  1. Say what you will, but they always find the postseason, and they'll probably win their division this year as well. Come to think of it, how many of the Yankees starters came up through their system? Jeter Wang Cano Cabrera Green Not to mention Posada and Williams. Interestingly enough, the "strong up the middle" idea is well developed by the Yanks. Posada, Cano, Jeter, and Williams (when he was in CF) was a pretty good defense - and all home grown. The sluggers came from outside the organization and were bought.
  2. After 98 years without a championship, and 30 years of my lifetime (22 watching them) without a championship, I want to see them BUILD a team and minor league system that is constantly competitive. It's taken this long to do it, why not do it right? Unfortunately, I'm beginning to lose faith in Hendry as having any ability to do this. The minor league system has started to decay after it looked so promising when he took over as GM. Hendry's time as GM is starting to eerily mirror that of MacPhail (with the abberation being 2003).
  3. Seems like a good candidate to shop to either Cincinnati or Washington. With their need for pitching, they might jump at the opportunity. Not too sure who could be had from these teams, but it would be a starting point nonetheless.
  4. It just goes to show how bad this team sucks. A 15-11 record is only a .577 winning percentage, which won't even help come close to the Wild Card. God, this team just SUCKS.
  5. Gregg Jeffries
  6. Cannavaro almost singlehandedly shut down the German offense. IMO he was easily the MVP of the game.
  7. I can see Florida State going undefeated this year, since their schedule is so weak. The biggest opposition will be against Miami, and the game on the road against NC State - two places where they always have trouble. Of course, I could also see a 4 loss season again.
  8. When you don't work as often as a closer is needing to be worked, you struggle. Ladies and gentlemen, we have our winner!
  9. Just think, the Cubs are only a game and a half in front of the Pirates. Two games (more or less, and just a half game in the loss column) worse than the D-Rays. And while it's a heck of a lot, the Cubs are only 8 games better than the worst team in baseball, the Royals. This could be an ugly end to the season, as I feel like we're going to challenge them soon for the worst record.
  10. I have no idea how the US will pull off a win on Thursday. Ghana has looked strong in both their games, and our boys will be EXHAUSTED after today's game. On the other hand, the US looked excellent when they were attacking in the first half. I've noticed something in watching the US over the past 16+ years, and it's that the defense consistently fails to mark inside the box. Even more maddening is the formula the US uses, constantly pushing the ball out wide, then trying to center rather than pushing up through the middle (like most of the world class teams). And Cannavalo sucks. What he sucks I'll leave up to you to decide.
  11. But that's the story of U.S. soccer - keep playing balls in the air into the middle when you're clearly outclassed. It's as frustrating as watching the Cubs not take walks.
  12. Of course Wood's shoulder is still sore. HE STILL HASN'T CHANGED HIS MECHANICS!
  13. cubs.com This is our chance to get a look at Aardsma!! You KNOW, he's looking at you!!! http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_430911.jpg Interesting, since you're the one who decides when they get pulled from the game, Dusty. I just don't understand how he can blame (seemingly) everyone except for himself for the problems that crop up with the team. It's amazing that no one else can share in the problems.
  14. I think we're finally seeing Jim Hendry take more of a "hands on" approach to the GM position. It's now going to work the way he sees fit, and he's going to stop enabling Dusty so much since Jim's job depends on how Dusty does on the field. Just an opinion, but my guess is that Dusty doesn't return next year unless he plays the kids and wins.
  15. A possible violation and he didn't even push the kid to his favorite team. That's [expletive] to investigate. There are many worse infractions that have come to light, including this nugget from a Texas A&M recruit: Here's the entire article.
  16. It's just a matter of him qualifying. That's why FSU cooled on him towards the end. If he gets in, he'll be a beast.
  17. Thought I would update some big info I've heard being passed around: Vidal Hazelton most likely is wavering in his commitment to USC, and will sign with Penn State. Should excite Truffle and Derwood. Percy Harvin is leaning more and more towards USC, probably to replace the departed Hazelton. UF also lost out on Damian Williams today (switched to Arkansas), and also formally pulled the 'ship from Damon McDaniel (who is looking more and more like he'll end up at FSU - very strange saga). Jai Eugene called Les Miles today and switched his commitment from Michigan to LSU. Should make Vance a happy camper. Alex Rose won't be switching his commitment from Auburn to FSU. Surprisingly, I'm not at all up or down on this news. Charles Deas is down to Auburn and FSU, but it looks like he won't have the grades. That's all I've been bombarded with today that I can remember, but hopefully there will be some happy people out there (and, some unhappy ones as well!).
  18. Another no-no from the recruiting trail: Texas A&M is working to bring in 5 star LB Michael Morgan, who was favoring Florida State. In order to sway him, they have been harping on the player who passed away during spring conditioning, DeVaughn Darling, to his parents in order to get him to stick in-state. What a crock. If Franchione doesn't have a program that's good enough to keep him on equal footing, and Texas doeesn't even want to consider him, this is pretty low level to stoop to.
  19. I didn't really watch the video, since I don't care too much about the scene it caused. What's really interesting, is that he supposedly re-confirmed his commitment to UM last weekend, and was seen at their basketball game wearing a UM jersey. It was also ALE who invited The Fridge and his wife to attend the ceremony, and never mentioned to them that the PSU coaches were anywhere nearby. Another tidbit that I've come across is that the whole thing was set up by Scot Van Pelt, a UM alum on ESPN. He's pretty P.O.'ed, since it wasn't going to be done unless he was attending UM (which is probably a recruiting violation itself). All in all, these kids need to learn that they haven't done anything yet and really aren't deserving of the attention that is given to them this early in their "careers."
  20. Don't worry about putting too much time or effort into wishing about Deas. Deas is either headed to Auburn or to FSU, probably by way of Hargrave Military Academy or JUCO, depending on what his next few SAT scores are, since he's around 100-150 points off (based on the new scale scoring), according to rumors.
  21. With their upgraded facilities, they should be a decent team in the MAC in no time.
  22. what was up with the clock not stopping on 1st downs in that game? I could be wrong, but I believe this is done in most of the post-college All Star games to keep the playing time to a minimum in the hopes of less time for injuries to occur. The big idea of the week is to let the coaches see how the players practice and how quickly they can pick up the "system" that is shown to them and pick up the plays to run.
  23. Interesting you say that. If you talk with players who weren't superstars, almost all of them mention Bobby on their own when talking with them. He's been a HUGE influence in inspiring ex-players to go on and have successful careers. The fact that players bring him up as an example of the values they've learned over their lives says much of what Bowden stands for and is about.
  24. Unless it's a hobo. Then you're fine. Give it up, kids. You can't have it both ways - bashing if there is trouble and no suspension/kicking someone off, or trouble followed by a suspension/kicking someone off the team. From "The Bowden Way" published 2001. Sounds just like he does when you take the time and talk with him. But you probably never have had that chance or taken that opportunity.
  25. Yeah, it was pretty curious. I can't really find anything out about it at this point, but I've heard it was from pot - after the confrontation during the UVA game, this was the final strike. At least the recruiting season is going pretty well. Should have a top 5 class when all is said and done.
