  1. I can't imagine that he would be upset about this decision. If he did make it, he has to know that his playing time would be limited considering how many MLB outfielders are already in camp. If the Cubs didn't have Ward and Jones, and the Cubs went with Buck Coats and Angel Pagan, I could see some reason to be upset. As well as Pie is doing in ST, I can't imagine he could outproduce any of Floyd, Murton, Soriano or Jones in his inaugural season in the big leagues. In fact, I'd lay some money down that he couldn't. And I'm a pretty big Pie fan. Let him play everyday in Iowa and make the decision of whether to trade Jones at the deadline for a midseason call up a very tough one for Hendry and Piniella. I would rather he made that decision an easy one for them. :D
  2. He gave up a homer with the bases juiced Izzy with another hit Woodchip is right. Any runs scored after there are two outs and there has been an error (where the guy didn't later get out) should be unearned. Intuitively, it makes sense. I disagree. An argument could easily be made that the batter (after the error) has nothing to do with the previous hitter. IMO, that run should be on Woody. Batter that hit the HR would not have batted in the inning had the error not been committed. yeah but he would have batted the next inning. The men on base should be unearned. I know that's not how its scored, but it should be. A home run is at least one run no matter what inning its hit in. The reason its not scored that way is because who knows where you draw the line? How many would be earned with an error followed by a triple followed by a single. What if that batter was in the ninth inning? had the batter came in the next inning, he would have faced another pitcher, and may not have still hit that homer.
  3. You should be teaching if you have a room full of students!!!!!! At least look at NSBB on your planning period, like I am doing right now :) Okay, how about a recap for those of us in Iraq on a crappy satellite feed that isn't good enough to stream any kind of audio or video?
  4. He pitched 3 shutout innings... d'oh. theres still hope for breakdown after the innings stack up. Oh he is a cardinal I am sure it will work very well. His Cardinals career hasn't been so illustrious up to this point... He'll have a great year for the Cards, after which, Duncan will make his arm fall off.
  5. Wasn't it something insane like 3/34? 3/34.5 I think. That is absolutely horrible. I don't think the deal is that bad actually. You're both right. It's less-bad than almost every other contract from this off-season, but ti's still horrible. They're all getting overpaid.
  6. He did have a pretty nice rebound in 96, though. When I saw that, I didn't think of comparing him to Prior for hope...I thought of Marquis. 6+ ERA one year, below three the next...
  7. I was thinking Pagan, but yeah, Diehard is the better comparison.
  8. I hate that line of thinking. In the military, we call it mass punishment. Mass punishment is form of leadership for the incompetent...the leader can't effectively influence his all of his subordinates into proper behavior, so he punishes everyone and hopes the offenders peers can influence the proper behavior. It is a substitute for a lack of leadership, and the wrong people pay for it. Should Derreck Lee give up his batting title a couple of years ago because we had that guy from the Yankees for awhile that got caught after we traded him? That's just one example. I believe in the strong-handed approach. Shoot the first offender in the face, and watch everyone else fall in line. If the current penal and testing systems do not deter steroids use, then the testing and penal systems need to get tougher until they do. If it takes weekly testing, a season-long ban on the first offense and a lifetime ban for a second offense, so be it.
  9. Just one other note everyone is missing. Prior reportedly topped out at 89. That doesn't mean he wasn't still sitting at 83-85 for the most part. I'm not getting too worked up yet regardless, but Sullivan's report that he topped out at 89 shouldn't be taken as if it were refuting the claims he was working at 83-85. Topping out just means the highest he hit on the radar. Plus, they may have had a slow gun, I don't know.
  10. I guess we know what motivates Santana. I just lost a lot of respect for him. That quote there represents alot of things that are wrong with professional sports today.
  11. I'm disappointed with BA on this article, it seems far beneath their standards. I doubt any real research or effort went into it. They simply picked a few of each organizations top prospects who looked like they would break into the majors by then, and plugged them into a spot. Any two bit writer could have done that with little effort. I expect more from BA than this. The fact that he admitted to overlooking Hill just confirms not much effort went into the article. If you're not going to put any thought or effort into it, then don't do it.
