  1. Alas, off a Single-A pitcher.
  2. It's funny until someone loses an eye.
  3. At least Mueller was a decent MLB hitter. But a hitting coach is not a shortcut around actually getting good hitters on your team.
  4. The fact that we paid him $5 million last year for nothing should have no bearing on our decisions going forward. Don't water your weeds. Move on.
  5. Frey replaced Green and was an absolute disaster as GM. Traded Lee Smith, Palmeiro, Moyer and Dave Martinez for nothing. Who else did I forget?
  6. Wouldn't you think that Garza on an Edwin Jackson-type contract has a higher value to the Cubs than if they got Tanaka on the Yankees' terms? Although maybe Garza doesn't want to play for a losing team either.
  7. .496 SLG on the road over the last two years (391 AB).
  8. Morrison to Mariners. Next!
  9. He is never starting a game in the majors (again). I think that'd the obvious route that will happen, but haven't they kept saying they're not ruling it out until they determine what's best for him and the team's plans? I always figured that a fragile arm might gain from pitching on a predetermined schedule rather than relieving. If seven innings is too much of a strain, why not 2 or 3 innings every three days? Every team has the same 5 starters, middle relievers, setup men and closer. I wonder when some team will blow up that model and make a leap forward.
  10. Is Lake playing somewhere this winter? I must admit my optimism about him increased with the statistical comparison with Starlin Marte.
  11. What is Maddon worth? Would you give up a Vogelbach to get him? It's a difficult question because all we can really judge a manager's worth by is on field results, and there are so many variables that go into that. But with Maddon, his results (doing so much with so little, almost all young, internally developed players) are so compelling that, yes, I would give up Vogelbach to get him. I'd probably give up another prospect in the 10-20 range along with him, too. I mean if we're talking about a player development manager, which is what we should want above all else at this point, Maddon has to be the gold standard right now. Maddon came from the Angels system and was a protégé of Scioscia. Who is next in that pipeline? Don Wakamatsu was supposed to be like that, but I think that's over. Rob Piccolo?
  12. for those who were unaware, gretzky's mother is former american gladiator, Lace, seen here, below. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ht6Oo_qx5Vc/UYnmL3kqs8I/AAAAAAAAAkw/Wo_R4UwIOuU/s320/american_gladiators_box.jpg Not cool. There are some young people on this board who don't know any better. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4GZFbCqx18
  13. When did we get Ramirez? I'll check "Transactions." Also, about Baker, if he can pitch and he comes cheap, why not? Arrietta has not shown me that he can be consistent despite his great stuff.
  14. ...or traded to Atlanta to replace Heyward.
  15. The candid remarks of Hoyer about bringing back Dejesus made me suspicious about what actually happened. Isn't that a tampering issue? Maybe it will be like NFL free agency and he'll get a 1-year $3 million deal from us this winter.
  16. Huh? A quick promotion to MLB might not be in the organization's best interests. But a promotion that doesn't start the service time "clock" would not conflict with that. I don't think many people think he's going to start next year in the majors. OK, long form. The discussion here was what the Daytona promotion says about next year. Someone mentioned AA. Too much, too fast? Well no, not if he hits. Evan Longoria, also an elite college hitter, third baseman drafted after his junior year, tasted AA his first summer out and started there his second year. Does our FO not like quick promotions? To the Majors, definitely, because of the service time clock and our current non-contending status. But the treatment of Javier Baez seems to indicate that they are not wed to the notion of one level per year or the requirement of a monster season before promotion. So in sum, to the person who mentioned AA next year, it's possible, and isn't really an heroic assumption.

  18. Using Longoria as a template, Bryant in Tennessee next year wouldn't be a stretch. It doesn't start his clock either.
  19. You might have been right about his age. Once I see D.R. on a player's page, you gotta wonder. Venezuela too, though their record keeping is supposedly better. But they may have an organized Government program to help their citizens. Balaguert is from Cuba. Thanks for the correction, although with apologies to Lo-Pan Fan, it doesn't change the gist of my post. Cuba is considerably less third-world than DR, though access to birth records may be just as difficult. As is Venezuela, but the point here is the accuracy of the information.

  22. Most of us here would probably agree that a team bullpen is the most variable element to a team. To avoid the Hendry strategy of signing the FA reliever with the best ERA in 60 innings, we are collecting bullpen arms for the time when it matters. You need 5 or 6 guys, what do we have, 15 intriguing arms in A?
