  1. Negative = Me, KC, Jon, TT, Navin, CubsinNY, Rob (might have missed a few) Positive= Everyone else You missed me. I may have been more negative on the Soriano signing than anyone here. Can't find the link, but I remember stating that it would land on the short list of the worst contracts in the history of sports. Too bad search is still disabled. I complained about that contract so much I got sick of my own bitching. I found this on page 17 of the signing thread: viewtopic.php?t=36777&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=240
  2. but will it be anywhere near as entertaining as the Soriano signing thread? At least this time I don't think I'll be arguing against everyone!!! YAY. I was on your side last time, nilo. Ahh yes, sorry CR. There were a few of us. I think possibly meph too. Which side were you guys on?
  3. You could have said the same about the Cubs last year. Some organizations are just very reluctant to have a rebuilding year. I can't say I've ever seen the Cubs have one. The Cubs at least had talented players who are not all in the back half of their 30's. Omar Vizquel will be 41 and is coming off his worst season ever at the plate. Rich Aurilia will be 36 and Ryan Klesko will be 37 in April. Ray Durham is 36. Dave Roberts will be 36. Excluding Barry Bonds since he won't be a Giant in 2008, Randy Winn is the only player who had an OPS+ above 100 last year (105). I totally agree that they should blow it up and not even try to contend in 2008. I'm just saying that some teams make an attempt to contend every year, even when they'd be better off not trying. The Cubs have historically been really bad about that. I don't know about the Giants.

  5. If Prior won't agree to a team option for 2009 then it's time to cut him loose.
  6. With things the way they are, you're probably right. If Hendry gets a little creative with current salary and ARods, I thinks it's possible. If ARod just wants all the cash he could get, I think he would have stayed with the Yanks so maybe it's possible that he wants to play somewhere that he's comfortable and that's where Lou comes in big time. Hendry would most likely have to dump some large contracts to have any hope of getting the Trib to authorize a pursuit of ARod. DLee and Lilly could be moved, though their absence would create new holes to fill, and Hendry surely wants to keep them anyway. I think ARod is going somewhere out west.
  7. I can't see how the Cubs get into this bidding war. There are too many fat contracts already on the books and ownership is about to change. I give the Cubs no more than a 1% chance of getting ARod
  8. I'll ask my usual questions when I see this type of proposal: A) Would you consider this a good trade if you were a fan of the other team? B) Do you really think the other team couldn't get a better offer for the listed players?
  9. My favorite: Does he actually think everyone has forgotten about his "give me my horses and I'll win" comments?
  10. 2009 is when things get real ugly. 7 players will get $90M, and these are all guys who are currently at their career peaks and can only get worse or more fragile as time goes by. It's going to cost well over $100M just to put a complete team in the dugout. This is an era when slow fat unversatile bench players like Daryle Ward are deemed a bargain at $1.2M, so we'll need a pretty hefty payroll increase to actually contend.
  11. It's quite possible he'd be that much better than Marquis. It's quite possible Lou and Jim have a nasty fight over whether to replace Marquis via trade in July. Jim will naturally be hesitant because he's the guy who gave Marquis $21M. Lou won't care.
  12. Really doubt it would happen. After the whole roster is filled out you're looking at a humongous payroll with heavy backloading for aging players plus a depleted farm, things which would necessitate even more spending in the future. I'm sure Cuban wants to win but we shouldn't ask him to make us the Yankees of the NL.
  13. Do you really think the Reds couldn't get a better offer than that?
  14. I'm not sure if Beane is totally sincere. He probably knows that if you had a lineup full of speed/BA hitters such as Pierre they'd have to be cheap as dirt to make it work. Like, cheap enough that you'd save enough money to buy a killer pitching staff, because you'd need it.
  15. If Dempster were making $2M next year I'd say just keep him. Since he's getting $5.5M I'd like to see if there's a market for him. That money could certainly be better spent.
  16. I'm not sure Sizemore is a realistic option. Given his age, productivity, position, and fantastically desirable contract, we'd have to trade the cream of the farm system to get him. The Cubs are facing a major budget crunch in the winter of 2008. If the farm is gutted this offseason Hendry will have to go the FA route to fill holes, only there won't be any money for it.
  17. Freel will easily surpass his career high for plate appearances if he can stay healthy.
  18. 33 home runs, 42 doubles, 5 triples, 173 hits, and a crummy 70 RBI's. Very poor use of Soriano's skills and of $136 million. The fact that he was hobbled with leg injuries for much of the season makes it even more inexcusable.
  19. It's a big deal because it shows up on the organization's balance sheet as debt. This will directly affect the sale price of the team. If they are bad and immovable contracts which will necessitate even more spending to field a competitive team then that's yet another negative in the eyes of a potential buyer. As fans we should be concerned because it's going to take a new owner with very deep pockets to field a good team after 2008.
  20. But if Lou didn't move him out permanently then, what makes you think he will if Soriano does it again? 18 RBI wasn't embarrassing enough. It has to be 10 or less.
  21. If you want an example of a Dusty player who was the offensive polar opposite of Dunn(except speedwise) then look at Randall Simon -- high BA, low OBP, few strikeouts, few walks, and poor power for his position. Simon brought absolutely nothing to the table except a good BA and low K rate, and Dusty loved him, even asked Hendry to bring him back for 2004. Dunn is the perfect anti-Simon at the plate.
  22. If Soriano has a monster month (1.000 OPS or better) and puts up only 10 RBI's then Lou will starting questioning himself. You'd think last June would have done it. Soriano had a 1.076 OPS and a measly 18 RBI on the month. 11 of the RBI's were Soriano driving himself in with a home run, so he only drove in 7 baserunners.
  23. Bonds didn't K at record setting #s, and he didn't have a low BA. That's 2 strikes for Dusty. Have to agree, the strikeouts and low BA will drive Dusty crazy, not to mention the lack of speed. Dusty has a history of liking awful players who bring nothing to the table other than a respectable BA, a low K rate, and average or better speed. That stuff is very very important to Dusty. Bonds is a slow baserunner, but otherwise his offense has no weaknesses.
  24. Bonus for every game player appears in despite being listed as "questionable" before the game. Big bonus if listed as "doubtful." Talking a coach into going against his better judgment so you can get in a game while banged up indicates you are a scrappy go-getter with impressive moxie.
  25. Bonus for skinning elbow on a slide(SkE). Big bonus if blood actually trickles down forearm or somehow creates a noticeable red spot on uniform(VB: visible bleeding).
