The 2022 Orioles won 83 games, did absolutely nothing in Free Agency because they had a young crop of players they believed in and a miser of an owner, and went on to win 100 games in 2023 with better managing and big internal improvements. We probably don't have the impact-level of a Rutschman or Henderson but we have some good prospects of our own ready to contribute to a solid roster that's already in place. You spent the first several weeks of Free Agency denouncing Jed if he signs Chapman but now if he does, it would make us the 'projected favorite' and you would have enough interest to watch more than 5 games in the season. Btw 80% of the board here and at PSD didn't like the prior off-season and didn't believe they'd outperform projections. Why don't you just let the season play out,

In this day and age late starts are fine by me. I'd rather them be available to go full-tilt or close to it in the latter half of the season. Not as traumatizing as it was before.

People should brsce themselves for Jed passing on all of them and letting his roster work itself out. He doesn't want to block the prospects and he doesn't want extremely long commitments to 4 war players.

Madrigal has had about 85% of his career PA end in a BIP. He's slow, cannot barrel up a ball, and hits way too many balls on the ground. I don't know if it's by coincedence or design, but since coming to the Cubs he has markedly raised his pull%, and has, in turn, posted a 280 BABIP with us, while it was around 330 with the Sox. Tiny samples but alas. Feels like the Cubs may be trying to wring something out of him that simply isn't there. He also saw a 20% bump in his FB%. You don't really want Madrigal to hit many FBs. They're almost always going to be a can-of-corn. Let him go up there and see-ball-hit-ball where it's pitched. His 'damage' will be done when he finds a line or a gap. He can probably be a league average hitter. Deal with his wimpy ass for one more season, or maybe half a season. He should be a bench player.

Why do you have such doubt? He's .515 over 1000 MiLB PA and that is not by virtue of hitting the ball hard. He just has a swing for loft. Give it a couple years and that skill will translate.

I'm also not sure how you can feel PCA will not hit for power. His swing is geared for lift. Can he make enough contact, will he walk enough are the questions for me. There's legit potential for 280/330/500 in his prime IMO.

Langford's numbers are unreal. He looks like a force for the next 15 years.

This is pretty interesting and that is a much higher number than I would have expected, The thing with Bellinger, is his swing will always produce a lot of lofty fly balls that will clear the fence, even with modest EV. So I think it's a safe bet to pencil him in for 25 dongs each year he is adequately healthy. I don't, however, believe that he will always keep such a high BABIP, overall, and specifically as well, with 2 strikes. I'm fine with the belief he will be a 120 hitter for a few years. Is he good enough to block an 80 grade glove in CF with similar intriguing Launch Angle expectations? Is the gap between what you perceive PCA will be and what Bellinger could provide if he sticks in CF big enough to pay 25M for? That's where I think the answer is a pretty clear no. I fully believe PCA is a 3 war player if he is a 95+ hitter, given 500-600 PA. Now can you sign Bellinger and trade PCA for a clear upgrade at 3B, or another young SP? Sure. If that's the plan, I get it.

Circling back to this comment - I think Jed did as well as we could have expected with those trades. Ironically the best player we traded brought back the worst package in hindsight. But neither of the players we traded had value comparable to Burnes. Since 2020, Burnes is 2nd in MLB in P fwar. He's only making 15.6 this year. All the smoke around our firesale was teams weren't offering much in terms of MLB ready players. I remember there was some ties to Bohm. That would have been a friggin disaster as he sucks. You have to remember, in 2020, granted under unprecedented circumstances, Bryant was god-awful, and he was slated to make $25m in his final year. Nobody was looking to give up anything substantial for him in the winter. He went out and proved he was still mostly the same hitter but then he had just 2 months to offer a team anything. Rizzo is a 1B who was on a clear decline, and Baez brought the most-enticing return of a recent 1st round CF. I would also like to point out that from 4/1/2018-06/30/2019 Yu Darvish had thrown 126 innings and ranked 193rd in fwar among P that had thrown 100+, He turned it around and pitched brilliantly for the next 1.5 years/165 IP but halfway into a 6-year deal he had given very mixed results. Not a great bet to make. At 22M salary and coming off a year where teams faced unfamiliar financials I think it's safe to say he had a tepid trade market. Again Jed chose the recent high draft pick. A great deal of patience was required and Caissie still has warts but he's also a EV and barrel monster and looks like likely to be an above-average MLB hitter. Maybe if any of Bryant, Rizzo, or Baez would have performed well in 2020 Jed would have traded them instead of Darvish at the time. Who knows. I'm sure it hurt to trade a guy that had just finished 2nd in the CY.

Adames is hitting free agency after this year. He will be traded for sure. Ortiz will slot in SS.

I'd think this would open up an Adames trade and if they go that route they might as well flip Contreras and Williams too.
