    99% of analysts clutter a broadcast with platitudes and flat out wrong opinions. Santo can add "feel" to the game by putting an emotional response to what you don't see, and for that he's better than the vast majority of analysts.

    They haven't brought him up because the only pitcher not performing well has a contract they don't want to eat. Smith's comments are right, if they were conspiring to keep his service time down, they wouldn't have let him start the year in the big leagues. I must say though, I don't appreciate this publicity when I'm hoping I'm the only one who remembers Liriano in my fantasy league when he comes back.

    I don't really think DeRosa is a problem in the OF. He had a bit of a rough week there, but on the whole he's fine. I doubt there's a significant difference between him and Blake defensively.

    The same question becomes "Is there a reason we need both Blake and Johnson?" I guess Blake is better against RHP than Fontenot is against LHP, but on the other hand there are a lot more RH relievers than LH relivers.

    Blake would be absolutely perfect if he or Fontenot or even DeRosa could play SS. As it stands the bench construction doesn't lend itself to easily adding a bench bat unless we go to 11 pitchers.

    Well, it's one stat, and one that I'm not a huge fan of. Simply, Ichiro is not an elite offensive player, or even an elite offensive outfielder. And while he's a very good defender, that makes him far from a HOF lock. Imagine if he wasn't !chiro, he wouldn't have nearly the swell of support he does.

    Anyone with me for the following? Harrison and Vitters to Peoria, Vitters plays 3B, Harrison plays 2B with Opitz like in Boise. Rosa moves to the DH spot vacated by Bautista to Daytona, where he plays C/DH. Flaherty hasn't played in 2 straight games again, there's got to be something behind his lack of PT recently.

    Are you legitimately making this argument? First things first, what SSR said. Second, BP's fielding metrics are garbage. Third, before Ichiro's arrival, Manny Ramirez had 6 consecutive full seasons, SIX, that were as good or significantly better than Ichiro's best season.

    What about Boston having kids like Bucholz (can't spell his name worth a crap) Lester, and perhaps even Lester in the rotation? Or how the Yankees with Kennedy and Hughes? I'm not comparing the quality of young pitchers the Cubs have to what the Red Sox/Yankees have, but those teams were/are prepare to go with young, unproven pitchers in the rotation. Now, I admit it's been semi-decent with the Red Sox with Lester working out, but Masterson and Bucholz being hit and miss. And so far it'shasn't work for the Yankees, but that doesn't mean their young pitchers still won't developed. So just because a team is a "high-payroll championship contender" doesn't mean they won't take a shot at having cheaper options in the rotation. IMO, Kennedy and Hughes will work out for the Yankees, and Bucholz will work out for the Red Sox in their rotations. I don't buy your argument, because IMO it's dated. You can't simply ignore the fact that Buchholz, Lester, "even Lester"(Hansen? Masterson?), Hughes, and Kennedy are worlds better than Veal and Samardzija. It's the whole point.

    Wouldn't it be more likely that MiLB.com has the names wrong? They aren't exactly surgically accurate when it comes to Mesa.

    I think Ozzie Smith's HOF-worthiness isn't a open and shut case. Even when you use offensive metrics that account for Ichiro's game, he's still underwhelming. He's broken a .300 EqA once, and counting this year he's been below .280 for half his career. He's tied for 34th in GPA among outfielders this year, after being 7th last year, 20th in 2006, 21st in 2005, and 8th in 2004. That's barely All-Star worthy, never mind the Hall of Fame.

    So that's your criteria for the Hall of Fame? Mickey Tettleton walked a lot and Dave Kingman had a lot of power. Let's put them in! He's not saying that walking or hitting for power are the only criteria, but that there are standards for those that need to be met to be HOF-worthy.

    I don't like that the winner gets HFA, but the game last night was so entertaining that it was worth it. A couple ideas that have been tossed around. -Allow positional player re-entry, or at least a set number. It's great that guys like McLouth and Ludwick and Cristian Guzman made the All-Star team and all, but a device keeping them from getting 4 plate appearances would be nice. -Expand the break from 3 days to 5 and play the game Wednesday. That way every pitcher is on at least two days rest during the game, and the additional 2 days after pitching 1-2 IP ensures they can start their teams 1st game out of the break if needed. -Force pitchers to be in or out. No more of this "I'd rather not pitch because I pitched Sunday, but I guess if worse came to worse..." stuff. You're either available to pitch 1-2 innings at any point, or someone takes your spot for the game.
