like i said, it may have been the right thing to do at the time. the self cult phenomenon was influenced heavily by the inferiorityjilted lover complex a lot of us illini fans continue to have, weber was a rebound, we thought self was the one even though he was never really our coach. we were evolving into a top program at the time, self had taken us to an elite 8 and a sweet 16, we had a great season the year before with mostly freshmen, even though we were upset by notre dame shooting out of their minds in the tourney. we were poised to make a couple of deep runs, which we did with self's players--but we couldn't sustain the success, which many feel would have been sustained under self. i wish he would have been the one, i really do. but some people didn't want to accept the simple fact that KU is way out of our league in terms of tradition and brand. also, they have those dump trucks and they aren't afraid to use them. i'm one of the people that felt that had KU beaten syracuse, williams would have stayed at KU and self would have stayed at UI. however, deluding ourselves into thinking that self wouldn't have taken the job at OSU is unhealthy thinking. hell, UNC may have gone after self if williams had turned them down--and they would have had him at hello.
