games, because it would be inconvenient to protest other sports), there is always a group of 2-3 Native Americans protesting outside of Doak Campbell Stadium. While this is constantly covered, it is never noted that within 200 feet, there is a group of minimally 50-100 Seminole Indians tailgaiting and handing out information literature on the Seminole Tribe. 5. FSU has ponied up more than a few million (not sure of the exact total) since 1990 for academic scholarships for use at any State of Florida university for Native Americans. Not too shabby, but again, no mention of this ever gets out. 6. The Seminole Tribe of Oklahoma has "offered" to let go of the issue and support the use of the Seminole symbol, but only if FSU is willing to donate percentages of profits and set up scholarships specifically for the OK Seminoles - and only the OK Seminoles. Not too sure, but last I checked this amounted to extortion. 7. Brand is an absolute idiot, on a level similar to W. An Uncle of mine ran a portion of the Indiana University Education Department program, and said that nothing of value ever came from the man. He was politically motivated, and always made sure to put those who could help his causes before those of the students. His lack of focus on education was a reason he was so quick to accept the position at the NCAA, as he was rumored to be ousted at IU. 8. On a less serious note, any idea why this can be such a prickly issue, yet they can't figure out a decent way to have a college football playoff? You would think they would work on things like improving graduation rates, granting additional need-based scholarships, keeping athletes from missing as many days of class as they do, etc. before tackling an issue that really isn't thought of. 9. Also, as someone of Irish decent now living in Chicago, I will make sure that I do everything in my power to protest every Notre Lame event possible, as I'm offended by being lumped in with a group of militant countrymen. Yup, that's where I stand.
