The jury is still out for me, personally, partly because I wanted an offensive head coach and partly because I have to grade him on a curve with a roster that was intentionally loaded with 2nd and 3rd stringers as starters and practice squad players as backups. That said, they did seem well-coached for as much as a team with this little talent could. They stayed in games they had no business being in (thanks to Justin, too), and they didn't *seem* to catch a lot of dumb penalties. The effort appeared to be there. There's also this. I'm not sure how legit this is, but there are some good teams/coaches around him on this list. Sidenote - The second half vs first half thing is interesting and almost adds some credence to the narrative that they didn't go out of their way to "risk" winning games later in the year. Or it's just happenstance small sample stuff (as is everything with football stats) and a bad team. But a pretty stark difference, either way. At worst, it wasn't a coaching clown show like Nagy, Fox, or Trestman. We'll see what it actually looks like when there's $110+M (or whatever the number is) and a #1 pick draft worth of talent added (and, yes, some of that cap space will go toward extensions).

    Fields was the consensus number 2 pick in the draft almost all season. I remember getting mad that the Bears already had too many wins and would have no shot at Lawrence or Fields. Nothing Fields did in his last season should have caused a drop in draft stock IMO. He didn't start dropping until after the season when people started talking about him throwing to his first read a high percentage of the time. I'm sure there's more to it but he was very highly regarded as a prospect until draft time. Think it was concerns about his epilepsy and BS reports (like Orlovsky's "last guy in, first guy out" garbage) about his work ethic that caused his stock to fall more than anything. Whatever it was, I'm selfishly very happy it happened.

    Day 1 is only the 1st round. They aren't getting 4-5 1st round picks Yeah I made this same mistake a few days back before I realized day 1 is only round 1. Then I realized that that has been the case since 2010. god damn we are old.

    Not many. How many "we just need to give him more weapons and another year" bears QBs ended up living up to the hype? Once again, I'm not saying we have to draft a QB and trade fields because of this. I'm saying that "trading fields and seeing him become a superstar somewhere else would be a Bears thing to do" is a bad argument. There's a lot of instances of the Bears passing on good QBs and very few (flutie?) of them letting a good one go. It's perfectly possible for keeping fields to be the right choice and for a lot of the arguments being put forth for it to be bad arguments. When is the last time the Bears actually surrounded a QB with weapons? When is the last time the Bears had a QB with a talent level similar to Fields? Around 10 years ago. Unfortunately the defense immediately collapsed.

    How many of these "megastar" high draft pick QB's actually live up to the hype? he said "turned out to be," so in his scenario this guy did more than live up to the hype (exceeded it bc the megastar hype isn't really there). which is what makes this an even dumber thought exercise. there's nothing all that special about these prospects (as compared to any other draft class's top QBs) and if one turns into a stud, it's basically happenstance given the way these things work. fields is a better prospect, has already shown competence at the NFL level with a hand tied behind his back via supporting cast (and he also happens to make less money than a #1 pick QB would make - something that seems to be being ignored/overlooked when the rookie contract conversation comes up - not that this offsets the issue entirely). capitalizing on the desperation of teams that just want to make something happen at QB is why that path is a no-brainer. if it happens to not work out, oh well.

    The only real problem I have with this is the fact that the rest of the roster is in shambles and even if you did feel moderately better about one of the QBs than you do Fields, you're in the same position all over again. You're not going to get the value by trading Fields that you will from trading the #1 pick and the roster desperately needs as many talented bodies in whatever position you can find them as they can get. Now this I do not understand. If Fields is as good as we want him to be, if he's clearly a better choice than the No. 1 pick, then he should have as much trade value as the No. 1 pick. The second you put him on the market and let teams know you're open to trading him after 2 years it devalues him. It's a stain all on its own. Not that it's a route I would want them to take even if it weren't the case.

    the nice thing about having horsefeathers players all over the place is being able to go BPA with zero remorse and also it's very easy to upgrade from a practice squad roster given all of the resources we are going into this with.

    i have a feeling that if the bears had attempted to pass more often in obvious passing situations, their PFF grades would look a lot different. like kyle said, PFF can often basically be a RNG anyway, but with play-calling as unorthodox as the Bears had, it's probably even less meaningful.

    Aside from the occasional hot take artist, I’m not seeing this at all. The general sentiment is that they have their quarterback and need to find a way to surround him with better weapons and a line all while restocking a pathetic defense. Agreed. I feel like it's a ratings thing in an industry (sports media) that makes money on hot takes. Everyone was saying all season when Fields was putting up highlight plays every week how he was great and the Bears needed to get him some help. Now the same people are saying the opposite for shock value. I feel like if he had a 50 yard run or a beautiful deep ball completion against Detroit Week 17. Or even something as simple as if Houston had lost and the Bears had the #2 pick, nobody would be talking about replacing him with another QB. Even still, I feel like the ones saying that are being disingenuous. yeah... at least, other than lesean mccoy lol

    I just don't want them to fall in love with anybody, including Anderson or Carter. Multiple spins of the (premium) wheel should be the paramount goal here. As many 1st/2nd round picks as they can possibly amass and BPA every time. There's no reason not to given the fact that they literally only have one position really locked in.
