  1. I put the "?" there because I haven't decided if I'm on board yet. Here's a guy who had a fairly illustrious career in Japan - his nickname was "Dr. K," he was 16-5 with a 1.51 ERA and 168 Ks in 184 IP in his last year in Japan - and was a relatively notable signing for the Orioles heading into the 2012 season, 2 years at $4 million per with a team option for a third year. Then his arm went ka-boom in Spring Training, he had TJS, and spent basically all of 2012 and 2013 recovering and rehabbing. Not sure you can put too much stock in the numbers he posted in AAA at the end of 2013. Have no idea what kind of shape he was in. The Cubs invited him to Spring Training. That didn't even cause a ripple. Didn't even get his own thread in "Transactions" here. After posting an 8.38 ERA in Arizona, the Cubs released him and then offered him a minor league contract. No team in the league bit on him, and again it wasn't even noted by us here. Now he's had 18 starts at Iowa with a 2.77 ERA and 6 starts in the Bigs with a 3.15 (3.85 FIP). I'm assuming he's making veteran minimum and BR says he isn't even arb eligible until 2017. He turns 34 in February. What do we think? I'm inclined to think it's smoke and mirrors, but each decent start leads me to think less so.
  2. I'll concur. That was fun. The people who aren't watching this team are missing some pretty good baseball.
  3. Forgive my ignorance of the system, but under what scenario does Turner NOT become a Cub, now?
  4. My wife got me tickets to Friday's game for Father's Day. :yahoo:
  5. I was a Buechele fan. Slick-fielding, no hit third baseman. Tony Pendleton without the bat. Terry's older, less successful brother. D'oh!!!
  6. 2-11, now. In their seven combined starts since the trade, Jackson, Wood, and Villanueva have just been abysmal... 33.2 IP, 35 ER, no quality starts, good for a 9.36 ERA.
  7. I was a Buechele fan. Slick-fielding, no hit third baseman. Tony Pendleton without the bat.
  8. I always loved Larry Biiiiiiitner for no other reason than the extraneous "i". As a kid I always made sure to pronounce the extra "i" and then a few more for good measure. "Bi-i-i-i-i-ttner."
  9. People need to back up and look at the big picture here. Darwin Barney is old enough to have kids? Dude looks 12.
  10. I went out and bought a Braves hat that day. I never actually watched the Braves or became a Braves fan, but it was the only form of protest I could muster.
  11. Absolutely. Any trade offer begins with a power-hitting corner outfielder to even get past the preliminary mulling over point.
  12. Rick Reuschel > Rick Sutcliffe > Greg Maddux > Aramis Ramirez
  13. "Justin Grimm and some prospects," is a bit of an understatement.
  14. According to Baseball Reference, Joe Mather's epic -2.0 WAR in 2011 was the worst Cubs season since Scott Thomson's -2.2 in 1981. Apparently Mather's season was so bad, I completely blocked it from my memory. I barely remember him being a Cub.
  15. I'm not a big fan of the Frey/Zimmer regime of '88-'91. I think they did a lot to tear down what Dallas Green built up. That said, Zimmer's firing was pretty bizarre. Less than a quarter of the way into the season with the team favored to win the division only a game under .500.
  16. I can't agree with you on the kind of liking him part, but you're dead on with his embrace of being the bad guy. His interviews are almost like those mock pro wrestling interviews designed to make you loathe the villain.
  17. I don't understand. Szczur and Jokisch were both taken in 2010 and are now at AAA. Is he complaining that kids taken as recently as 2011 aren't at AAA yet?
  18. Cubs win. A beautiful, glorious, picture-perfect win. Frame it.
  19. One... More... Inning... Then the rains can come.
  20. I thought it was going to slice into the corner for extra bases.
  21. In the wake of the Cubs fantastic 0 for 11 with RISP yesterday... Can anyone explain why the Cubs have been so awful with RISP in 2011-2012-2013? I mean other than the fact that we've had bad hitters. They've been even worse with RISP. The statistical analyses have shown that over time there isn't supposed to be a big statistical difference between batting with RISP and overall. Basically, you're just as good/bad a hitter with RISP as without. Across the leagues the numbers bear this out. BA has stuck right around .253-.255 with RISP and overall since 2010. But the gap between the Cubs performance with RISP and overall has been so pronounced and for such an extended period that there's got to be something else going on. Right? .232 to .256 in 2011 .231 to .240 in 2012 .218 to .238 in 2013
  22. First time I've heard Coomer in the radio booth. First impression: I like him better than Moreland. Seems to already have more chemistry with Pat.
  23. It's to memorialize the year the Soviet Union invaded his homeland.
  24. I'll go 71. We play better than expected to the trade deadline. Say, .485-ish, but are out of the playoff race and trade off, making us drop further off the pace, playing .350-ish the rest of the way. We have a winning record in '15.
