    No, I wasn't referring to you. Actually, I think he was thinking about Luis Castillo. He's a speedy guy that fits the top-of-the-order-base-stealing mold, but he hasn't stolen much in the last few years. Pierre's not bad about stealing. He had a down year a couple of years ago (I think he was playing with an injury), but if you took that year out, he's over 75 percent too. Castillo's just horrible at stealing bases (52sb/30cs the last three years combined).

    The Reds will respond with demands for quality. They'll bring Pie into the discussion. Your next step? If adding Pie to that proposal lands us a deal, then I say "it's a Dunn deal." (sorry, couldn't resist)

    Laugh at the Dodgers. Then get laughed at by the Dodgers when we pay an arm and a leg for Pierre. Or just don't get Pierre at all and laugh at the Dodgers some more. That is what you or I would do. However, Hendry want's a "bona-fide, prototypical" leadoff hitter, and it seems to be his highest priority. If he doesn't get Furcal, who do you think he's going to go after to fill that void? I am seriously concerned that if we don't sign Furcal, we're going to go after Pierre, and we're going to go after him hard.

    Is Bill James still one of Boston's top advisors, or did he leave with Theo. Because if he has any influence on the deal, I can't see Boston wanting anything to do with CPatt.

    Absolutely agree. Think about this folks: 5 years and $45M for a guy, who has never achieved an OPS over .795, and who's OBP has not been above .352 in the last 4 seasons. This is just not smart. He's a SS who hits leadoff. There aren't many of those who have an OPS above .800. It's basically Derek Jeter and ... Derek Jeter.[/b] Think the much-aligned Yankee's 3B could go back to short? Maybe it'd be a waste of a bat at leadoff, but the team would be better wherever he hit, it wouldn't matter.

    Nixon is Plan Z Surely we can do better than him. I'd take him ahead of Jacque Jones or other similar RFers. I'd put Kearns higher on my list than him. Not too crazy about this proposal. On second thought, does Boston have any more Matt-Murton-type prospects they might throw in on that deal?

    Is anyone else worried about who Hendry will pursue as a leadoff man if Furcal doesn't sign with us, whether he's overpaid or not?

    Not to Hijack the thread, but I like how Cedeno overcame his slow start in the winter league and has gone on to play well. Show's a little mental toughness and resiliancy to bounce back the way he has. Back to subject: Is he worth $10 mil more than RonnyC? Heck no, not even close. Is he worth $7.5 more than Neifi? Sounds like you're trying to start something there... :lol:

    Absolutely agree. Think about this folks: 5 years and $45M for a guy, who has never achieved an OPS over .795, and who's OBP has not been above .352 in the last 4 seasons. This is just not smart. Yeah, but think about what happens if we don't sign him: Hendry will very likely give FL what they want in overpaying for a one year rental in Pierre. I'd rather pay Furcal his money.

    Nah, I'm sure the agent would be apposed to getting a higher offer at the last minute. :lol: cha ching I think it's really a two team race. I can't see him going to LA.

    I don't know why, but I always assumed he was a rookie in '04, I thought he was younger than what he was. You'd think I'd be a little more aware of our AAAA players. Either way, not interested in him now...

    Pierre isn't a lock (lots of other teams are after him as well) and frankly, Furcal is a better leadoff man and defensive player. The Cubs have gone too far to take the offer off the table. I HIGHLY doubt we have a legitimate shot to get Pierre. Supposedly, Florida wanted alot more from the NL teams than the AL teams in the Castillo deal. I think the Pierre deal will be handled in the same manner. Not to mention that Rotoworld is now reporting that the Marlins have asked the Yankees to give up Robinson Cano if they want Pierre. Just imagine what they would expect from the Cubs. The conversation would probably start with Murton or Cedeno. I don't give either of htem up for Pierre. I don't object to trading young talent, but I want better than Pierre for those two.

