    Pace with the middle finger to size and hard on for athleticism this draft.

    So I'm kind of walking myself into being on board with the trade last night. I think we definitely needed to add a high level WR prospect at some point over the next year, and so we paid the 4th to do it now instead of next year. Why do I like getting the pick a year early? The Bears should be thinking about the next 3-4 years as their first serious window. Mitch should be well underpaid for his production, and the overall cap outlook is comfortable enough that they can maintain some agressiveness in FA. To that point this year will likely still be a bit of a transition year (hopefully competing for playoff spot, but not serious SB contender), but it gets that high level WR prospect in here now so that he doesn't lose a year of development time that aligns perfectly with the Mitch Trubisky rookie scale window. So I think this year and even next will be our window to pay that "time value" premium. Now some people probably think we need to be more serious contenders first. But I dont see it that way, you want to be out ahead of your potential curve in order to maximize it (because rookies take development time). Then around 2021/22 when Mitch is maybe the highest paid player in football you go the other direction and start trading down or into the future for more depth and take swings later on. So that's how I've backed into my justification and I'm sticking to it.

    Draftteks day 3 mock (comments are my own) Rd 4- Josh Sweat, EDGE, FSU Nice length and athleticism, and three year producer st FSU. Would like this pick. Rd 5- Kevin Toliver II, CB, LSU Big bodied CB (6'2"), but li backed production. Always ma ki es sense to add DB depth though. Rd 6- Christian LaCouture, DE, LSU Seems kind of like a ho-hum DL prospect. Older prospects. No elite traits. Good production over 4 years. Fills a need though. Rd 7- KC McDermott, OT, Miami Meh. But most 7th rounders are meh. Sounds like a future Bradley Sowell if all hits. All in all something like that would be okay with me. Obviously you dont really want to draft on need on day 3, but those would all hit some needs on some level.

    Most the "new" models I've seen would make that 4th more valuable relative to the second...basically making this trade impossible to "win". But I dont also totally agree with some of those new models, either. When the wage gap between early and late picks is drastically cut, I don't see how the value would skew toward the later picks. Most the new charts have looked at historical value, and the drop off between mid 2nd and fourth isn't that great, at least speaking on that macro, historical view.

    So without taking into account any "time value" premium on the trade the Bears would have to finish top 6 in the league for this to be an even trade on the traditional trade chart. Fwiw.

    i have no idea what you're saying at the time that trade was made, they knew exactly who was available and who they'd be able to take. a player of the caliber/fit that they apparently perceive miller to be may or may not be available with that pick next year. they gave up a 4th and swapped 2nds (yes, a later 2nd than they are likely to have next year - but that is negated by the fact that they know their player is there when they make the move) to make sure they got that player and they got him a year sooner than that guy they'd take next year. and i still have no clue what point you were making by saying we had 2 4th rounders this year they gave up a (more likely) primo 2nd and 4th for a (more likely) lesser 2nd. Got it. my point stands. David still wants to know the relevance of the other 4th.

But when you trade up you aren't trading for a pick, but a player. GMs tend to love players (but will take picks when they don't love a player)

    yea. they hated the possibility of Meredith's recovery and felt White gave them a better chance. If they kept Meredith, it would have been Meredith vs White in camp. #8 probably would have been a reach for Ridley or trade down for Ridley/Sutton or later draft WR. what dont you get 1. Why you think White has anything to do with anything 2. Why you came in all hot like you called your shot when WR as a top 3 need for this team was the popular opinion of every Bears fan in existence.

    I dont think (maybe false hope) this has anything to do with White. He's like an old pool table in the basement you just haven't gotten rid of because it's more a pain to move it up the stairs than the extra space is worth. That should be the attitude anyways. If they draft Nelson at 8, its exactly what I stated.

    Were you the one who thought it had to be at 8 though lol? no I'm the one who wanted it 1st day. but i forgot that the NFL doesn't draft 2nd round on 1st day anymore, so I would have been fine in rd 2. dick nuh uh, you said if they drafted Nelson at 8 that meant they were comfortable with White at WR. And dont call me a dick.

    The one rumor I heard was moving up for Hughes. Ridley/Miller makes more sense.

    Whats really weird is that there are 6 picks, but only 4 teams in front of the Bears today. Intuatively that feels like it could inflate the trade up market as there are less potential sellers early on.

    Depending who is there for the WR or G though, a trade down for depth might be more appealing.

    They expect him to be insanely good if they picked him at #8. I'm also guessing that Fangio understands the value of inside linebackers in his defense. The Fangio aspect is definitely a big positive, if anybody can make the most of Smith it's Vic. With WR/OL/DB/EDGE all a need right here, I get the trade down motivation but I think I'd rather they get one of the guys at the top of this round. I felt my list was stalling at around 4, so its perhaps a 50/50 proposition if there is a guy who is definitely worth grabbing vs possibly reading down for value.

    Some possibilities... Will Hernandez Josh Jackson Harold Landry Isaiah Oliver Courtland Sutton All would make sense for need and/or value. Bears are up 7- if those 5 were all gone, I'd be okay with a trade down for sure.

    I don't actually have any idea how good these players will be but defense is dumb and pointless. the offensive options are supposed to he pretty similar between this spot and 39. LB isn't quite a premium position is my bigger issue, though if he really is the next Keuchley then it can be.
