Yea they'll just pick up the remaining money not the old bonus amortization. It's expensive as far as waiver claims go, but it's nothing in the grand scheme of things. Bears at least 3 years away until they'll realistically have any cap discomfort (and even then, the cap is fake). In a few years when they're extending Fields it won't have mattered they wasted a few million along the way.

They're gonna be able to do dick all with that money anyways. Even if I allocate the rookie pool for a number 1 pick, they'll still have like $65M in new cash they have to spend by 2023. But that number could grow if they trade/cut any high priced players under unguaranteed deals for 2023 (i.e. Whitehair, Quinn). Then if they finish better that worst in league it quickly adds up to another 5,10,15 M. Now Poles could obviously spend big in FA to that tune, exclusive of Smith, but if you're looking at roster construct and his behavior in 2022, it's maybe a coin flip that he'd be spending that money on premium positions verse other lower value positions.. like, I don't know ILB. They'll probably be not much over 90% of the minimum cap spend anyways. Maybe 95%. There's diminishing returns of holding back so much spending. Any real money they give Roquan would be paid out before they are even close to having serious cap decisions to make (with an extended Fields, hopefully).

It's absolutely just negotiating. I understand the consternation given the offseason to this point, but every contract hold out/hold in/whatever looks exactly like this. Eh, I think it's safe to assume that Smith being self represented does make a difference here and adds to the variability. That fact makes it a way different starting point.

I understand the sentiment, but the Bears are so far removed from concerns over roster cap efficiency and showed little signs of life of actually utilizing the boatload of available cash they have, and cash they have to spend before 2024. Guarantee they'll throw worse contracts to meet the cash floor, rather than just making Ro the top paid ILB. And the real guarantees would be done before any Fields second contact money hits too. Even with an extended Ro they'll have boatloads of cash to spend next year. Basically you'll have to believe that Poles can have a 2022 Jaguars like offseason and use it all more efficiently than on an extended Ro.

Yea, if Soldier Field had a bunch of supporting amenities and revenue opportunities, plus another 10k seats I kind of doubt they'd be looking seriously at a large scale replacement. Plenty of other stadiums built before SF will well outlast its life because they weren't cluster fucks from the start. In fact if the Bears had just done the indoor McDome, theyd probably have gotten by with just renovations along the way to modernize/add suites and that's it.

I haven't kept up with the NBA cap like I used to many years ago, but aren't they likely need to use additional space in season that would push them over that then?

Obviously every experience is different to some degree. I looked it up after making that post yesterday and some websites of unknown authority made some bigger claims about ALS and pain but the well known sites like Mayo Clinic and ALS org downplay it's pain effects. So :shrug: It's an awful disease but based on any first or second hand experience I've had with it, those who suffer often times have a pretty peaceful end, and not, "I just wish it would end" mindset. It isn't the writhing in pain experience. It's very difficult to watch and care for though. And obviously it's difficult to experience for the patients. But when I think about the "I pray for it to be over for them" type attitude, it's a way more complex situation than other types of death I've watched for ill people. Whether it's severely sick patients who are basically comotose from the pain management meds and sever physical pain, or people who have lost their mind and aren't even there mentally.. It's just a lot different.

Ok, I've been trying to figure out this comment but I'm really not sure what you're saying here. LOL. read an article yesterday about mcmichael having a fentanyl patch on him at all times. yeah, the dude is in constant pain. Huh, my understanding of ALS is that sort of pain and pain managemt isn't super common. But I guess it's possible. That sucks if it's the case. Even thinking of family members who I have watched die in hospice from organ failure related to age, the pain management plan wiped out any quality of life. ALS patients (again from everything I've personally known) generally maintain all their mental faculties (if they lose it it may be related to some other concurrent issue), and if they aren't in pain or their pain management needs require very low doses of stuff that don't turn them into a glazed-over shell of themselves, than the idea of merciful pleas re: their life may be misguided.
