  1. I'm not sure who that coach is since David Bell was ejected before this, but that little "go get em" butt slap to Garrett as he clearly turns towards the Pirates dugout is pretty great too.
  2. Hmmm...an inevitable 7 inning, 8 hit, no run, 3 K performance from Mikolas, or watching CNN feed Biden softballs all night?
  3. Man, if you are semi throwing in the towel, this train doesn't have anybody left. Eh, it’s august. Nothing else on anyways.
  4. Not a lot you can do after those first two strikes. I’m sure Addison Russell is like 2-4 in his career against Carlos Martinez though.
  5. Yeah pretty much, besides maybe Heyward at the top spot when he's running hot. I kinda like letting Zobrist figure it out in the 9 spot when we gets back since it's going to be such an unknown. It's amazing what having Garcia and Happ at the end of your bench does for your flexibility.
  6. Setting aside his insignificant major league numbers, Garcia is going to strike out a lot and not walk a lot, and putting him at leadoff doesn't make a lot of sense. If you really believe in his bat and want to protect him, put him second or third to give guys a chance to get on in front of him. He should be treated as someone who will pound fastballs and mistakes until the league gets a book on him.
  7. I can squint and see a strategy of letting Happ readjust to major league pitching by using his one clear skill (patience, zone control) in a spot where he isn't going to get many strikes. But that's almost definitely a stretch. It's the smallest of complaints, but I'd love for someone to explain putting Vic, Schwarber, and Happ in that order.
  8. Don't mind Heyward at the top of the order, but your three best hitters are KB, Rizz, and Baez, and one of them should be batting second.
  9. I was a little confused about the decent K rate and comments about missing bats, but his swinging strike rate is abysmal. He's literally not missing the bats. This is more hypothetical than anything else, but given the absurdly low swinging strike rate compared to the slightly above average K rate, it would seem to me he's getting a lot of takes on pitches in the zone? I wonder how that compares in terms of predictive value vs swinging strikes.
  10. I assume this will be the thread that makes it. The tweet in the other one said he isn't missing many bats, which I don't know if I'd agree with given his 9.35 K/9 rate (slightly above league average for relievers). 2 home runs in 17 innings, and a low GB rate doesn't seem great. I would say that he's one of those guys where someone in the org identified a fix, but we haven't had one of those in a while.
  11. Sounds like Tim Collins going back down, which...whatever.
  12. Descalso is an absolute waste of a roster spot at this point. I'd rather see him go. At least Almora is an OK defender and can occasionally run into one at the plate. Almora is above of Descalso simply because of how Maddon has been using him. If he was just being treated as the defensive replacement that he currently is, he'd definitely be lower. But at this point, need to take him away from Joe.
  13. In order of awesomeness: 1. Almora to AAA 2. Descalso to wherever it is washed up players go 3. Bote "getting his head on straight" 4. Vic "getting his head on straight" 5. KB to the IL
  14. Brad Brach hitting for Rowan Wick is just Maddon being wacky for the sake of being wacky.
  15. This guy has to almost be out of gas, right? Edit: Nevermind, didn't see the pitching change.
  16. This is exhausting. Lose the biggest game of the year...tear it down. Send down Russell and go up early with Chatwood on the mound...we're back. Lose KB to a potential injury...rebuilding time.
  17. Finally, we got to the bottom of why anyone would still want him around.
  18. Yeah, however will we have any chance against a pitcher with a 4.70 ERA (which is apparently lucky, given his FIP).
  19. Garcia came in hot but the league is already figuring him out as he's 2-for-16 with 6 K's his last 5 and while he has power he has a .233 OBP his last 10 games. Also Russell sucks off the bench but has been great starting. Addison Russell has been worth 0.3 WAR over the past calendar year, a calculation that unfortunately does not take into account him physically and mentally abusing the mother of his children. Robel Garcia has been worth 0.3 WAR in 14 games, hits massive dongers, and to the best of our knowledge is not a terrible person.
  20. So your point is that Russell is better than Javy, Bote and Garcia? He's 100% better than 2 of them and a better SS than Javy In July Garcia has a 1.020 OPS to Russell's .723. That's a bigger sample size and a much bigger margin. Also Jon Lester has a 1.400 OPS in July. Arbitrary sample sizes are fun.
