    With the back-ended long-term contracts Hendry doled out this winter, the only hope of profiting from the Cubs is to win. Am I wrong? I mean, the Cubs are committed to pay 5 guys $70 million in 2010. Can a non-conglomerate make money with this independent business unit?

    Well I am glad to be wrong. If healthy Floyd is productive. Too much talent is a "problem" that usually resolves itself. And I am confident that Pie will have a spot very soon.

    I'm a huge Bears fan, but the news that excited me the most last week was that Prior was throwing off a mound. If the Cubs ever won the World Series I don't know what I'd do.

    If Floyd has really talked to AL West teams and the Pirates, why do we assume that a proud athlete will settle for a bench role? If he is healthy and plays well in Pittsburgh, he may be traded to a contender in July (the Pirates can't possibly be in contention, right?). Why do we assume he will be here? I am beginning to think, not necessarily for the worse, that he won't sign here.

    Putting this in the Minor League section assures that this doesn't get seen, but BP published the best PECOTAs by position for those who have not played in the Majors yet. Patterson was #1 at 2B and Pie was the tops in CF. Patterson projects about 28 runs better offensively than DeRosa and Pie a few runs better than both Jones and Murton (as well as being a plus defender). We certainly have enough well deserved number-centric pessimism on this board so how about some positive news on this front for a change?

    Duffy hit 2 HRs in a game against the Cubs last year. I believe one was against a lefty. So I would say that the odds of him coming here if we deal Jones is about 100% with Hendry's saying "he can hit lefties" coming in at 97%. Hendry is a child.

    I'd start Theriot at SS when Hill,Lilly and Prior pitch. While Hill and Lilly would face RH hitters almost exclusively, they are flyball and strikeout pitchers. I'd use Izturis with Zambrano, Marquis and whoever else starts. I'd use Izturis as a late-inning replacement when it makes sense; not for the sake of overmanaging. If Theriot shows he can pick it, I'm a sucker for offense, so I'd let Theriot play more. I can't imagine Izturis hitting well so I won't bother looking at alternatives.

    His point wasn't just that this is a normal fluctuation, but that park effect had a lot to do with it. No, EQA takes ballpark effects into account. Silver's point was that an element of the decline in his raw stats was ballpark and league related.

    I think it's subscriber only, so I won't link, but Nate Silver argues that Pie is being overlooked because his raw numbers at Iowa were worse than his numbers at West Tenn. 1) Pie one year closer to Majors; still young 2) Is already a plus MLB defender 3) His EQA was .273 in '05, .261 in '06. Perfectly normal fluctuation. Sees Pie as an eventual .290/.350/.450 player. Vernon Wells skill set. I guess his projections do not include Pie's Dominican experience. Still was good to see.

    SI.com: Let's say Pie isn't ready for Opening Day. Would you really put Soriano in center, a place he's never played? Hendry: I think in a perfect world, we'd prefer him to play on the corners. But, as we discussed with him, he's not worried about where he's playing. He just wants to play one spot. In a couple of weeks, I might have a more definite answer for you. But right now, it's still kind of up in the air. You have Jacque Jones, you have [Matt] Murton, you have Soriano, you have Pie on the come, and you have Angel Pagan, who's a switch hitter, who really can play all three spots. It doesn't look bad on paper. But we still feel like we need to tweak it. Bolding is mine.

    I believe Pie's Equivalency last year was about .255/.295/.400. He finished strong and is going to turn 22 early next year. So you could reasonably add a little bit to each category. That said, Pie's 2006 is very similar to Patterson's 2001 and 2002. Patterson didn't progress at this age, but did one year later. So assuming Pie's flaws aren't as catastrophic as Patterson's, in the next year or two he could be .280/.320/.450. And if his flaws don't destroy him, maybe he exceeds Patterson's apparent .270/.310/.430 type career. You look at the numbers, what happened to Patterson the last 4 months of '05? It's amazing.

    DePodesta? The man that brought LA its second worst season since moving the franchise there in 1958? I understand why people are intrigued by him, but he didn't exactly perform all that well in LA. To say there are no other options is pretty shortsighted. DePo won the division his first year there and got rid of some lousy contracts. Then one bad year and he is gone. He wasn't fired for performance, but for personality and others' ignorance.

    I don't wish Hendry ill, not even as a joke, but he better recover so he can stand behind what he has put together.

    Well, for all of Soriano's charms, OBP isn't one of them. So Soriano-Izturis 1-2 would rival Pierre-Perez for wasting Lee and Ramirez (minus the seven lead-off solo homers Soriano will hit).

    If Hendry doesn't win this year he's gone. Then what does he care what the team looks like afterward? The amount of dead weight on this roster in 2010 will be unfathomable.

    Don't you kind of want to see Hendry's "dream team" win 78 games?

    It's pretty amazing what Hendry will pay for experience. If Lilly can have a 4 ERA in the NL over 180 innings, that is exactly 20 runs or 2 wins better than a guy with a 5 ERA. If you don't think Marshall or Mateo (or Guzman or Cotts or Veal or Gallagher) can do that, why do you have a farm system at all? To pay $9 million plus for maybe two marginal wins is awful. To commit for four years is unpardonable. Meanwhile Izturis is penciled in for 600PAs. How will this team avoid 100 losses in 2010?

    You could take some of that strain off with Howry and Eyre easily enough. Remember when Schilling closed and had to start warming up in the 6th or 7th? I would rather have Weurtz or Howry close and find a more stable and creative way to use Wood. But this is the Cubs. Stable, maybe. Creative, no.
