  1. I think there's some hope that away from Baltimore that you could do something to help him with off handed hitters. My biggest problem is that even if Matusz is fixed, he's a free agent after this season. Sure he wouldn't be cost prohibitive to bring back, but even if you're confident in him being fixed it's a risk to entrust him with anything more than Wood/Richard innings, and the upside isn't all that great if you're signing him to a Cahill deal or something.
  2. Peanut Tillman did the stretch. He also had a funny conversation with Pat where he said he really admired his voice.
  3. get serious with that 393 feet nonsense, we all saw it
  4. In fairness, Ventura picking relievers is a bit like playing russian roulette with bullets in every chamber
  5. Did it sound like he broke his bat to anyone else? A promising outcome if he didn't even get the barrel on the ball.
  6. Montero was, is, and remains better than Baez at hitting RHP. So if you're saying it's justified to have Montero hitting 5th on this team, then this team is nowhere near as good as you'd like to pretend. If La Stella or Coghlan isn't going to be in the lineup, then the Cubs have 4 guys who are great at hitting RHP, a handful that are okay, and whatever you want to call 2016 Heyward. This is less an indictment of team quality and more a reiteration that Montero serves a perfectly useful purpose even if he's not having a good year.
  7. Surely Baez must bat 8th, batting him 5th, nah. Montero was, is, and remains better than Baez at hitting RHP.
  8. The more you know: Hendricks and Sale have nearly identical ERAs since the beginning of 2015, 3.33 to 3.31.
  9. Russell. He has 5.1 fWAR in 900 MLB PA's, he's 22 and a half years old, and he still has plenty of room to grow with the bat.
  10. Schwarber killed the ball last year, including playoffs he had a 143 wRC+, and that is probably not a fair expectation of Schwarber's bat going forward. A 143 wRC+ would be Rizzo's worst mark since 2013. He also is under team control for the same duration as Schwarber.
  11. Today's Ask BA is on the Yankees presumed choice of Torres over Eloy: http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/ask-ba-choose-gleyber-torres-eloy-jimenez/#SybqrOMjHocEY23B.97
  12. This is a bit of a silver lining to Chapman's comments, I guess. Ole Hank White might not be much of an interpreter. This tweet summarizes his timeline if you want to click through and read in more detail: [tweet] [/tweet]
  13. That post is in reply to someone calling you homophobic when you called Daniel Murphy a fairy: viewtopic.php?f=26&t=439&p=32370#p32370
  14. I'm repeating myself from earlier, but characterizing Chapman as someone who has committed domestic violence, and is therefore a bad person, does not require more than widely agreed on facts. He put his hands around her neck in an argument, shot a gun in the garage in frustration, and hurt his hand punching a car window in anger. Domestic violence does not require a certain level of bruising to be damaging and despicable behavior.
  15. Wonder why Strop was unavailable, his usage doesn't seem to dictate a dedicated day off.
  16. those are actually signs of little to nothing, as they are pretty close to .500, but having especially bad records in those situations would actually be a good "sign" typically. Also they added a literal 10 foot flame throwing goblin to the back of the pen today
  17. this is unquestionably maddon's biggest blind spot regarding obvious stuff good managers can do to give teams an advantage. i'd love to hear his reasoning. lost us the game, too. maybe this is why theo decided he had to build a super bullpen. give joe so many good pitchers he uses someone good in that spot by accident. He didn't even do the 'well I tried to steal an inning but now there's a runner in scoring position so we'll bring in a better reliever to shut things down' that normally happens. Not great.
  18. had two relievers who strike out over 35% of hitters in the pen, used neither
  19. I can see the logic for running for Rizzo but boy I really hate using relievers that aren't your very best in this spot. Not having Rondon or Strop in the game here is bad bad bad. If you give up a run you lose, it's more important than a save situation!
  20. Now do the odds of Rizzo getting another at bat that matters.
  21. Well, if they are giving it to him, and someone walks, it takes away the force at third? Yeah, he beat Frazier to the base.
  22. Is Carl Edwards Jr. actually the unholy spawn of Oil Can Boyd and Gumby? My column:
