  1. Here is why Illinois is hard to recruit to: 1) The CPL has never been friendly to us, especially after the Jimmy Collins fiasco. You've got to pay if you want the players. 2) Illinois cannot afford to get it's hands dirty. There is a long history of violations, and the NCAA sees us in that light. The pay to play garbage is such a cop-out. I'm eager to hear the Illini backpedaling once they do land a couple of CPL kids. Somehow, they'll be doing it the right way, I'm sure. Or they'll have gotten the kids who don't have their hands out. But anyone who goes elsewhere was probably dirty and taking cash under the table. you see, illinois gets crap for recruiting players early so they can compete with programs like ku for kids and then you see stuff like this. if illinois lands cpl players, it's because weber has been eating dinner with their families since they were 14, not because he swooped into the congo and bought kamala and, more importantly, his handler kim chee, like the great white hunter you have for yourselves. self has the backing to show up with a dump-truck full of cash and grab these hessians at the last moment. weber needs to recruit the other ones, the ones without entourages and private armies, for years.
  2. come see our beautiful office building
  3. are those like the only 2 buildings in town or something?
  4. however, the school did produce the #1 college football player in history.
  5. He's a 19 year old international SS. Power is a lower priority and will always be the last thing to come to a player like Castro. Castro's defense may not be your priority, but it adds value to as a prospect. As for Castro being BABIP dependent, his low K rate means he wasn't BABIP lucky last year. And again, at 19 in AA being able to add value and have strong peripherals(low K's, decent BB, low pop ups, high LD) means he's very rare. The fangraphs article on him found his best comparisons thus far are like Jose Reyes and Robbie Alomar. He's worthy of his elite status. what other prospects would have seen comparisons like those? i'm just skeptical as to when his power is going to show up or when the cubs will be able to produce something rare.
  6. not really... there have been tons of guys like brad eldred, bob hamelin, etc. who hit for lots of power but didn't make enough contact to be adequate major league ballplayers. power is a good tool to have, but ability to make hard contact with good regularity and put the ball in play most of the time is an important skill. for a 19 year old to be able to put the ball in play as much as castro does speaks well to his future development. also, derek jeter hit 16 home runs in 454 minor league games. hitting for power doesn't necessarily mean just home runs. as far as the brad eldreds and bob hamelins go, power alone doesn't make you a top prospect and even if it were no one is really a sure thing, but it's good predictor of future success.
  7. weber is getting the players now, his 2010 class is the best since henson and his 2011 class could be just as good. in 2009, he got 3 contributors as freshmen and another guy who could be a nice piece of the puzzle next year.
  8. It just might not be our year. Please don't suck too much Sopel. it's never our year, never.
  9. i'm not playing the regular schtick right now, but the illinois basketball program has fallen victim to some remarkable disasters, be it the fault of the coaches or the fault of no one. bad news upon bad news was heaped upon the program. and, once again, illinois is still a tough sell for whatever reason.
  10. Minor correction, it was Aaron Spears instead of Carter. Spears was a fat [expletive] load. you're right, carter was the next year. my bad. spears...hahahaha
  11. and, like i said, self wasn't a very good recruiter while at illinois.
  12. the university of illinois, is, for some reason, a tough sell. many recruits simply feel like they're too good to play for state school in champaign, imo.
  13. self also regularly lost out on the top players in the state while he was at illinois. his best class had dee, deron, augustine, warren carter, and kyle wilson. deron was borderline top 50 and augustone was borderline top 100. wilson and carter were projects. kruger resurrected the program by getting the manual class, but was boycotted by the public league. he would have never been able to rebuild those in-roads to the point where illinois would have been a perennial powerhouse. weber's 2010 class is, on paper, probably the best class since the lou henson days, and, as bukie has so eloquently put it, it takes time to get kids to buy into a motion offense. you can't play it without very smart kids and it's not going to attract the run-of-the-mill kamalas-for-hire. i'm giving bruce another year to get things back to where they were.
