  1. Cubs play the Yankees next year? Alex Rodriguez.
  2. Not remotely irrational I'd go so far as to say probable.
  3. With a 5.88 ERA and a 4.26 FIP (3.86 career), you have to wonder if Masterson is turning himself into a Chris Bosio Reclamation Discount Special. ...and am I the only one irrationally enraged by the Cardinals' winning record with a negative run differential? This totally means they're going to win the World Series, right? ...and Jerome Williams? THE Jerome Williams? It's amazing to remember how young he was when he was with the Cubs. He had a relatively decent year on an awful team after picking him up while jettisoning LaTroy Hawkins. Then... dude just dropped off the map. Pitched 46 MLB innings over the next 5 years. And then all of a sudden, he's back in the Bigs and pitching as a replacement level guy. I don't know what happened, if he got hurt or just was lost in the shuffle or whatever. But I really want it to be some sort of Moe Berg-esque spy drama. Like maybe he had to go undercover to bust a drug cartel or something.
  4. We had a John Baker thread not too long ago that turned into a discussion on the single worst year by a Cubs position player. Somehow pitchers were spared. In the spirit of that thread... Edwin Jackson's -1.9 pitching WAR (assuming he doesn't pitch again for the Cubs this year) would be the worst single season WAR by a Cubs pitcher since... Kyle Farnsworth's -2.5 WAR performance in 2002. Kyle had a 7.33 ERA in 46.2 innings. His FIP was "only" 5.10, though.
  5. Hey, we're only 10.5 out of the wild card. That's what I'm talkin' 'bout!!! Let's do this!
  6. Based entirely on brief skimmings of third hand scouting reports, I have a feeling this guy will be more Kosuke Fukudome than Yasiel Puig.
  7. Edwin Jackson had the reputation of being a bit of an enigma before ever coming to the Cubs. The FIP-ERA discrepancy is weird. No one else on the Cubs has had that to that extent since Bosio's been there. Maybe Jackson isn't pitching to his defense? Wood could just come down to luck. His difference in FIP between this year and last (3.89 to 4.21, with a career FIP of 4.12) isn't that extreme. Is there any reason to think he can't revert to a low-4s ERA next year? If he can do that and pitch 180-ish innings, he's a perfectly decent 4th starter type pitcher, only 27 with a couple more years of team control.
  8. Sorta. But another nice start.
  9. I put the "?" there because I haven't decided if I'm on board yet. Here's a guy who had a fairly illustrious career in Japan - his nickname was "Dr. K," he was 16-5 with a 1.51 ERA and 168 Ks in 184 IP in his last year in Japan - and was a relatively notable signing for the Orioles heading into the 2012 season, 2 years at $4 million per with a team option for a third year. Then his arm went ka-boom in Spring Training, he had TJS, and spent basically all of 2012 and 2013 recovering and rehabbing. Not sure you can put too much stock in the numbers he posted in AAA at the end of 2013. Have no idea what kind of shape he was in. The Cubs invited him to Spring Training. That didn't even cause a ripple. Didn't even get his own thread in "Transactions" here. After posting an 8.38 ERA in Arizona, the Cubs released him and then offered him a minor league contract. No team in the league bit on him, and again it wasn't even noted by us here. Now he's had 18 starts at Iowa with a 2.77 ERA and 6 starts in the Bigs with a 3.15 (3.85 FIP). I'm assuming he's making veteran minimum and BR says he isn't even arb eligible until 2017. He turns 34 in February. What do we think? I'm inclined to think it's smoke and mirrors, but each decent start leads me to think less so.
  10. I'll concur. That was fun. The people who aren't watching this team are missing some pretty good baseball.
  11. Forgive my ignorance of the system, but under what scenario does Turner NOT become a Cub, now?
  12. My wife got me tickets to Friday's game for Father's Day. :yahoo:
  13. I was a Buechele fan. Slick-fielding, no hit third baseman. Tony Pendleton without the bat. Terry's older, less successful brother. D'oh!!!
  14. 2-11, now. In their seven combined starts since the trade, Jackson, Wood, and Villanueva have just been abysmal... 33.2 IP, 35 ER, no quality starts, good for a 9.36 ERA.
  15. I was a Buechele fan. Slick-fielding, no hit third baseman. Tony Pendleton without the bat.
  16. I always loved Larry Biiiiiiitner for no other reason than the extraneous "i". As a kid I always made sure to pronounce the extra "i" and then a few more for good measure. "Bi-i-i-i-i-ttner."
  17. People need to back up and look at the big picture here. Darwin Barney is old enough to have kids? Dude looks 12.
  18. I went out and bought a Braves hat that day. I never actually watched the Braves or became a Braves fan, but it was the only form of protest I could muster.
  19. Absolutely. Any trade offer begins with a power-hitting corner outfielder to even get past the preliminary mulling over point.
  20. Rick Reuschel > Rick Sutcliffe > Greg Maddux > Aramis Ramirez
  21. "Justin Grimm and some prospects," is a bit of an understatement.
  22. According to Baseball Reference, Joe Mather's epic -2.0 WAR in 2011 was the worst Cubs season since Scott Thomson's -2.2 in 1981. Apparently Mather's season was so bad, I completely blocked it from my memory. I barely remember him being a Cub.
  23. I'm not a big fan of the Frey/Zimmer regime of '88-'91. I think they did a lot to tear down what Dallas Green built up. That said, Zimmer's firing was pretty bizarre. Less than a quarter of the way into the season with the team favored to win the division only a game under .500.
