  1. After Smoltz we face 3 lefties in a row, so Ronny should finally see some time. As much as he's sat, there's no excuse not to start him in all 3 games. After watching this season I have come to despise the concept of calling up rookies just to face lefties.
  2. This is basically do or die time. Either start winning series', or start playing the rookies. It would be very tough going into the all star break down 8-10 games. We'd need one hell of a second half just to keep pace. Need to start winning now. These next 2 games in Atlanta are the most important of the season so far. If we win both we are only 4 games back in the WC race, if we lose both we are 8 back. That wouldn't be fatal but it would be very very bad. We really need a split at the least.
  3. I still don't see why Baker is the only problem on this team. Barrett sucks (4-46), so a new manager is going to get him to be better? Patterson sucks right now, so a new manager is going to get him to play better? Hairston misses signs and runs the bases poorly. A new manager is going to change that? Maddux has a 5+ERA. A new manager is going to change that? Burnitz turns into Moises Alou on the bases. A new manager is going to change that? Baker is part of the problem, but don't kid yourself into thinking that the players have nothing to do with the record and poor play. I'm a pretty harsh Baker basher at times but I agree there is plenty of blame to go around.
  4. It'd take something special to pick Dusty off in the dug-out with a foul ball. Is it too much to hope Corey could do it and redeem himself? Dusty got hit by a foul ball last year. hit by Jose Macias, no less. Yet he still plays Macias. I don't get it. Macias has started exactly 5 games out of 82 this year. Compare that to the amount of playing time he got last year. Dusty seems to fall madly in love with one stinky bench player every year, and this year it's Neifi. Poor Gremlin.
  5. The Cubs are a lot closer to disaster than some people think. The Braves have been playing great and could very quickly open up a 10 game lead over us in the WC race. At that point Hendy would have to decide what to do at the deadline, and I'm guessing he wouldn't want to sacrifice a lot of young talent for an unlikely run this year.
  6. The Braves need to cool down if the Cubs are to have any chance. They have won 14 of their last 19 and have a 6 game lead in the WC race. The Nats have been really hot for a few weeks too. If nothing changes I think the Cubs season could effectively end within about 10 days.
  7. An injury to Perez would actually help the Cubs. Cedeno would get to play and we wouldn't have Neifi's putrid bat at the top of the order. Of course I'm not saying I want Neifi injured.
  8. It doesn't have to be complicated. The GM should simply ask the manager if he is prepared to let the rookie face right-handed pitching. If the answer is yes, then the kid is available for callup, if no, then the kid stays in the minors. This should be a standard communication between every GM and field manager. Instead we see things like Cedeno being called up and then sitting around waiting for a lefty to face. This stuff puzzles me.
  9. Hairston is now officially trade bait.
  10. A lot of us are hoping he's part of the dismantling before the rebuilding. As for the division, it's over. I'm not even paying attention to what the Cards are doing. They could call up Memphis - all of it - and still win the division. Yeah, the division is a done deal for the Cards. My worst fear for the Cubs is that they continue to straggle in the middle of the playoff pack. Of course I want them to win the WC, but if not then I'd rather they lose a ton of games starting now so they can commit to a proper retooling. The worst seasons are the ones where you don't contend and you don't rebuild either. Watching a proper rebuilding could actually be fun, especially with a new manager.
  11. I have never understood this. There are just not enough lefty starting pitchers to make it worthwhile to call up a rookie to face only lefties. It might be sensible if you feel the rookie in question will never amount to anything more than a part-time/utility player but otherwise I don't get it. Cedeno and Dubois just look like wasted callups to me. They're not going to progress facing only lefties. This seems perfectly obvious to me. Honestly I think every right-handed hitting position prospect in the Cubs system would do himself a huge favor by learning how to switch hit.
  12. It's getting harder to remain optimistic. The wild card is still in reach but the division is a longshot even if the Cards go .500 from here on out. In the WC race we are in 5th place and 6 games back. If the bad baseball continues for another 10 days or so we will probably be reduced to longshots even for the WC and Hendry will become a seller at the deadline. It would be really interesting to see how Dusty handles a rebuilding project.
  13. Neifi's cheating is embarrassing. I hate to see it and I admit he richly deserves a fastball at his knees.
  14. Neifi intentially walked? Now that is just silly.
  15. Who would this guy's catcher be? Hmmm, i vote Jose Macias. That was appropriately mean for a 666th post. Number of the Beast and all that, you know.
  16. Who would this guy's catcher be?
  17. I'd like to believe we'll never see Neifi at the top of the lineup again, but I'm skeptical. Worst thing that could happen now is Neifi has a few good games. Then back to the top he goes til August.
  18. I think Dusty does what he sincerely believes will help the team win. Unfortunately he's not very bright and often stubbornly refuses to pull the plug on his failed experiments.
  19. Burnitz should get some days off and Dubois should play RF those days. Burnitz is not Sammy Sosa and his bat doesn't need to be in every game, and Dubois is being wasted and possibly ruined. In the last 13 games he has gotten 13 at bats. He needs to play more or be traded.
  20. The whole team ought to beat up Tony Womack. His offense is unfathomably awful for a corner outfielder and he's not even a good fielder.
  21. They also get chances to make the last 2 outs of the game as Lee watches from the on deck circle.
  22. Wait til Neifi comes back. I bet Corey goes back to leadoff.
  23. I've wondered about the steroid thing too. I asked a few weeks ago if anyone had noticed any size reduction in Huff but no one answered. I'm still curious.
  24. At one time I would have been thrilled to get Huff but not now. His power has deserted him and I don't want a slow singles hitter in left field.