  14. How is it possible that he isn't the top prospect? A 19 yr old SS, that plays very good defense, has a cannon for an arm and makes great contact at the plate. Watching him play today, you could see why everyone is excited about him. He seemed to have incredible range and got to one that I'm guessing Theriot wouldn't have gotten to. Same play he almost threw the guy out at first and probably would have if Lee were playing 1B instead of Hoffpauir. The only knock on him at this point, is that he doesn't hit for much power. It should be a simple decision, just as with Cashner. If he makes the team better he should be playing with the club. at the very most it's debatable that he's the top prospect. BP has Vitters as our #1. as for defense, that's not my top priority. there have been plenty of slick-fielding SS's in the league, most of them journeymen. what i want to see is power, power is a steady and predictable attribute of excellence. most everything else is highly contaminated by luck. he hasn't posted any real numbers at any level that would make me think he should be brought up at the age of 19 or be treated as anything more than a decent prospect.
  15. can castro even be considered our top prospect? if he were putting up monster numbers in the minors then we could consider bringing him up at 19, but he's not. is the team's perspective that warped that they'd think of doing such a thing? a "can't miss" i can understand, but he's not really much more than a guy at this point.
  16. that seems about right, but i think that any one of the top 4 could take the b10 crown.
  17. this will be just as satisfying as winning that championship trophy in that purdue guy's sig picture.
  18. well, the starters are back, which could be either good or bad news. the starting 5 should look like this: g- mccamey g- richardson g- paul f- richmond c- tisdale davis bertrand head leonard griffey simpson that's pretty strong, isn't it? it'll more probably look like this: dmac drich richmond davis tisdale with the kids buried on the bench, again. but he can't bury richmond. i'd start dmac and two freshmen and two sophomores.
  19. and i suppose people take your lame-ass comments seriously my comments are, at the very least, arguable./ you constantly say garbage that you KNOW isn't true and that you dont even believe. there's a huge difference, and everyone knows it. your "act" is so [expletive] tired. we get it dude. you just get done saying this team is "highly mediocre" and you take issue when i say that they aren't that good? i think you're the one who doesn't know what to believe so now you're going to intentionally take my words out of context? i said theyve been highly mediocre OVER THE LAST 24 GAMES, which they have. meanwhile you're spouting nonsense about how they suck and are going to suck every year, even though you know thats not true. and what are you implying by saying that they've sucked over the last 24 games? i'd assume you're using that to predict how they're going to perform the rest of the season. i actually don't have to assume, you openly claim it. since most peopla gree this is about as good as gets for the hawks, i don't think it's unreasonable to infer that they will never come close to a cup with this team, which is virtually un-upgradeable.
  20. and i suppose people take your lame-ass comments seriously my comments are, at the very least, arguable./ you constantly say garbage that you KNOW isn't true and that you dont even believe. there's a huge difference, and everyone knows it. your "act" is so [expletive] tired. we get it dude. you just get done saying this team is "highly mediocre" and you take issue when i say that they aren't that good? i think you're the one who doesn't know what to believe
  21. and i suppose people take your lame-ass comments seriously
  22. yup. this team has been avarage for the last 24 games. their spirits were absolutely broken by the wild that night. goodnight gracie.
  23. Oh man, you guys are hilarious when things go bad for awhile. Also, no team in the history of sports has ever recovered from a slump, so this team will pretty much be awful forever. Guaranteed. when are they going to recover? this team has been highly mediocre for 24 games now. that's a pretty [expletive] long time an even goal differential and just 13 wins in the last 24 games, and vancouver is right on our asses. my expectations at this point are to win the first round series and then lose to vancouver in the second round. if vancouver catches us then that makes it pretty hard for us to play detroit in the first round. so that's good, right? this team isn't that good and will continue to not be good year-after-year. stanley cup? what a [expletive] joke.
  24. i hope this is good for them, i really have to believe that it will be good for them. and i hope demetri is pissed and wants to come back.
  25. Which team's do you think should have been out? And really? You're going to blame the refs? yes, illinois got jobbed, especially at home. and the second purdue game was a [expletive] joke.