    Why would you want Wilson? The guy had a .299 OBP last year. Might as well put Neifi at SS. Aramis had a great 2001 with our AAAA team, but digressed in '02, and wasn't doing too hot either in '03 with them. Then he caught fire with us. Think Wilson could follow the same path? I wouldn't be disappointed if Hendry took a gamble on him if we missed out on Furcal. With Neifi, you know what you're going ot get. With Wilson, there's a chance to get a whole lot more, and we'd be buying low instead of high (like with Aramis). I think it's the exact opposite of Ramirez, Ramirez had several productive season in the minors as well as his breakout year before his regression. Wilson in his 3 years prior to his "breakout" season had OBPs of .255, .306, .303, then his .335 breakout, and back down to .299. OBP isn't everything, but it was his only season above.700 OPS as well. Wow, I didn't realize Wilson's numbers in the minors were so shoddy. Nevermind then....sounds like his rookie year was a fluke, and the league figured him out after that.

    Excellent. If he signs with us, I owe everyone that actually believed it beforehand here a Coke. I'm serious. I'll mail everyone here a Coke if he signs here. That's a lot of cokes. Can I get a Cherry Coke if it happens? :lol: Ewww, coke. How about a Pepsi? Fugedaboudit. I'm high maintenance. I want an IBC Root Beer. Does that come in 12 packs? 6s only, as far as I'm aware. He'd only need 5 other people who dring IBC vs 11 cherry coke or pepsi drinkers.

    Why do you think LA is the last team he wants to go to? Their organization is in shambles and likely won't be in position to seriously compete, even in that weak division, for hte next three years. If you believe his agent (yeah, hard to do, I know), money isn't going to be the determining factor in where he signs. If he does sign with LA, then it's obvious that money is the number one factor of the signing. The organization is seriously behind our organization, even moreso Atlanta's. LA is a horrible city compared to either Atlanta or Chicago, don't think he'd be excited to live there vs the alternatives. Other than the money, what motivation could he possibly have to play in LA?

    No one would listen because he wouldn't report bogus and "exciting" trade proposals. The Score always has these stupid reports which force people to listen. NSBB Poster: The Score just reported (insert trade so ridiculous, you'd have to hear it to believe it was actually reported) Us: No way! I'm gonna listen! (Tune in)... That's so stupid! It's gotta be some brilliant marketing strategy :lol: The Score seems to think that Hendry might be listening to their broadcasts, be overwhelmed by the intelligence of such insightful and great moves, and decide to go and make them happen. Kind of like that James Bond movie where the media guy was trying to make the news, instead of just report it.

    I think you're waaaaay off base on Wood's value. Maybe in other years, but there aren't any aces on the market this year on the FA market. If Wood was put on the market (and if there wasn't any issues with his NTC), I'm sure there would be several pitching-desperate teams that woudl be willing to overpay for him. The only other top notch name I've heard on the market is Zito, and although he's more consistant and has been injury free, he's not on the same level as Wood when both are healthy. Wood at his best is WAY better than Zito at his best.

    I think LA is the last team he wants to go to, they'll have to significantly outbid us and Atlanta to get him. Right now, they're around 13 per. I think if Hendry increases to 11 per over 5 years, we'll be the more attractive team to him.

    http://www.baseballprospectus.com/dt/huffau01.shtml Those numbers bear out that he's decidedly subpar. BP2005 categorizes him as a "high-quality hitter with a low-quality glove". And STATS and most scouts I've seen say he's perfectly adequate. BP is, well - BP. Consider the source. Alot of people put alot of credibility behind BP. I don't think they're any better than, say, Peter Gammons, but that's a topic that could be widely debated.

    I think there's quite a difference rehabbing your torn labrum, and rehabbing a torn labrum that is your entire livelihood. Really? What's the difference? Either it's fully healed, or it's not. If anything, I would think Wood's rehab would be better, as he's alot more motivated to do exactly what the Dr prescribes, whereas someone else (like Pedro above) may have a full time job and may not always be able to spend the time doing all of the rehab. Wood doesn't have anything to do all winter except work on his arm.