  12. Uh, that's actually one thing that I thought Dusty did say a great deal. I don't really think so. Dusty would, more often than not, find a way to deflect blame for why they didn't get the job done and he certainly never came out and said play was unacceptable. I also don't recall Dusty, publically, challenging guys; telling them to step up their collective game if they expect to play. I guess we have different memories then. Dusty would deflect it some of the time, but he said all of that plenty of times. He also challenged people to step up their game-Rich Hill is a perfect example of somebody who he said had to step up if he expected to play. I thought that Dusty talked about execution in the way Piniella is there most of the time when addressing what was wrong with his team. In fact, he was widely criticized for blaming it on simply not executing in that way. Whether Dusty deflected blame or not depended on how many years the offending player had in the league...
  13. This has probably been discussed in threads. But dammit, this makes me smile. I love how it's only ST and Piniella is speaking strong words about sloppy play already. What would dusty say in this situation? "My teams have always played good fundimentals in the past". Sorry to get on his back about that but it's such a refreshing change. link HE ACTUALLY SAW SOMETHING FROM THE DUGOUT!! I never felt that we had fielded a fundamentally sound team during Baker's tenure. I'm optimistic Piniella is going to change that.
  14. If you read the article, you'll see that his arm troubles began when Girardi sent him back into a game after an 82-minute rain delay. I'm no doctor, but I don't think that caused it either. It's not like we're talking about with muscles, tendons, or ligaments. If his problem really is nerve damage, I would think that would take quite awhile to manifest, and would be due to something being wrong over time. That said, that was a bad move on his part. I'm surprised that Girardi did that, you would think if anyone was sympathetic to pitchers in those kinds of situations, it would be a catcher.
  15. I'm assuming someone tossed him some cash. I believe a Chicago Area dentist fixed his teath for free a few years back. You gotta tip your hat to the guy...I don't know of any other "professional Cubs fans" who have a dental plan...
  16. Two years ago when the Cubs were in NY to play the Yankees, who is walking around Yankee stadium yelling CUBS WOO!, none other than Ronnie. How does he make it anywhere? The guy has some sort of super power. He had five months to get there... I guess he probably hitchhikes. Or who knows...maybe he's one of those weird types...lives like a vagabond while he's really got millions in the bank. There are a few of those out there... Maybe he's really some sort of superhero. Yeah, that probably is more likely...
  17. Oh yeah, my first IBL too!
  18. LMNOP? that's a typical response to HIJK.
  19. I don't think we land Arod without Aramis being part of the deal. ARod wouldn't cost us 20 per year. I don't think NYs on the hook for that much after Texas kicks in a little to compensate. I could see NY kicking in another 3 per year and dropping that salary to around $15-18 per year if they got back someone like Aramis.
  20. I didn't really articulate what it was that made me grimace. Call it a natural reflex. That quote gave me a flashback to the day when Dusty would do a double switch to ensure he was sticking with the lefty-righty matchup. Not that Lou is Dusty or Ward was here before, I just hated last year whenever Dusty would pull his famous double switches so the lefty with the .220 average against righties can pinch hit over the righty with a .260 average against righties. And I'm only talking averages because Dusty didn't want pinch hitters who would go up there and clog bases.
  21. Did anyone else grimace at the last quote in that article, where he says they got the bases loaded, and they had the right guy (Ward) at the plate?
  22. Two years ago when the Cubs were in NY to play the Yankees, who is walking around Yankee stadium yelling CUBS WOO!, none other than Ronnie. How does he make it anywhere? 23. I've done something similar to that before as well. You weren't the one that ran him over with the car a couple of years ago, were you?
  24. It's tough not to as he's saying all the right things but it is the honeymoon period! Hey...even just saying the right things is an improvement over the past. We spent an awful amount of time trying to put a positive spin on Dusty's quotes in the media his first two years, didn't we?
  25. Am I the only one who laughed when reading this?
