    This is a great move for the defensive upgrade. Both dudes were dropped because they aren't hitting for horsefeathers. Yan's dropoff from 85-95 ish for a considerable time to completely unplayable is pretty surprising. He hurt us really badly this year, bottom line. Awful at everything.

    Great. LHP who averages 97 and has a 128 stuff+ on his SL and 117 on his CH. On the surface, this is a pretty good move by SF.

    It's not even close to the comparison you think it is and this comment is ridiculous. Bill Hamilton actually has a pretty steep launch angle but his career-high hard-hit rate is 20% and that came on just 84 batted balls. When he played full seasons his hard-hit rate was 11%, his average exit velo was 83. Billy Hamilton was always just weak. You're making an extremely lazy comparison and think you have a 22 year old pegged.

    Yeah I suppose I agree. It's just hard having so many in the pen that carry high walk rates.

    TBD for sure. It's a sound strategy vs the Cubs who usually take 3-6 innings to view a pitchers repertoire before scratching a run across. If they get a bullpen game it could be a shutout.

    The Cubs basically haven't been on the cutting-edge of anything the last few years and that is pretty frustrating and is catching up with us, similar to how we were behind the developing velo race for a couple years before it seemed like we made inroads, only to fall into the middle of the pack. We thought we had guys in charge that would be ahead of the game on each innovation but it seems they are lacking on several fronts. IMO improving control and command is way behind in our org, as well as getting hitters to pull fly balls and keep the ball off the ground. I don't know how other teams are doing it so well, but they are. Side note: seeing Breslow go entirely against the grain and go away from fastballs and pull out another Arrieta in Houck is pretty annoying too.

    Dodgers were down 9-4 in the 9th and scored 7 in the t9 including a granny from Heyward, who is once again posting an OPS in the 8s. BAL took down Judge with a HBP to the wrist. Shrewd move.

    So Scalzo has to get a look at some point soon, right? 27 scoreless IP to start the season, doesn't get many Ks but still has a .6 WHIP so he's clearly dominating hitters nonetheless. We could use more zone-pounders in the pen, only 6 BB all year. Could be another Miller, who has been everything we needed. He should find his way onto the 40 soon.

    Are you comparing their MLB time in which PCA has put up 20% of the PA that Billy had so far? In an ERA where the league OPS is 700? t's not a fair comp really at all. PCA has never posted an ISO under 200 at a level as a Cub. Hamilton's highest ISO at any level was 138. He was nothing but a slap hitter, hitting about 60% ground balls. The only similarity is the speed.

    Hamilton reached AAA at 22 years old, got 550 PA and was 20% worse than average. Basically posted a 100 ISO across 2000 MiLB PA. Basically the same.

    Teams aren't thinking in terms of these big round numbers. They see a guy who is 20-30% above average offensively, fat and slow, and provides nothing on defense. Plus he makes 20M already. I bet he gets a lukewarm reception in FA too. Probably much like the Abreu contract.

    Ultimately its a pitch-recognition issue. The team has a quasi-selectively agressive mindset where a lot of them seem to let the ball travel deeper than average and do not get out in front of a high% of pitches. If they recognized these pitches just a tick sooner, they'd punish more of them to the pull-side. They just aren't really that good at guessing/sitting on pitches, which is where a lot of HRs in general come from. I'm curious of their ranking in leveraged counts like 2-1 and 3-1 because I believe they'd be near the bottom of the league there. They don't really control ABs as much as they get credit for the walk rate and such.

    42% of Cubs flyballs are oppo. 3rd highest in the league but less than half of a percentage point from leading the league. The league is slugging 270 on oppo flyballs. It's a recipe for turd sandwiches.

    Not necessarily. I mean, sure, they will probably move up a few slots but maybe not. Read some of the articles here that go into more depth. The Cubs don't hit line drives, they hit a ton of ground balls to the pull side, they hit a ton of flyballs to center and oppo. You are going to really struggle to get hits and runs if your offense does that.

    A handful of teams are winning with half the payroll and that's gotta eat at Tom. We're basically driving like a used Civic that cost like 50K because we had to get out of our previous underwater contract. If I were him I would fire Jawkins after the season. They've made some good moves but the lack of development on the MLB club would be giving me fits and seeing the Brewers absolutely rolling with several key injuries, a new Manager that replaced the Manager you poached, and a plethora of no-names/cheap-ass talent actually contributing, I'd be furious.
