  1. Because the GM is obsessed with efficiency and the owner is comfortable with the business model of a losing Cubs team still being profitable. but there are lots of guys who would still have fit into an efficiency plan with more bulk. jed can't be scared of 2 year deals.
  2. he's probably trying to, but nobody wants to come to the cubs for whatever reason They’ve gotten a premier international FA in Suzuki last year, Stroman, Taillon and Bellinger in the last ~14 months. They clearly can get guys. Yes they haven’t gotten the big anchor (Suzuki may still be one) but it’s not like they haven’t gotten decent guys to come. im.talking about this free agent class. I'm not suggesting the cubs are an unattractive destination. I'm just speculating that maybe we are getting unlucky with this particular class wanting to come here.
  3. he's probably trying to, but nobody wants to come to the cubs for whatever reason I know there are bad vibes with what happened to the last core, but there's no reason someone wouldn't come to the Cubs if they were offering the most money unless a guy is really really hung up on being guaranteed to be in contention next season. we have no idea what these FAs really are interested in. maybe they don't like the cold, maybe they don't like playing in wrigley, maybe they have friends/family elsewhere, etc. it could easily be that we're just getting unlucky with this particular free agency class not having a lot of chicago fans. i'm just struggling to find reasons for why we haven't done more so far. if we aren't serious about correa, there are so many other free agents we should have come away with/ nothing makes sense right now unless we're getting correa.

  5. brett has finally turned
  6. i think this is the first time i've seen salty brett
  7. seems like they know jed is a wuss and thought it would be easy to call his bluff and shift the blame Seems like a bunch of dumb horsefeathers all ping-ponging off of each other. we'll never get it, but i'd love to hear theo's candid thoughts on all this
  8. pulling the rug out from theo right before harper was so bad that it is in our GM's head several years later I can't really say I blame him. Although as was asked up thread, why did he even take the job if this were the case? I don't know what happened in October/November of 2018, but everything about this franchise seemed to change then. I'm sure it will someday make for a great book. Anyway, this has been a relentlessly fiscally conservative franchise ever since. But it's been penny smart, pound foolish the whole time. i don't think it changed in 2018. i think they were salivating over the next rebuild the moment the world series was won. the declining core and poor performance of the 2018 free agent signings just allowed them to get it started
  9. Seems like it? It does seem the owners are expecting money to be spent, probably aren’t to picky on who or what (outside of maybe a big name or two to market) since that’s Hoyer’s job. They might not even be a 77 win team if he doesn’t do some stuff Yep, the reports that came out last week plus the Crane interview leave it pretty obvious. This is a franchise that has been cautious and calculated about setting expectations about individual offseasons and using vague statements like 'the money will be there when needed' to describe their future payrolls. The narrative has changed completely now based on the things they've said. They had to know that they were dramatically raising fan expectations. And now instead of 90% ownership blame, 10% FO blame (on twitter at least), its reversed. seems like they know jed is a wuss and thought it would be easy to call his bluff and shift the blame
  10. pulling the rug out from theo right before harper was so bad that it is in our GM's head several years later
  11. how long until some variation of "it takes 2 sides to make a deal" comes out of jed's mouth?
  12. theo is the big winner here
  13. i'm way too salty over this dead ass team
  14. we couldn't beat that for murphy?
  15. this is getting ugly
  16. so where's the rest of that murphy trade? right now it looks like milwaukee stole contreras and oakland gave away murphy for nothing
  17. swanson will be on the cubs for more than 1 year, they still need to add talent and get closer Swanson is a 2.5-3.5 win player most likely and committing 9 figures to him in a lost season when he’s getting closer to 30 makes little sense to me. He’s not a guy and there’s ways to create his value for cheaper and try and thread a needle vs having him hamstring you when maybe we’re good in 2-3 years. well i guess i'm just not down with giving up for 2-3 more years
  18. They're not making the playoffs with Swanson either so just punt another season if that's the plan swanson will be on the cubs for more than 1 year, they still need to add talent and get closer
  19. jesus this offseason is a nightmare
  20. the pelicans are fun
