    Peoria could have a really nice team this year. I'd be pleasantly surprised if Rundle makes it up to Peoria to start the season. But there's potentially a lot of talent on that team. Of course the source is Rogers, so it's definitely BS. fixed.

    I don't know about that. I would imagine eating children would give you alot of protein and strong muscles. Marquis threw like my grandma last year, so that kind of throws out that theory. :lol:

    I don't mind Theriot as a backup. I'm not sure he's going to be any kind of option as a starter. He's 27 so he's not exactly a "prospect", and it's rare for guys to suddenly figure it out that far into their careers. I think it's reasonable to believe he'll give us better numbers than Neifi for a fraction of the cost, but I don't think he'll be able to duplicate last seasons .412 OBP over a whole season. Does anyone else know of many guys that didn't break into the majors until age 27 that amounted to anything? Freddy Sanchez. Hard to believe that guy is 29 years old now. He's older than Jason Bay, Xavier Nady, and Jack Wilson.

    I didn't really fault Dusty for skipping the 5th starter when he did. When your 5th starter is someone like Estes, it's good to skip him. Hopefully this year, we won't have a black hole for the 5th guy, so there's not need to skip him.

    I would be happy if the Cubs got him of course, but not through a trade. Wait until he's a FA. I don't like the prospect of giving up the farm for someone like him. His weight gain over the last year or two would have me a little concerned over trading as much as it would take to get what Florida would be marketing as a cornerstone player. My fears could be pure unwarranted, but I'm doubtful he'll keep his production up if he doesn't start taking better care of himself. He did not appear as if he'd took that good of care of himself from 05 to 06.

    Lets see how he performs before making bold statements like that. If he reverts back to his sub 4.00 ERA form, $7MM a year will be a bargain, if he puts up a 6.00 ERA it was a horrible signing. Yeah, I can't give the nod to Marquis until he actually pitches his way to something worse than Todd Hundley. Hundley at least didn't look insane at the time. He looked as if he had recovered from his injuries and the Cubs had a massive crater at catcher. The '07 Cubs have 5 guys I would have rather given the spot to(all things considered) than Marquis. Would the crater analogy for justifying a signing apply to Estes when he filled our *need* for a lefty in the rotation? Estes was a worse signing than either. But at least we weren't stuck with him for three years though, and we did manage to get some good players back out of Hundley.

    I don't know that I can argue and that doesn't make me happy. Just use the stat that batters swing at his first pitch 70% of the time. It's actually 115%. 60% of the time, they swing every time. The other half of the time, they take the pitch every time. And they don't make contact 100% of that time either. :o

    I don't see any reason why he needs that. He's not lacking playing time on his resume. I don't see him learning anything more by playing everyday in AAA as opposed to subbing at the major league level. At some point guys have to sink or swim. The time for keeping guys in the minors playing everyday is when they are 21/22 with minimal professional experience. Cedeno is 24 and has plenty of experience. Now he has to establish himself as a major leaguer, and hope to be good enough to one day start. He had a good '04, was blistering in '05, and started out '06 on fire. Then he slumped after being overexposed to Dusty. I really think he can turn it back around with a little patience, and I think he's young enough to get it with the right coaching. If the choice is Izturdis or Cedeno, I'd rather see what Perry can do with Cedeno over the course of the year. At least with Ronny, there's a sliver of hope. Izturdis is going to hit like, well, like a turd. That's already known.

    Yep, there's no longer a value to Soriano for having the ability to play 2nd. That's good, because he never could play 2nd base.

    A lot of people have written off Cedeno. I'd really like to see him get time over Izturdis and see if someone teaching him a little patience can turn him back around.

Call me optimisic (I am a Cubs fan, afterall), but I hope this is a sign that he realizes he's not an ironman, and he needs to take extra precautions to take care of himself. That could be a very good thing.

    The article also lists the top 5 unsettled closer situations, and we weren't listed. I thought for sure we would be with Wood going to the pen and Dempster sucking last year. Maybe they took us off of that list when Wood fell out of his hot tub and hurt his ribs?

    The funny thing is though, the odds that Marquis will perform well enough to justify $21 mil is probably about as good as Drew getting hurt and not performing for his salary. Don't read too much into that though, I'd still much rather have taken the chance on JD than Marquis...

    Looking at some stats lines put a few funny things into perspective for me... Maddux was one win away from being tied for the league lead in wins. Zambrano tied for the league lead in wins. He allowed the most walks in all of baseball :shock: He also allowed the second fewest hits per 9 innings in baseball. :D Pierre was the hardest guy in all of baseball to strike out. He was also one of only two players not to miss a game at all last year (Francouer was the other). He also lead the NL in singles, but still had 30 singles less than Ichiro (156 to 186). He also made the most outs in all of baseball with 532. At least you can't say it was from a lack of contact... No 20 game winners in either league. Chuck James had the highest winning percentage in the NL (who the heck is Chuck James?) Solomon Torres appeared in 94 games...and we thought Dusty was bad... The Cubs didn't have anyone finish in the top 10 of the NL in losses (don't know how that happened) Just a few odd facts I hadn't seen yet. Anyone got any others?

    if hes anything like Roger Clemems? quite awhile Again, the very tiny exception to the huge majority. As great as Z has been, and as young as he has been, if you compare him to Clemens when he was 25, he's not quite on the Clemens track. Clemens had two cy youngs, was coming off of his third 250+ inning, 140+ ERA+ year, and had two 20 win seasons already. I would trade Z, but it'd be a heck of a package to convince me it'd improve the team. We'd have to shed some dead weight also as an added bonus.

    Dude is set for a breakdown in the next couple of years thanks to Dusty. greg maddux pitched under dusty too. How often was he on the DL? I'm not saying Dusty didn't abuse pitchers, but to trade arguably your team MVP based on a maybe seems like a terrible, terrible idea Maddux was the exception, not the norm. Re: Lilly as the ace, I'm not okay with Lilly being the Ace (besides, it'd be Prior if healthy, if not then Hill, or possibly Bedard if he was in the trade). I wouldn't decide whether or not to make that trade based on it leaving Lilly as the ace. I'd make a decision based on whether or not it improved the team, and I think that trade would. The question is, whether you weigh more for short term or long term improvement. Coming off of a 66 win season, I'm not looking to win it all this year. I'd be looking long term, and I believe that trade improves the team more in the long run than the short run. If the downfall of that trade is that it leaves Lilly as the ace, then that's a bigger sign that we're not put together to seriously contend this year anyways, which is all the more reason to make a long-term trade.

    Psh. I'd trade Z to them for Tejada and Bedard. Bedard looks like he's got the goods, but he's not the centerpiece in a deal for Z. They'd have to take Izcrapis off of our hands as well before I even consider it. How about Bedard, Tejada, and Markakis for Z, Izturis, and Jones? Throw in Eyre plus eat his salary if need be. Throw in Marshall if needed as well.

    Marmol didn't qualify as a prospect but Mateo did? He must have just barely not qualified.

    Last time we had Hill, we traded him for the Pirates for a young 3bman who was soon going to be too expensive for them. Think we could flip him again for Freddy Sanchez? :lol:
