Interesting reading this article with everything that has been written about the Bears process GM/HC process. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/33160068 Kwesi doesn't sound like he's getting full reign in Minnesota.

Like that he spent 5 years in Ravens org and then Philly. Two winning orgs, one in Baltimore I'm particularly fond of. Another former lineman (Virginia).

I kind of like Eberflus, but we have two first timers again and I did kind of want at least one of the roles to be experienced. Will be eager to see how both coach and exec staff get built out. Rod Marinelli back as DC?

I really don't think there's much reason to be doubtful of DBB having a source. Quality of source, and certainly bias of source, flame away. But between the Pace call, naming the exact day and candidates of certain candidates, and being the only one to say that George would announce a restructuring at the PC, means he has a real source. Some have speculated its close to Ted, which sounds like a reasonable assumption. But if it's not Ted himself then there's gonna be an opportunity to have bad, biased, or incomplete info from time to time. Still for rumor-mill blogging and not traditional, well vetted, journalism standards, it seems pretty good.

I suspect this is an underrated component of the edge. First ball you always have a better shot at a possession edge. This is why the "halves" idea in OT works well as a balancing feature. But we can itterate on versions of that because you risk getting into an endless game still. After a certain point, sudden death is probably practical, but there should be some strategic trade off rather than just being determined by a coin flip.

That's the first OT period then. It's a full timed period. Do either the coin toss or flip possession from 2nd half to determine possession. After that period is played out in full, if it's still tied, you flip possession again and now go true Sudden death OT. No clock. First team has an advantage as they can set the pace on first possession and basically try to end it on their terms in a single scoring possession, but if they give the other team too much time to tie or run out of time on their own, that other team is also gonna get the sudden death advantage on 2OT. Each team at least gets something and there is a strategic element that counters the coin flip weight. I've done it. Put me on the phone with the commissioner. That's it!! Another day another problem solved. One addendum as I think through it. If the first team to possess kicks a FG, OT should either 1. Immediately go to a sudden death with possession to opponent OR 2. Add a set time to the clock, say 1:00 extra. Basically avoid running the clock down to a FG try. I think I prefer 1, but both have validity. Also OT automatically ends on a defensive score.

The other Lafleur hasn't proven a lot but he did get like 900 yards in 2 games out of whoever that nobody was who came in when Zach Wilson was injured. That alone is more than Nagy ever did. Literally can't remember his name he's such a nothingburger. Edit - it was actually Mike White the first game and Josh Johnson the second game and was 800 passing yards against two decent opponents, Cincy and Indy. Jets were 22nd ranked offense dvoa, with crap QB play. Bears Offense dvoa ranked was 26th.

With GM in hand its another great day to mock a rival.

You basically turn OT into a 2 minute drill shootout where managing the clock is still a strategic factor and avoid the possibility gassed Ds allow two elite Offenses to trade scores into perpetuity. Maybe as little as like 3:30 continuations. You can carry over up to 2 timeouts, and are given one new timeout at each even number OT period, up to 2 max? Clock stops at 1:00 instead of 2:00? Or no auto clock stoppage. (no TV commercial break!) Keeps managing the clock a factor. To the credit of KC, they scored a FG with just 13 seconds at end of reg and there were multiple sub 1 minute drives by both teams! Teams have to balance managing clock and not giving their opponent time to respond. But if KC scores in 2:30, BUF still has an opportunity to respond with a minute left. That's exciting football! It doesn't guarantee a possession response and doesn't have a random coin flip determine any possession edge in sudden death. It keeps the periods long enough to possibly leave a response but short enough a skilled team can milk it. Also short enough to consider player health/fatigue and not have super long extra periods. At some point the timing of the clock plays something of a luck factor, but it's not luck that is untethered from skill and strategic inputs. I don't know what the right numbers are as far as the length of time. I know KC took longer than that, but if you keep the period short enough they know they need to hurry up a little at least. Presents really interesting strategic decisions on each side. It's basically a constant 2 minute drill OT. Perfect. Need a minor league system to test wacky ideas like that though.

The way I read it was that the search team had those three coaches, but Poles insisted on being able to hire who he wants, presumably including others not in the final 3 three. If correct, then Daboll, Flores, whoever may be in play. It would be interesting to see if Poles wants Flores, for example. Does George just say OK or does he want to push back and say I didn't like him? So in my scenario, maybe the Bears said, yes, hire who you want (even someone we didn't like - this is the questionable part), but please start with our three finalists before expanding the grouping. I think it's a little more like: we already had these guys scheduled because they were tops for us and you so you're first few interviews are scheduled. You can take the rest from here though. If he wants to bring back Flores or someone totally new I think he'll be able to.

My understanding is these guys were mutual to Poles initial list as well. But he may have others. But Quinn sounds like it really may happen

So it's your position that a 6.6% difference in who wins an NFL overtime game with a sample size of 65 games or whatever it is is entirely due to the coin toss? That's your take? How about the 10-1 advantage in the coin toss winner in the playoffs? Small sample, but it would be interesting to see regular season results of eventual playoff teams as an approximation of a larger "playoff" sample.

I'm bringing this back up since you referenced it a second time. It may be technically true that the coin toss winner team wins exactly half the time if you take out the playoff numbers and include the ties as "non-wins", but it's pretty misleading. Because if you do exactly the same for the non-coin toss winner teams, the non-coin toss winner teams only win 43.4% of the time even when taking out the playoff numbers (with the other 6.7% being those ties). That's still a pretty healthy advantage for the coin toss winner. I don't consider 50-43.4 a statistically significant difference. There are a million potential reasons for that. If the end goal is an OT that produces an exact 50/50 split, good luck. Your best chance for that is probably literally deciding it with a coin toss. I mean I guess the really intersting approach would be to also look at the point spread or dvoa ranking and seeing if there was any correlation where the stronger team was still tending to win independent of coin flip odds.

My interpretation is George has been 100% honest and transparent about this stuff. I really don't think a hot candidate would agree to a GM job if it came with the caveat that he had to hire an elder statesmen as HC. I think it's entirely possible that Poles likes Caldwell, and don't believe George is forcing him, or any other coach, on him. Yeah, especially when it sounds like he had the Vikings job on the table as well. Would have just gone where he wasn't forced on a HC, unless he really hates Kirk Cousins.....which who would blame him? Eh, even if he really hated Cousins, I don't think anyone believes that GM is gonna be beholden to him. Probably could be moved in a trade and Minny would accept a rebuild I think. So yea I think Chicago had to be competitive with their offer and not just rely on Fields v Cousins.

Indeed, this is the one George McCaskey has to get correct, if so, everything else falls in place and the Bears will turn it around. I underestimated George. I guess picking Ryan up at the airport helped seal the deal? I think it was the shoes.
