  1. I'm a big believer in stats. But how do you prove any manager's effectiveness with statistical evidence? You can't ask someone to do that, since there are no metrics available. And for those of you who think Lou is a terrible manager, who would you rather have? I'd like to read some discussion on who everyone thinks is actually a really, really good manager. You prove his effectiveness by whether or not he regularly plays the (statistically) best players on his team. He does not. Debate over. In terms of philosophy, this guy is the best. EDIT: Try this link
  2. No, this isn't correct. When an opinion is shared by a majority on the board, it's likely because said opinion is formed by analyzing stats, either sabr or otherwise. Dissenting opinions which aren't rooted in fact are not received well on this board. And why would they be? Most of these opinions are going against facts established by others on the board; in some cases, they fly right in the face of a guy who spent 20 mins searching BR for statistics and composing a long, persuasive post supporting a popular opinion. And it's likely that if a counterargument is being pushed by someone else, they only have ride-the-streak, look-how-hard-he-tries, I-watch-the-games anecdotal evidence. See sig. It's fine, and admittedly quite ambitious, for someone to challenge a popular board opinion. But it isn't and will not be received well unless it's supported by statistical evidence - and it rarely is.
  3. What a preposterous load of crap. Wow. You couldn't have proved my point better if you tried. Thanks. You probably should change your irony detector
  4. greatest effing idea ever
  5. Knowing that site, I'm pretty darn sure this link earns the NSFW tag. I effing love that effing site, mothereffers! Seriously, I think the best part about the site is the usernames, e.g. Joe Torre's prostate
  6. those stats (save bb:k) are skewed in part by a .356 BABIP, good for 7th worst in all of baseball His BABIP is that high because he's giving up a staggering amount of line drives, 24.8%. So, let's see... a LD% against of .248+.120=.368 In other words... Marquis has been a little lucky. Oh God that's scary stuff
  7. I think this trade would make old, washed up outfielders Hendry's new speedy middle infielders
  8. Josh Hancock tried that last year, but this Edmonds guy appears to have body double. I'm gonna have to call "too soon" on this one [-X You weren't around much last season were you? I sure was. I didn't think the jokes were funny or appropriate last year, either. It doesn't make a difference to me whether he was drunk or not, the death of a young kid with a bright future isn't something to be ridiculed. That said, open season on TLR's DUI, that's effing hilarious

  10. This definitely qualifies as a rant. Oh, and this is awesome!
  11. I don't see what this has to do with anything. Then you're being incredibly dense. And purposefully so, it would seem. I'm getting tired of the Lou apologists here Keep making posts like this and no one with an even remotely divergent opinion will want to post here anymore. Then everyone can agree on everything...that makes for good discussion. I loathe the decision to sit Pie, especially for what I feel is an inferior player. But if someone wants to argue in favor of it, great-maybe I'm wrong. Its within the realm of possibility that the guy comes in and hits .300 and does a solid job. More importantly, I certainly am not "tired" of people who defend the coaches--that's kinda the point of discussion. That's certainly why I post here. I think the "Lou Apologists" just might be picking fights because they feel that even the most remote defense of him is censored by the tyranny of the majority. At times, I can't say I blame them. The majority of Lou's apologists seem to be arguing just for the sake of argument. I have no problem with civil discussion, but the people who get really defensive about Lou-bashing seem to. A lot of Lou's moves really aren't defensible but that does not stop many from getting all worked up over people complaining about them, and then failing to defend their arguments (or choosing not to). If these posts of mine that you find so aggressive help persuade people to stop posting this: BUT...BUT...WE'RE IN FIRST PLACE AND STUFF! LOU IS AWESOME! Then I don't see what's wrong with them.

  13. 3 non-WGN-telecast games in a row? DOUBLE LAME
  14. explain I expected him to continue to decline, especially in the power department. I'm sure a bunch drafted him way too high and are riding him to victory, as the OP said.
  15. That's really really really really really really really really really really unfortunate, because they're one of the best teams in baseball. Please just stop. You're just arguing for the sake of arguing here, because there is no way anyone can defend this move.
  16. If Edmonds hits ahead of Geo in this lineup, I will jump off the 42nd story of the US bank building, which happens to be the tallest building in Wisconsin
  17. Add Ryan Theriot and Miguel Tejeda to that particular list
  18. Yeah, that homer that Johnson hit will keep him in the lineup for a good two weeks. Absolutely unreal. Thanks Bruce. If you're going to complain about Johnson playing over Pie at least wait until the Cubs are facing a right hander... This might be the first post of yours that I've ever agreed with
  19. That's a pretty contrived situation, especially since even scenario 2 likely results in at least a tie in the ninth. When the first guy in the eighth got on, a reliever should have been brought in. If your second best reliever gives up a double to the first batter he faces in the eighth, and it's indicative of the kind of pitcher he is, there is no post-season for your team. If Marmol can warm up more quickly than Wood, which I think is the case, that's the only reason you need to not have Marmol as the ninth inning "closer." It's a simple and unavoidable fact that, on average, a pre-9th inning "leverage" guy will pitch more crucial outs and innings than a pure closer (every 1-3 run lead, ninth-inning only). The perfect situation would be Marmol pitching both pre-9th inning key situations and nailing down 9th-inning, one-run leads. But...But...THIS ISN'T CONVENTIONAL!
  20. Wuertz has 6 walks in 17 innings. Marshall has 7 walks in 8.2 innings. He watches the games, dude.
  21. Sidney Ponson would make me look like a sniveling little schoolgirl.
