  1. [tweet] [/tweet]AJ Hinch did an interview and showed some contrition and tried to be honest about what happened. He probably will get a manager job again down the road. Jeff Luhnow seems like a man with no conscience and I doubt he'll ever fully admit to what happened in Houston or accept blame. I don't think he gets a job in MLB again (in any capacity).
  2. I think they could afford both without trading for more IFA pool money. I think Colas will get somewhere around ~$3M and the agreement with Vera is for $1.5M. I believe they lost some pool money for signing Grandal as well. Also, Colas isn't a true two-way talent like Shohei Ohtani or Brendan McKay. When he signs with some team it'll be strictly as an OF is my guess. EDIT: Yeah, scratch that last part about the White Sox losing pool money for signing Grandal. He got a QO last offseason.
  3. [tweet] [/tweet]I listen to every episode of their podcast, but I haven't gotten around to this one yet. The trade package isn't finalized btw and I think Boston is getting a 2nd prospect from the Twins. Still a bad trade of course.
  4. [tweet] [/tweet] [tweet] [/tweet]He's definitely going to end up being a reliever, but potentially a very good one if he can remain healthy. Twins marked him as "untouchable" last offseason or close to it.

  6. Ben Lindbergh is great and I enjoy reading his stuff, but if you're stealing someone from The Ringer it's gotta be Rany Jazayerli. He's one of my favorite writers period. Problem is The Ringer allows Ben and Rany to write about other stuff like videogames, KC Chiefs and politics and pop culture stuff that isn't possible over at ESPN.
  7. [tweet] [/tweet] Yeah, I knew it was only a matter of time till Kiley McDaniel left Fangraphs again. It really sucks that he's leaving, but at least we'll still get to read his stuff over at ESPN (or ESPN+). He's basically taking Keith Law's old role and will be their lead prospect analyst/MLB draft guy. I guess Eric Longenhagen now takes over full-time at Fangraphs. Not sure how different ESPN's lists will be from Fangraphs going forward since Eric and Kiley share a similar philosophy on evaluating players, but I'm sure they differ on some stuff. I'm happy for Kiley and this should be a nice pay raise, but it is kinda sad he's leaving Fangraphs.
  8. [tweet] [/tweet]If Theo ever leaves this is the place to look for a future GM/President of Baseball Ops.

  11. [tweet] [/tweet] I know it's sad that Strop is signing with another team, but this isn't the last time Strop pitches for the Cubs. I'm calling it now -- we're going to acquire him again in a trade when we do our annual bolster-the-bullpen push in July one of these years. Maybe next year or in 2 years, but I sincerely believe he'll pitch for the Cubs again... Beyond that, when his career is over I'm pretty sure he'll rejoin the organization as a pitching instructor/coach (Theo loves the guy, as do many in the organization). I think when fully healthy he's a good reliever, but he's not the dominant Strop we're used to (or remember). I doubt he ever returns to being that guy again.
  12. [tweet] [/tweet]That is indeed pretty cool.
  13. This is pure speculation, but I agree and think he'd even pull a Giancarlo Stanton-invoke-my-NTC to force his way here or more likely LAD. I don't think he wants to go to STL. I'm pretty sure he admires the Cubs and I know he's friends with Javy lol: Of course, our lack of spending this offseason probably doesn't help the cause...
  14. So putting international signees aside, the problem with this system is that it places an even greater premium on drafting college players in the draft because they can make the big leagues faster than HS players. A top college prospect can be ready within 1-2 years after being drafted while most top HS prospects still need at least 3-4 years before they're ready. If the X number of seasons of control is the same for every player then college players would give you the most value and the highest output. Let's say "X" is 9 years of control then a college player could be ready within a year giving the team drafting him a full 8 seasons of control. This system would heavily penalize HS players and teams drafting HS players, and as a bizarre consequence make more top HS prospects choose to go to college as a result. I don't like the idea of fixing it to an X number of seasons because of these reasons.
  15. Couldnt they just lower the number of days it would take to get your first year of service time? Teams do this because they rationalize that being without that player for 2 weeks at the beginning of the season is not that bad. If they had to wait until May 15th to call that player up, I'm guessing that would be less tempting for a team looking to contend. If I were czar I'd make it more like half the season = a year of service time. Maybe less. September could be excepted if a guy makes his MLB debut in that month. I believe this will be the solution they come up with in the next CBA. The first year of service time for every player will be like half of what it is currently. If a team wanted to delay their player's FA they'd have to call him up after July 1st or around the halfway mark. I guarantee teams (especially small-market teams) will still do this however. The Cubs definitely wouldn't have waited that long in 2015 to call up KB.
  16. I don't know which thread to put this in, but it's a cool story: [tweet] [/tweet]
  17. When we lost out on Shohei Ohtani (allegedly) because we didn't have a DH, well that sealed the deal for me. I used to be against the DH too, but that fight is over... Theo is for a DH and I think most progressive GMs and execs in the NL are for it now. Allows you to play your best players even when they're a little banged up, or moving down the defensive spectrum as they get older. There was speculation the Phillies signed Harper to such a long-term contract because they knew the DH was coming. I agree on doing a compromise and having the starting pitcher be paired with the DH. Yeah, the Zambranos and Bumgarners don't get to hit anymore, but you get better hitters into the lineup this way. If people here want the Cubs to sign Schwarber to an extension then this is a necessary step. I think Schwarber will have a big year this upcoming season.
  18. If he signs with the Reds I wonder if he includes an opt-out or just signs a 1-yr deal. He wants to be on a competitive team and I don't think the Reds are quite there yet. I would take a 1-year deal and work super hard to be just average defensively in a COF spot and rake in Cincinnati. Then sign a multiyear deal next offseason with a better team hopefully (maybe even the Cubs lol). The FA market next offseason is suppose to be another subpar one so it would work out well for him. Of course, the caveat being if he has a better year and takes a 1-yr deal that team could still place a QO on him affecting his free agency next offseason.
  19. Over/under on this being the only major league deal the Cubs sign this offseason lol? I guess I should state over/under on the Cubs signing 1.5 major league deals this offseason. I think this will be the only one.
  20. Yeah, that doesn't make sense... SD doesn't have that deep a farm system that they can unload Wil Myers on Boston, get Mookie Betts and hold on to their top five prospects. That's ridiculous lol. You have to front load that deal with Gore or Patino or CJ Abrams. One of those prospects has to be part of the trade package.
