  1. Jackson and Castro can get in line as far as I'm concerned. Castro needs more peripherals, and Cashner's stuff wins out over Jackson's age/innings so far.
  2. Next year's money isn't guaranteed unless he hits 635 PAs this year - he hasn't come close to that once in his career. 2010 is a club option. Sanchez made the All-Star team this year, so his option vests at 600 PA's. He's currently on pace for more than 660.
  3. Freddy Sanchez would be a big, big mistake. Sanchez is 31 about to turn 32. He's not going to get better, and with this year being a career year, it will likely get worse. Sanchez is an averageish defender. He adds no extra value with the glove. Sanchez is a career .300 hitter with mediocre walk and power rates, which means his value is very much tied to his BABIP. That's why awesome Freddy in 2009 can follow up awful Freddy in 2008. And most importantly, Sanchez will make 8 million dollars next season. I'm not too excited to pay a .300/.330/.420/.750 hitter with average 2B defense that much money when there's no chance for projection because he's 32.
  4. Samardzija and Heilman both pitched in extra innings, on the road, but not Gregg. Dumb.
  5. Baseless accusation: Chan Ho Park is doctoring the baseball. His 2 seamer is moving like a foot down and a foot in to RH hitters.
  6. Heilman has good stuff today. Nice job by Hill surprising him with the slider.
  7. This should be Gregg. If he gets the out here, you have to use Heilman in the 12th. That means you're using him before Gregg, which is a mistake.
  8. I've never seen a Major League player look like a newborn pony more times than Alfonso Soriano.
  9. A full count is not license to run with whoever you want, why are you running there?
  10. It's shifting blame. Is it the Cubs drafting poorly? Or not developing well drafted talent? Or not having the picks? They're not mutually exclusive, but they're separate problems.
  11. The Cubs drafted pretty poorly for a while, but they also had a 3 year span where they were missed a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th round pick. Considering that the best chance at having a useful commodity comes from the first few rounds, the Cubs going through a stretch where they missed that many early picks is worth noting. PS I have no idea if this was mentioned in the article or not.
  12. Who from the farm system is going to replace Reed Johnson? Fuld. Not so much in the "Kosuke platoon partner" role, but the "5th outfielder/primary CF backup" role
  13. The Nationals have the 5th best offense in the NL, and we held them under 3 runs per game.
  14. Off white with blue piping is my dream Cubs uniform.
  15. Probably, but that vesting option is ugly. Nobody wants to take that on. he has missed some time with back spasms this season, is he on pace to match his plate appearance requirement still? Pretty easily. ESPN has him projected for about 660 PA's.
  16. I haven't just posted about KU. This is true, you've also posted about the Royals.
  17. Hosmer looked like the best player on the field when I saw him play 2 weeks ago. Granted if he always got 3 hits a game this wouldn't be an issue, but he's doing ok from a BB/K perspective, and if he looks like he's handling it well from a scouting standpoint, I don't think it's a huge issue.
  18. I'm not so sure the recent numbers aren't at least equally significant. Fontenot was more or less a hidden asset back then, playing sparingly. He just hasn't translated that success into more regular playing time. There was very little expectation he could do that before he had the success he did in the majors. If anything I think it's safe to say over 800 is asking too much. So let's say that you weight your expectations 2/3 from this year and 1/3 from his past, you're still getting an expectation that's better than Lugo, with better defense, with a better recent track record, and with someone who's at an age where improvement is more likely than decline.
  19. Which is more important going forward, Fontenot having 230 PA's of .691 OPS against RHP, or having twice that many PA's going into this year against RHP with an OPS well over .800?
  20. I like Doc Saturday's headline for that. "Irish on board for Yankee Stadium, creation of new vortex of insufferability"
  21. Sounds like Darwin Barney. Too bad he probably needs at least a few months at AAA.
